In the top photo. My dad was at about the 100′ mark on that diagram on D-Day. He said his job as a boiler tech was to make sure they weren’t making any smoke and once he heard a couple of pings of metal off the armor plate, he figured smoke wasn’t a problem and ducked down behind the plate.
Took 30 years to get that one out of him. I have a few more but not about DDay. When the days come up I’ll let them out. The screen still gets blurry when I’m relating them.
No….YOU find one with the English translation. There are way too many to choose from! I couldn’t decide.

Is that the Ten Cats Warehouse? Only nine cats, but one might be providing security. Of course the EWC would be Lily, the toughest cat in the Warehouse.
There’s a peanut butter version of this type cake too.

“Woman’s Day Collector’s Cook Book (revised and enlarged)

“ “SUN-KISSED APPLE CAKE” ”
1/2 cup solid vegetable shortening
1 cup packed light-brown sugar light
1 cup canned applesauce
2-1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon each salt and baking soda
1 teaspoon double-acting baking powder
1/2 teaspoon each ground cloves and cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1 cup chopped walnuts
Lemon Frosting (below), or
confectioners’ sugar
Cream shortening and brown
sugar until light. Add applesauce.
Mix dry ingredients and gradually
beat into first mixture. Add nuts and
pour into 9″ × 5″ × 3″ loaf pan lined
on bottom with waxed paper. Bake in
slow oven ( 325° F. ) 1 hour, or until
done. Let stand on cake rack about
5 minutes, then turn out and peel off
paper. Turn right side up. Cool; frost,
or sprinkle with confectioners’ sugar.
“ “LEMON FROSTING” ”
Mix 2 cups sifted confectioners’ sugar,
1 teaspoon grated lemon rind, a little
yellow food coloring and enough
lemon juice to moisten. Frosts tops
of two 8″ layers or 1 large loaf.
Notes from me:
Sift the flour before measuring.
Any shade, or amount, of brown sugar is always measured packed (I’ve never run into a recipe where it is not). The use of lard will not make this inedible, but will make it “heavy” (when needed, my vegetable shortening of choice is Crisco).
A change (or the omission) of nuts will definitely change the taste, but that’s up to you.
Use of single action baking powder just means the cake won’t rise as high. Double acting baking powder activates immediately on mixing, single action needs the oven heat to activate.
Remember baking soda and baking powder are two different things.
Bake on second rack (top rack is first). Check for doneness at the 50 minute mark.
A knife stuck in the centre will come out clean. It will be obvious if it is not.
This time of year, from late spring to summer, male adult indigo buntings take it up a notch and turn a brilliant deep blue. They fly up to a perch—like our cheerful fellow atop a branch—and sing from morning to night to defend their territory from other males and to catch the attention of females. Indigo buntings are members of the ‘blue’ clade (subgroup) of the cardinal family.
During breeding season you’ll find the small, seed-loving songbirds in brushy habitats in pastures, along roadways, and at the edges of forests throughout eastern and central North America, from southern Canada down to Florida. But you’ll have to keep a sharp eye out for the plain brown females, who are usually tending to their young deep in the thicket.
My little baby robins left the nest yesterday (which the parents built on my porch). Empty nest syndrome…. 🙁
(Sorry they’re all blending in with each other, but my leg and back problems prevented me from getting a closer look. I think there were four or possibly five.)
I saw one (Indigo Bunting). I don’t know if it was really the prettiest bird I ever saw, or if the rarity (only saw it once) made it seem so. But it is beautiful.

Well… yeah… so didn’t I say I was NOT mentioning it?
🙂
Well, I never mentioned it!

Toe beans!!
Wonder what hapless bean/being he stepped on?
One of the best choral compositions.

Gosh… I know Lily is tough… probably started out life as an alley cat. She can be selfish, ornery, cranky… even a little bit mean.
But… but… I’ve always thought there might be a nice kitty hiding under that fluffy white fur, waiting to be found.
sniffle….
….
Do you believe she’s actually evil… and could perpetrate real crimes, as nefarious as those of the EWC?
And while Chesney might go along, and even talk Jack into it… would the likes of Bluebell, and Woof, and especially Oliver, do her dastardly deeds?
NOT sweet Oliver! Never!
The Beautiful Bird Revealing The Unknown To A Pair Of Lovers
by Joan Miró
find the ”nose” hidden…
The NOSE??? I‘d like to find the beautiful bird, the pair of lovers and…..oh, yes….THE UNKNOWN !!!
I suspect that this painting needs to be viewed in its entirety, and at a little distance, to see all that is presumably depicted.
You may very well be right!!
AHA! We’ve found the headquarters of the Evil White Cat!
How exciting, to watch this adventure un-spool…
We have followed the thread, to a dingy office, on the seamy side of town, where the EWC meets with his (somewhat) trusted henchcats …
to dispense a sudden word of warning:
They may be facing a danger they didn’t expect!
He thought he had this caper all sewn up, but now it seams that two clever, caped canines may put a knot in his plans!
…
How will it wind up?
The EWC lives to needle BatBasset and Sparrow…
but he knows that they’re very sharp, and will probably be keeping an eye on him, once they suspect him.
He’s on pins and needles!
Holy sewing-basket, BatBasset!
You must mend this situation!
…
Please! Return all the arches to their proper places… and restore Got-Ham City, and the world, to their former carefree calm…
so we fans can go safely back to Cleveland…
enjoy the golden arches, and just let Cleo and the Cliffords, as usual, keep us in stitches.
Cleo and the Cliffords,,,,,, is that a new Rock group?
Very funny!! I enjoyed it.

…and, it’s a great double feature: Charlton Heston AND Cleo Clifford!! What a treat! Let’s all go to the snack bar…♪♫
The photograph is definitely by the late J. R. Eyerman, “Life” magazine.
And I’m reasonably certain Bugs Bunny always missed his left turn here.
so, since this movie was so llooooonngg, is this sunrise?
Probably so long that the top pic is the first movie, when it’s starting, right at sunset…
The bottom pic is the second movie, just ending, at dawn.

Our 2 pairs of Cardinals are back. Saw them this morning.

EWC needs one meowlion dollars.
Good Monday morning, Cleophans!
D-Day. My dad was there in 1944. (See under NH’s D-Day photo above)
I only celebrate half of National Yo-Yo Day. I could only get mine to Yo.
Y’all have a great Monday. (((((HuGz!)))))
i take it from the board meeting that the EWC is not a fan of the Dynamic Duo!
the EWC belongs in jail, i say!
