Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah to all. Waiting for the mob to arrive. It’s supposed to be about 80 here, so I may switch to shorts. Only 76 in San Diego, so it would be a bit more comfortable. Hope you’re all inside where it’s warm and cozy. Stay safe and healthy.
It is the 27th. I’ve been home for a couple of hours, and I just listened to the Hallelujah Chorus flash mob posted above. It seemed as if one of two demographic features were most prominent. Either 1) most of the people in the food court were chorus members. Or 2) A large number of ordinary patrons knew that the tradition during a performance of Handel’s Messiah is for the audience to stand & sing during this Chorus. It comes near the end. People have been sitting for a long time, and the HC is an undeniably celebratory, joyous, piece of music. So everybody stand up, get some circulation back into your legs, adjust your shorts, and get ready for the home stretch. By the conclusion, the camera shots certainly made it look like there were few adults who were NOT singing.
The looks on the children’s faces at this spectacle playing out in front of them were priceless, as were the looks on the faces of many of their parents.
Kudos to the actual flash mob participants for bringing this off using only a small, electronic organ for accompaniment. Without an orchestra, the singers don’t even get the boost that the string section provides, never mind the timpani, trumpets and horns. (Believe me, the principal trumpet part in Messiah is a tour de force. After sitting for at least two hours getting stiff and cold, you have to play The Trumpet Shall Sound, then very shortly thereafter, the Hallelujah Chorus. Good luck.) But this chorus really brought forth a huge sound and a wide dynamic range to sustain the stirring nature of the music.
