It’s been a few years since I saw it… but certain parts I remember well.
I’m so glad it’s coming back to the BassetPlexIV, so I can lose myself in it again.
I don’t go to theaters yet… but luckily, we can all sit together virtually there… and if any film deserved fresh kibblecorn, this one does.

I’ve also seen the copydog human version Stel posted tonight…
it just isn’t the same as the basset one. How could it be?
it’s missing … I dunno… I guess… there’s no doggy magic.
Even the artwork has lost the flourishes and charm of Stel’s original…
and the actors…. humphff…. no basset wizardry there, is there!

This film isn’t terribly old… it’s a new version, not just a remake, of the one I knew and loved as a child,
though I was still years from being even a twinkle in anybody’s eye when thatone was filmed.
It starred Leslie Bow-woward and Merle Doberon…. and until she saw Bone with the Wind, it was my sister’s very favorite movie, and she even swooned for its effete hero.

But they did a great job on this Ian McCollie version… I think I like it even better than the old one, which is unusual for me.
He seems more heroic…
Janey Seemore is beautiful… and the award-winning costumes are gorgeous, besides.

BTW…. the legend of the Pimperbasset is so ingrained in people’s imaginations, they forget it’s actually fictional.
It’s been used in other works as well…
Notably, one film, seemingly much liked on this site … “The Court Dogster”… in which Danny Kaynine recites the lines about the chalice from the palace, and the kibble with the poison in the vessel with the pestle….
has a plot that somewhat parodies the legend… involving a hidden royal baby with a purple pimpernel birthmark…
the pimpernel being an actual flower, as in that fairy illustration.
You all just gave me a big boost on a day that I needed it most!!! I’m off to have a last dinner with my only sister before she moves out to Chicago, permanently, at the end of the week. It’s a good move for her, but I am really going to miss her living close by.

we felt the same way when our 4 kids chose to move away! they are so happy ‘out there’. in time you’ll accept their choice. you won’t have to like it, but you’ll accept it.

I think you’re right; Prine (+ Alison Krauss) is a bit more melancholic and wistful. Marlena is more … … devious. But that was a different era.
