This exceptionally patient gentleman is clearly waiting for someone to offer him a tumbler full of that whiskey.

Are those hames, i.e. antique horse collars, on the wall?

They don’t look quite right for that, compared to some I’ve seen… but I don’t know what else.

A likely thing for a gentleman to collect.

It’s only been operational on my computer beginning today, but I’m already detesting “Bungle Lens.”

Buck, of course, knows that even when a motive has been established for a murder suspect, the suspect NEVER lies about where they were and what they were doing.

All sarcasm aside, I highly recommend this week’s “Last Week Tonight” regarding police interrogation.

Oooh…. Ooooh…

I..um… well, I was just sitting in my chair… and the next thing I knew… somebody had sneaked in and stolen at least two hours. Maybe three!

I was going to call the Time Police… but, ironically… I don’t have time… cos even more crime is afoot! Serious crime.

Which is to say… we’re back on the Midnight Express…
Rejoining the mystery in progress!

We’re watching the greatest canine mind of sleuthery, gumshoe his way through an apparent murder… right here on the train…

The train that used to run right through “Cleo and Company” on Sherpa!

At the time, we used to often be aboard... and little did we know, but SOMEBODY already had plans to…. (gasp!)… e l I m i n a t e Sherpa!

Liquidate it!
It’s horrible, being turned into liquid…

So glad we weren’t on board when it finally happened!

….

And think about all the toons!

Poor toons… they encounter such discrimination…
Wantonly tossed aside whenever it suits SOME people.

Toon lives matter, too!

Think about our dear friends, the Cliffords, the ones with that sweet, adorable dog!
They barely escaped to WordPress.

Where are Buck and Candace now??

Ooh, I was so sorry that happened to Sherpaland!

But I digress…cos it hadn’t happened yet when these Sherpa stars appeared in this mystery.

And you have to remember that however evil this man seems to have been…

However many toon folk obviously hated him….

He was murdered!

Murder was and still is illegal!

Sam Basset…. super shamus… flatfoot extraordinaire…
MUST find the murderer…. so he (or she!) can be brought to cartoon justice!

And do it before she (or he!) can strike again… if that’s even part of his (or her) evil agenda.

I mean, maybe not… but you never know about evil agendas.

Agendii?

Agendices?

Ok…. I have just GOT to stop digressing, and get some sleeep….

Clickety clack… clickety clack… clicketyzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…..

Well, as Sam Basset’s night has serendipitously been turned upside down on “Pineapple Upside Down Cake” day….
(the pamphlet is a souvenir from the 1964 New York World’s Fair)

From the pamphlet entitled:
“HAWAII THE ALOHA STATE NEW YORK WORLD’S FAIR 1964-1965 SOUVENIR RECIPES”
Published by:
PINEAPPLE GROWERS ASSOCIATION
215 MARKET STREET
SAN FRANCISCO 5
CALIFORNIA

”PINEAPPLE UPSIDE DOWN CAKE AMERICANA”

1/4 cup butter or margarine (use butter)
2/3 cup light brown sugar (packed)
1 (1-pound 4 1/2-ounce) can pineapple slices
7 maraschino cherries
6 walnut halves
1 1/4 cups sifted flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup shortening
1 teaspoon grated orange peel
1 teaspoon vanilla
2/3 cup sugar
1 large egg
1/2 cup milk
1/3 cup flaked coconut

Melt butter in 9 or 10-inch round pan or skillet. Sprinkle on brown sugar. Drain pineapple; arrange 7 slices, with cherry in center of each, and walnuts in bottom of pan. Cut remaining slices in half. Place rounded side down against sides of pan. Keep warm. Resift flour with baking powder and salt. Cream shortening, orange peel and vanilla. Slowly add sugar, beating until smooth and fluffy. Beat in egg. Add flour alternately with milk, mixing smooth. Stir in coconut. Carefully spread over pineapple. Bake in moderate oven (350 degrees F.) 55 or 60 minutes or until done. Let cake stand in pan 5 to 10 minutes before turning out, upside down, onto platter. Serve warm topped with whipped cream. Makes 6 to 8 servings.

Notes from me:
20 ounce cans of sliced pineapple are still available.
I haven’t made my mother’s version in a while; something for the fall when the weather gets crisp instead of the dampish type spring day it is right now. (-3° C by my thermometer)

Mute swan chicks shelter under mom’s tail feathers
Massapequa Preserve
Long Island, New York

Mute Swans

These proverbial ‘ugly ducklings’ are anything but. Soon, they will indeed grow up to become graceful swans. The young mute swans, called cygnets, are sheltered under mom’s tail feathers in the Massapequa Preserve on Long Island, New York, a tranquil oasis in the suburban sprawl of Nassau County.

Mute swans, despite their name, make a variety of sounds such as grunts, snorts, and whistles but are less vocal than other species of swans. The popular phrase ‘swan song’ comes from the mistaken belief that swans are silent until the end of their lives when they sing a beautiful song.

Cygnets have dark bills and grey down, but as they grow older, they’ll acquire snow-white feathers and an orange bill, as well as those long, looping necks swans are famous for. Male swans, or cobs, can weigh over 30 pounds, making them one of the heaviest flying birds in the world.

True to their associations with love and romance, mute swans are devoted lovers. They tend to pair for life and remain monogamous, sharing duties of maintaining a nest and caring for their young. Swan pairs aggressively defend each other and even mourn dead mates. It’s no wonder we’ve come to view them as symbols of enduring love.
