I dunno what that black thing is in Julie Andrews’ hand, but it might be the dagger she’s hoping to use on Audrey Hepburn for stealing her part in “My Fair Lady”.
Just joking… I’m pretty sure it’s actually the Oscar she won for starring in “Mary Poppins”, and this was taken at the ceremony that year.
I think Julie may have been over it… because she won an Oscar and Audrey didn’t.
She was a stage actress and it may even have been her first movie role… but winning the award propelled her into stardom.
…
She had expected to play Eliza Doolittle, after becoming well known for starring in the Broadway production, and being on the soundtrack albums….
but was passed over for Audrey, for the film role, because the latter was a much better known, more ‘bankable” star.
Then she was hired to play Mary Poppins, that same year… and won the Best Actress Oscar for it.
…
Poor Audrey… she had nothing to do with the casting decision.
I mean, what actress is going to say “Oh no, I can’t play Eliza. That part belongs to Julie Andrews!”…
Nonetheless, she received lots of hateful mail for taking the role.
Then she found out they had Marnie Nixon dub her singing, even though they’d filmed her doing it and she thought they were using her voice….
And after all that, she didn’t win an Oscar… and Julie did.
….
I should be asleep so I’m not going to try searching for this to verify…
but the story goes that in her acceptance speech, Julie jokingly thanked the producer(s) of “My Fair Lady” for making it possible.
(By not hiring her, freeing her up to play Mary Poppins.) 🙂
I found the movie, “Bullet Train” on line.
The only warning I’ll give you is there is “language”, but it’s in context.
The movie itself?
“Kill Bill” shot as a comedy…..”The Pink Panther” shot as “Kill Bill”…..”Get Smart” with teeth….the plot makes a tiny, and I do mean tiny, bit more sense than that of a “Mad Max” movie….and even the Coyote would be hard pressed to survive some of the physics.
Blood and gore galore, ……………but ……………..
FUNNY ! !
You can tell the cast had a good time shooting this. Academy award it isn’t, but well worth the time. 🙂 🙂

Kind of a low blow from Perro, is it not?
Aah, I crack me up! 🤣 😂
And he is deft indeed, especially for a basset hound!
And polite, in that courtly style of a true Spanish gentleman (which has nothing to do with ruffians like Slurez and the other Spanish would-be conquerors.)
Note how he ever-so-politely bids the Comandante a pleasant night.
…
“THOK!”
Now, there’s a sound not usually associated with graceful swordplay…
seldom caused by the delicate parrying of long blades.
But quite effective.
…
So you see, mis queridos… the winner will not be the one inflexibly married to his choice of weaponry….
NO… he will be the one who adapts to changing opportunities.
The funny thing is, Dionne Warwick had a hit with “Do You Know the Way to San Jose?” right before it turned into Silicon Valley…
It soon became a tech Mecca, and the population doubled.
By now I bet you can find much lower rents in LA.
…
An old friend of mine… I met him in the late 1970’s… had gotten married and become an iron worker in San Jose, right after high school…. around 1965.
He and his then wife bought a new, smallish, cookie cutter tract house in a working class neighborhood… something like $20,000… about 900-1000 sq feet, complete with bare yard, with only a sapling tree tied to a stake.
He showed me a picture.
…
They split up and sold it for double a few years later, thinking they made a killing.
In the late 1990’s those little houses were selling for a million dollars because of the housing crunch for tech workers. Who knows how much, now.
I haven’t talked to him for a few years because he and his current (I hope) wife ( he’s had four while I’ve known him) moved away … but last time we talked about it he was still kicking himself.
Our first house which we bought in 1965 in Garden Grove for under 20,000, is now selling for $860,000. A tiny house with a big back yard. We couldn’t have stayed there, though ~ too small. By the way, my husband was an Ironworker and thanks to the Ironworker’s union, is still supplementing our income.
My parents bought this house in August 1958 for $15K. Got tax assessment the other day and over $200K. 3BR 1 bath 1,200 or so square feet. In Norfolk, VA so less than it would be in a lot of places, but still…..
Edited to correct the square feet. I really shouldn’t post late when I’m half asleep.
Umm… I’m thinking you might mean 1,200 … About the usual sq footage of a fair size but not huge 3 bedroom home.
Built in the 50s, possibly $550,000 to 850,000 around here, but much more in the next county south, which is close to San Francisco, and generally wealthier.
If you really mean 12,000… Well…. that’s a whole ‘nother category. A mansion.
…
But still… You can’t usually touch a small, say, 850 sq ft, two bedroom one bath, older home where I live for under $400,000… MAYBE if it’s totally ramshackle and needs extensive work.
Yet in a remote county about 50 miles away, I think you can still get one for $200,000.
Here in the Northwest, we also had an overnight price jump. The explanation on the news was that two local refineries are shut down for the transition to winter blend.
One more post, and then I’ll shut up for the day (10:47 hrs. E.D.T.) .
Of possible interest to — perkycat.
I was entering one of the local library branches yesterday, and as I was walking to the entrance a gentleman came out with his check-outs clasped to his chest.
The title cover of the outermost was facing me. The title read….
‘Crafting With Cat Hair‘…I just had to look it up.
the library’s summary of its content (along with the cover picture) are in the spoiler box.
OMG. I hope I have better things to do. I hope that gentleman has fun!

I have just noticed, on my third or fourth view of the comic, that Perro switches from his right hand to his left and back again in the course of his duel with the evil Slurez. He is just buckling swashes left and right. {Again I crack me up.)
.
Just so you know. The world’s worst cup of tea is still better than the world’s best cup of coffee (and yes, I do drink both).
I refuse to drink out of the toilet ~ no matter what’s in there!!
How does the tank not bop you in the eye with every sip?

Oh ok… Thanks!
It’s been a zillion years since I heard it.
This particular photo must be from the Oscar ceremony though… that’s what’s in her hand.
Roseate Spoonbill
Like the flamingo it’s color comes from the food that it eats.
They basic dabble the same thing.
Since you mentioned flamingo ~ did you hear some flamingoes in Florida took shelter in the restrooms during the storm. Smart birds.
No i didn’t! Wow.
Perro is deadly with the elbow. Not sure if this will convince Slurez to leave, though. Better put a “P” on him.
Three great, totally different songs!
Didn’t want his sword to get all messy. Whatever works!!

Mulled cider
I’ll mull it over.
I have a mulled cider recipe I got off of Cooks.com. It went over pretty well at a potluck at work several years back. I’ll have to go look for it.
¡Dios MIO, Cleomigos!

Not also that production values are enhanced in this episode by the use of not the usual ONE, but TWO cameras.
There’s the artsy handheld camera at floor level, to catch the whirling motion of the fighters, and every nuance of the blade…
(You can tell it’s hand-held by the slight shake and blur in fast motion shots…. very artsy!)
and a new, overhead boom… which must have set Cleo and Company Productions back a pretty peso…
but the shot is just stunning!
My congratulations to the art director!

Yep. 1,200. What can I say. I was half asleep and realized after I’d turned off the computer. Fixed it this morning.
Ni – night
TGIF Perro and Cleo phans!
Fall has fallen this week…. From highs of 86 to 68 and lows in the 60s to mid 40s.
Y’all get muddy! (((((HuGz!)))))
I can’t take this.
Either buy him a box of crackers or put him to bed for a nap; but stop his whining, please! !
On Monday of this week I could have bought gasoline at 134.9 ¢/litre, yesterday I filled the tank at 154.9 ¢/litre (who threw the dart this time).
Same. Last week I paid $3.49/gal. Got a notice today it went up to $3.94. Of course there IS a hurricane 1000 miles away so that’s why.
Here in the Northwest, we also had an overnight price jump. The explanation on the news was that two local refineries are shut down for the transition to winter blend.
How does $2.33 a liter grab ya? Current Vancouver price…
what a great story line……..”beunas noches señor slurez”!
i am waiting for the exciting conclusion!
Yes! I want to see that ‘P’!
