All the human characters in this illustration (see attachment) are women, the cat is of indeterminate sex, but is, per Poe, referred to as “she”.

CHF is ” “Confoederatio Helvetica Franc”, the Latin name of Switzerland.

Wow… are they expensive?

I’ve always wanted some.

I hope Winifred’s is still getting fresh ones in… the children from 1941 are in their 80’s and up by now.

Where’s your witch’s hat? For comments like that you should have your Halloween Avatar up.

Thanks for remembering!

I was reminded the other day, and I explained that I never switch it on Cleo…

It took me forever to get my avatar when this site was new.

But it wasn’t that hard once I figured it out, so I guess I should try it… Maybe for Christmas.

….

After that reminder, I was going to switch it on GoComics, but I’ve hardly been there.

I’ll do that for Christmas, for sure.

Wouldn’t a witch’s hat look kind of silly then?

As soon as I posted that, I read it and thought, “&$#@!.. I bet somebody will comment about my wearing my witch hat for Christmas!”

But I didn’t have time to edit it….

And I was right. 😄

Poster Rule No. 1: There must always be a buxom, pretty young woman helpless in the grasp of the creature. Said scene will appear nowhere in the actual movie.

And King Kong had good intentions… sorta.

So did the original Frankenstein’s monster.

At least, they didn’t know right from wrong, in human’s eyes, but they didn’t intend any harm… especially Kong.

A lot of times the non-human creatures just didn’t know the rules.

They were doing things that come naturally to animals, like grabbing an attractive mate and running off.

In some ways I think those movies were 20th century morality plays.

Shooting down King Kong shows that lust is “naughty” and gets punished….using the excuse that he’s very big, so his desire is worse than yours.

But watch your step anyway.

….

They also display bigotry… the poor guy has green skin, or speaks Martian, or has giant furry feet …

so before we know anything else about him, he must be killed.

Shoot on sight.

Preserve our genetics and protect our womenfolk.

No dam furriners in MY nebberhood.

There is a 4 minute 25 second introduction by Dr. Frank C. Baxter, Professor of English, University of Southern California.
He cites three relatively modern theories (the script’s word not mine) from 1812. the 1870s, and the 1920s about a hollow Earth.
His closing words:

….so in this picture you’re about to see, you’ll see the culmination of a long series of such desires to look into the Earth. One might well believe, philosophically, that some ancient culture, engulfed by a great and tremendous upheaval of nature might linger on in some pocket of Earth.
This is science fiction, of course, it’s a fiction, it’s a fable, beyond fiction. For I think if you’ll study this picture and think about it when it’s over, you’ll realize this is something more than just a story told. It’s a fable with a meaning and a significance for you and for me and the twentieth century.
Thank you, and goodbye.

Hugh Beaumont is, of course, better known for his role as Beaver Cleaver’s father (as I’ve said, I never saw the point of that show).

There isn’t, at least for me, any clutter to click through (but still go full screen).

5:24am Sunday, I finished GoComics and all of Sel & Nighthawk’s wonderful offerings. I got my 2nd Covid booster yesterday and have been just sick enough to be unable to sleep. After tossing and turning for half the night it finally occurred to me why I was so uncomfortable (of course that didn’t fix anything).

So GOOD MORNING Cliophiles!

Probably little comfort, but a reaction can actually be a good sign, as long as it doesn’t go too far.

As I understand it, (simplistically, I’m sure) mRNA (messenger RNA) vaccines contain “instructions” to the cells on how to build antigens, that match parts of the expected pathogen.

The reaction you get from them is your antibodies “learning” to recognise and destroy them, without having been given dangerous live pathogens.

No reaction is usually fine, but can sometimes mean your immune system is not up to par, so the vaccine can’t do its job.

People who are immune impaired or suppressed get little to no reaction, and little protection.

Baby Beatles…

Before they were Beatles or had “Beatle” haircuts or matching suits… or Ringo Starr. Probably before Pete Best.

They were the Quarrymen, here, most likely taken in mid 1958 when George Harrison had just joined.

John Lennon, nearly 18, had thought George was too young, but let him in at 15 1/2. Paul McCartney was about 16.

John and Paul had already written and sung “1 after 909” together, and then “Here Comes the Sun”.

What were you doing at 16 or so?

It’s John Lennon!

At least to the best of my knowledge.

That’s how it was labeled when I found it.

I didn’t know what you were talking about, so I followed your link and also googled Ivan Vaughn, who, yes, was in the Quarrymen, briefly.

The picture at the link is tiny and fuzzy, and happens to have a similar haircut. But you can’t tell anything.

I did find a couple of places where this pic is identified as Ivan…. More often John.

It looks like other pictures of John at that age.

Nonetheless, I’m not that familiar with Ivan.

But I looked into it farther…

Ivan was one of Paul’s best friends, and introduced him to John, in 1957.

He quit the band very soon after that day, right after Paul joined it, and had been gone a long time when George joined in 1958.

He didn’t like rock… They changed from a skiffle band to a rock band with Paul.

Soon after that, everyone left except for John, Paul and George, and in 1960, they changed their name to the Beatles.

Ivan and Paul were still good friends for years, so I can’t guarantee that he didn’t EVER take a photo with Paul and George… But it’s unlikely.

I found a picture of just Paul and Ivan, where his face looks nothing like this…. I forgot to save the link. I’ll try to find it again.

My money is on John, and on that being why this picture is being circulated.

Found it…

I suppose you could make a case for either…

I still vote John, above.

Sure… if you eat a vacuum cleaner’s brains, it’ll be disabled, and unable to attack you.

Very important for self defense, if not particularly nourishing.

What about hose bib brains?

I knew a wire haired terrier so terrified of running garden hoses he attacked them whenever anyone tried to water the plants.

We thought maybe he saw it as a snake… but if the water was turned off it didn’t seem to bother him.

….

One day he noticed water coming out of the hose bib itself, when the hose was detached, and attacked that.

A solid brass faucet is not the best thing for a dog’s mouth.

He broke two teeth… and after that only growled at it a few times a day, on or off… for the rest of his life.

If he could only have eaten its brains and disabled it.
