When I am in Philadelphia, people tell me I look like Ben Franklin, even asking for pictures. In the rest of the world I am often compared to David Crosby. No offense to either of these fine gentlemen, but I prefer to be myself.
May 30, 1911, marked the largest racing purse to ever be offered to that date, $27,550, and drew 46 entries from the United States and Europe, of which 40 qualified by sustaining 75 miles per hour for a quarter-mile distance. Weight was limited to 2300 lbs and a maximum engine displacement of 600 cubic-inches (9.83-liters).
Ray Harroun won the First Indianapolis 500 race driving this 6-cylinder Marmon Wasp. Ray started in the 28th position and ran the car at an average speed of 74.602 miles per hour. Ray’s Success was attributed to the car being the first single passenger race car and also the first vehicle of any type fitted with a rearview mirror.
Harroun drove the Marmon Wasp again 50 years later at the age of 79 for the 50th anniversary of the Indianapolis circuit in 1961.
Harroun drove the Marmon, which was built in Indianapolis, without the assistance of a riding mechanic, and he was the only driver to do so in the race. When some of his rivals objected, claiming he would be a hazard on the course because he might not be aware of cars overtaking him, he built and installed what many authorities believed to be the first rear-view mirror ever used on an automobile.”
The rear-view mirror is supported by the frame you can see in front of the cab.
The Wasp also had to be started with a hand crank.
As a side note (edited in at 0:24 hrs. E.D.T.):
There were only 46 states of the United States at the time. The latest star added to the U.S. flag was for Oklahoma which became a state on Saturday, November 16, 1907. I only added this in because the flags in the poster are only representative.

What a great poster from Stel Bel. What excitement! Trading rubber if not paint, and so close to the stands that they could give a young lady a high-five on their way past.
In the old days, safety for the participants AND the spectators was secondary to the spectacle. It took many years and many fatalities before safety was elevated to be a prime consideration.
I’m guessing it’s the pup singing along to the opening notes of “Bohemian Rhapsody” that you wanted to draw our attention to (the clip has to be unmuted), but I got a kick out of the other stuff (amimals and space pictures) too. 🙂 🌞
The Myrtle Beach Storm picture is a work of digital art by artist Brent Shavnore.
His other work is worth viewing too.
Never understood the fascination with Judy’s glasses.
I never understood the lyrics at all.
I mean, I can hear them, but they make no sense to me.
Catchy tune, though.
My take is that the glasses are her “disguise”, but he doesn’t try removing them until he’s removed all her clothes (including her “living bra”).
“Men don’t make passes at girls who wear glasses”
So Dorothy Parker has said
She said it quite rightly, it’s very unsightly
(But no one wears glasses to bed)
Men do make passes at girls who wear glasses. It just depends on the frame.

Wow… you look kinda like that Dennis guy….
the one from Seattle.
Nope. Something isn’t right here.

I’m thinking a poor choice of lens distorting the features.
Yeah, maybe a little too close, trying to capture her blue eyes, but that made it look kinda like a fish-eye lens.
Her nose usually isn’t bulbous.
Much better!
Now i can tell who it is!
My what big eyes you have.

Bassett racing is always the best, The excitement of those flying ears is unmatched anywhere else.
.
That basset is moving like a bat(basset?) out of hell.
FWIW: Snow Sez is back.

I know that some of you already know. 😉
Looks so pretty, for an automobile race, doesn’t it?
Dressed up basset ladies and gentlemen, waving hankies and hats — were they really only inches from the cars?
It was, supposedly, already called the Indianapolis 500 by 1911…
yet that title appears on neither poster…. the basset nor the human.
…
In any case, it’s beautiful.
It all looks so genteel… the basset ladies in their fancy hats and pretty dresses…
even if the cars were zooming by, close enough to touch.
…
Makes you forget that it was even less safe in those days…
and even the onlookers were involved in some crashes.
Oops.

there’s been a lot of this going around lately
It’s qualifying week at Indianapolis Basset Speedway!
Good morning, race phans another Stel-lar poster in time for the big race.
Y’all scavenge up some shrimp and snails. (((((HuGz!)))))
I’m appalled at the apathy towards the plight of those poor little ol’ dogies
Well, you know, it IS their misfortune, and none of your own.
I never quite understood why we were supposed to hunt scavengers.
Or Schnitzel, for that matter…
what a great poster, Stel! love the Basset ears flapping.
and this year’s Pole Winner clocked in at 234 MILES/HOUR!!! that’s faster than a aircraft takeoff speed of 150 mph.
thanks for the videos. especially the last singing by Jim Nabors! what a treat.
Pretty tame compared to Strega qualifying at over 480mph.
were you at the stick?
Only in my dreams.
That sort of racing seems kinda two-dimentional
I saw my first whale spout of the season.
I also saw my first flights of pelicans going north.
A double Woo Hoo! 😀
