If you mean that’s how they hired Roy Rogers… No way!
I don’t know when that would even be…
They were both big stars for mostly the same decades, so there was never a time when Autry’s career ended and Rogers stepped in.
And AFAIK neither ever sang backup for the other.

It’s possible that rumor started because Gene Autry did leave the movies for a while to fight in WWII, while Roy Rogers had a deferment due to his large family.
The studio wanted Autry to take one too, but he refused, and enlisted.
They punished him by heavily promoting Rogers in his absence, as King of the Cowboys, and it stuck.
But after the war, both were big stars into the 1960’s
I never got into Roy Rogers as an actor, and the only songs I actually like which he sings are “Cool Water” and “Tumbling Tumbleweeds,” both written by Roy Nolan; a founding member of “Sons of the Pioneers.”
Dale Evans wrote “Happy Trails to You.”
Sadly, her home town is now in the news today. Uvalde, Texas.

The amazing thing is that the apparent table lamp behind him, with what looks like a fiber optic light spray on top, is actually his helmet.

Ohhh! I loved Roy Dog-Ears when I was a little pup…. er…. I mean…. girl! Of course.
I even loved his howling during the cow-pup action…
which is saying a lot…
At that age, I usually considered it an unwelcome intrusion in the plot,
when actors or cartoon characters suddenly burst into howls.
(John Prine described it in a song intro as being like a clock radio going off in the middle of a movie….)

But Roy Dog-Ears was different…. he was meant to be a singing cow-pup…
handsome, kind, more of a benevolent personality than an action hero….
we even had his children’s recordings at home.

And Trigger. My beloved Trigger.
Some kids thought heroes’ horses were supposed to be white…
but I thought the tall, palamino Trigger was the epitome of horsey beauty.

And we all loved Gabby Howls…. that voice, that hat.
No wonder Roy’s own mate, Dale Arfans, had to settle for FOURTH billing. She’s lucky their dog Bullet isn’t on the poster.
Never mind… I still wanted to BE her.
While forever in Roy’s shadow…. she was nonetheless right there with the pup-pokes… her fur immaculately groomed, riding her own precious Buttermilk.

And there’s the mellow sound of the Pups of the Pioneers.
I read in one place that they were “The Pioneers,” when they started…
till a record company exec said they were too young to be Pioneers, and added “Pups of”.
But I read elsewhere that Roy started the group with two friends, and they were always “Pups.”
In any case, they’re not the same “Pioneers” that sang on that Carson Robinson record… which I also love.

Well, one would hope!
Dale and Roy (born Frances and Leonard) were an iconic couple, together many years…. An example to all.
But when they met, he’d been married twice, and she’d had THREE previous husbands. I guess they finally met the right ones.

They had about 30 pet dogs on the ranch (I know, I know… But famous, rich, anthropomorphic bassets can have regular dogs!)
Bullet was Roy’s favorite, smart and well trained, and became his dog in the movies… Supposedly one of the best non-anthropomorphic dog actors.
Unlike most movie dogs, he really was their pet, and went home with them after every shoot, and lived the life of a pampered house dog.
Oh… And I still say “happy trails” all the time, thanks to Roy and Dale.
My late brother and I even used to sing a bit of this, jokingly, a lot of times when we’d say goodbye…
(Nobody in my family can sing anything NOT jokingly. We pretend it’s ironic but the truth is it’s horrible.)

rotisserie chicken
Anybody remember actually seeing a Kenny Rogers Rotisserie Chicken place? I do.

I remember one near me. It then became Godfather’s Pizza and is now a Mexican restaurant.
Costco has the best rotisserie chickens. I get about 10 meals out of one and even save the bones for stock when I make chicken and dumplings.
i even buy their breast meat only because i can no longer pick the meat off the bones. great bargain!
