I saw him live many times… Country Joe and The Fish performed a lot of free concerts in Berkeley, plus I saw him in San Francisco, and probably a free political gig or two in Oakland.
BTW… In case the smoke and the tiny flames look s little over the top, and you only excuse it because “it’s just a comic.” ….
I’m here to tell you (luckily) that it happens, or did, anyway, with computers of that vintage.
….
In I think 1993, I bought my first “real” computer… I’d had a late 80s Commodore for a few years before that (which booted from an external floppy drive).
The “new” PC. was actually used, about as old as my Commodore, and several years out of date… but “IBM compatible”, a 386, with Windows 3.1, and a huge 40 Megabyte internal hard drive… Oooh…
It cost $450 … even used computers were expensive… and came guaranteed for one year from the used computer store.
12 months and 2 weeks later, black smoke suddenly burst from the top… and poof! ..it was irreparably gone
…
Never mind, said a friend, who has just bought an early Pentium laptop… and lent me his 386 desktop… with an even bigger hard drive… I think 125 Mb… that had cost him around $2000 in the late 80s.
A few months later, that one fried too.
Only, like the Batcomputer, it emitted small flames, as well as more smoke.
Luckily, I was sitting right there, and threw a small blanket over it, that extinguished the fire.
I never thought to be worried when it happened, except for those flames, the second time, maybe catching the curtains on fire.
….
I also had one of those curly “compact florescent” light bulbs spontaneously catch fire while I was sitting next to it…
It startled me… Emitted a little flame and some black smoke, and set fire to the small plastic lampshade, but both fizzled out almost immediately, before I even got it covered.
The bulb was black and melted on one side when it cooled.
The Battle of the Little Big Horn took place nine days before July 4th, 1876, 100 years after July 4th 1776. (A particular big deal since Custer had been thinking of running for President later that year…)
Nighthawks and I rather thought Happy was referring to catfish, not parfait. But, then again, anything is possible…even parfait dredged in cornmeal and pan-fried in a cast-iron skillet!

aren’t they the cutest?!
Can’t not smile at this one!
eeeeeek! a snake!!!
I’m not afraid of snakes, just because they are snakes.
I’m very, very happy that i will never see that one.
well, i tried,BatBasset fans, i only found 7 this late. i’ll see all y’all in the morning.
goodnightsleeptightiloveyou.
still didn’t see #8 and #9. one was sneaky and one was easy. bummer.
Same here! One easy one sneaky!
Same here!
Country Joe and the Fish were a wonderful part of Woodstock. Many of us can still sing this song verbatim.
I sang it marching around in Oakland, with a few dozen others, as the troop trains departed.
I saw him perform it live as a solo act at the Vancouver “Save the Whales” concert ca.1975…

The Batcomputer looks pretty out of date.
OMG, “out of date” barely scratches the surface!
Of course, you probably don’t need to scratch the surface… it’s already been getting pretty scratched up since… I dunno… 1992?
I’m surprised a young pup like Sparrow has even heard of a floppy disk, much less used a computer that knows what they are.
…
I think it’s a BatMac, and I’m not as familiar with them as BatPCs…
But it not only appears to take floppy disks, they might run in an external drive.
If there’s no internal hard drive, and even the OS boots from floppy, we’re talking a good 5 years before that…
But it does look more 90s-ish… I think.
…
In any case, heck YES… it’s time to update the Batcomputer… IF you can find any parts anywhere.
But I suggest you check the Best BatBuy website, instead, and order something a little newer.. … by, like, 30 years or so.
Sometime since Sparrow was born.
….
Meanwhile, I have a solution for you guys… You Cleofan guys, that is, and Puzzle People…
It won’t do much good for BatBasset and Sparrow… but while the Batcomputer smolders, and after you’ve looked hard for all the differences….
You may check your solution…

Oops.
All this led to the theory that computers (and their components) ran on “magic smoke.” If you let the smoke escape they no longer worked…
I’m steeling that. 😀
A good friend of ours died from smoke like that less than a year ago. And his computer wasn’t very old.
He died from smoke from his computer?
Wow… I’d never heard of that.
I never thought to be worried when it happened, except for those flames, the second time, maybe catching the curtains on fire.

That’s why I will never buy one again.
LED only now.
Yes, he did. Those fumes are highly toxic, too.
I haven’t looked at the answer yet, but I did find eight so far. I will try again tomorrow before I make my comparisons.
I found #9 this morning.
found nine, amazing, maybe the pain pills and muscle relaxers helped, neck giving me grief!
hope that’s just temporary
Seven :o(
I got eight. Apparently there is a difference in Batbasset’s left foot that I still can’t see.
It is very slight.
that was the ‘sneaky’ one i missed.
strawberry parfait
LOVE those strawberries!
piictus catfish
June 25, 1876
we’ve gone to ‘the battlefield’ many times. once we were privileged to be there on June 25, 2010!
we saw the ‘parade’ of various tribes and spoke to many of the ‘Indians’. it was AWESOME!!!
Custer’s last words:
“Jesus Christ, I never saw so many f***ing Indians!”
Nine days before the centenary!
?
not sure what you mean, old top.
what will be the 100th anniversary in 9 days?
The Battle of the Little Big Horn took place nine days before July 4th, 1876, 100 years after July 4th 1776. (A particular big deal since Custer had been thinking of running for President later that year…)
Ok…. 9 days till the 4th of July, but that’s not a Canadian holiday…
And I don’t know what happened July 4th 1922… in either country.
Hmmmmm…
July 4th 1776?
With a cornmeal batter crust and pan fried in a cast iron skillet.
Well, I prefer my parfait cold… But to each his own, I guess. 😃
Nighthawks and I rather thought Happy was referring to catfish, not parfait. But, then again, anything is possible…even parfait dredged in cornmeal and pan-fried in a cast-iron skillet!
The only way to tell what I meant would be to pull my tongue out of the way… but I’m afraid it’s caught in my cheek.
