Possibly late 19th century, probably early 20th… or in any case, before WWI, when he pretty much stopped painting.

I read that he helped popularise the painting of pets, as opposed to hunting dogs.

So… I can’t help asking…. since the dogs look so natural… what colors were they before he painted them?

Funny! I, too, would rather paint pets than hunt dogs!

Never been a smoker…….do they still make Chesterfield?

I thought they were long gone, but I just Googled them, and they’re still around, though now owned by Phillip Morris, not Ligget and Meyers as they were in all the years my mom smoked them.

When I was little my Dad smoked cigars (Dutch Masters) and my Mom smoked Chesterfield’s…

Before we had an allowance or other money of our own, Dad would give us each a pack of Chesterfield’s to wrap for Mom for her birthday; she would likewise give the three of us together a box of Dutch Masters to wrap for his.

“Surprise!”

I used to think that men smoked cigars and women smoked cigarettes, but I was confused because a favorite uncle smoked Camels.

I decided they must be special men’s cigarettes.

….

They already knew back then that tobacco was bad.

One day in the early 1960’s he announced that he was giving up cigars.

He didn’t even finish what he had. He gave the last ones away, and never smoked again.

It took her a while longer… months, maybe a year, to give up cigarettes, during which time he’d say “Well, I did it, why can’t you?”.

This group of stars’ cigarette addiction (I’m a recovering smoker, it is) did affect their lives, but not to the detriment of their life spans.

Cleo knows who is master around there. You need to listen to Susan Sunshine a little harder, Claude. But, something must be wrong with your hearing if you don’t hear the sound of the saw. Have a nice trip!

I’ve been wondering about the sound in this comic, and others.

It must not be very good.

We never hear it… Nighthawks has said he wishes his animations could have sound.

I’ve realised that the characters even speak to each other in speech balloons.

I always thought that was just to transcribe the conversation for those of us outside the panels, because we can’t hear it out here.

But maybe it’s hard for them to hear everything, as well, and they sometimes use the speech balloons as backup or clarification, themselves.

I hope it’s not totally silent in there, like a 1920’s movie… but I’m pretty sure I’ve seen them react to some sounds.

OMG!

I was having some internet problems earlier tonight, and I couldn’t see the strip, so I gave up for a while.

It happens, but it usually resolves itself after a an hour or two.

I didn’t know I’d be name-checked, or I would have put more effort into coming back earlier.

….

Claude has finally gotten my message!

I’ve written to him and Clara so many times, separately or together, and not received any answer… I just figured they weren’t getting their mail.

I suppose Nighthawks must have told them what I said.

Thanks, Nighthawks! Or Stel, if it was you.

And right… she does have to learn.

Unfortunately, you do too!

You need to learn that she’s not just the sweet innocent pooch you’ve always thought she was…

though I’m sure that aspect of her is in there somewhere.

But she’s also sneaky and devious… and has a weeee problem discerning the difference between some things.

Like, say, between right and wrong. And between teasing and …well, murder.

You need to watch her all the time, and not just let her wander away after you deliver an even slightly harsh message.

She’s not used to it.

….

Cleo loves you, Claude, I’m sure of it… but… I…um… I think you should get up from that chair. NOW!

You never have a visible post after a GC ban, no matter how far back.

Their software doesn’t search for your comments and delete them.

The mods may manually delete comments that got flagged enough, or that caused the problem they noticed, but they don’t go looking for the rest.

The software merely disables the pointers to the URL for your profile page/user account, (or possibly replaces it with a blank one) so nothing you ever said is visible, back to the beginning.

IIRC, neither are replies to you, unless someone typed your name instead of hitting “reply.”

(It’s just like when you universally replace a word in a document.)

It removes none of it…

Not the URL itself, so we can still visit your profile page, if we have it, yet not see the same comments where it looks like you posted them.

If you get reinstated, they enable those links and everything that they didn’t remove is visible again.

Guido’s old comments used to come and go with regularity..

Gopher Gofers most toxic remarks had been removed when for some reason they allowed his return, so they either did search for those, or he got flagged a lot.

In one incarnation of the site, they also unlinked the comments on your profile page, but somehow didn’t shut down the URL…

It opened, with your avatar, but no comments.

A site “update” put them back.

A lot, probably most, were removed before you were even on GoComics.

I thought he and I were friendly at first… We even joked together.

But then he showed up on Andy Capp in 2015 or 16, and started posting horrible things about some regulars, and got Aficionado temporarily banned for his long comments, which he boasted about there.

His daily posted torment about her picture posting made Beviek leave that forum in 2016, and contributed to her decision to leave the site altogether in January 2017.

….

He also said VERY nasty and uncalled for things on 2019 to me and other people about mourning x_Tech… I think it was on Brevity… even calling me an idiot for telling the others that X had passed.

I flagged it, and wrote to the mods, and it was all deleted in a day.

He was banned then, but allowed back within months… Probably with a warning.

….

You may note that his comments get few likes. I think people remember.

I ordered my aunt’s Valentine’s day flowers about an hour ago.
She likes them for Valentine’s rather than Christmas because they bring back memories.
Ontario has a “harmonized” sales tax that totals 13% (8% Ontario / 5% G.S.T.).
So a base price of $79.95 and tax-in delivery charge brought my total Visa Charge to $100.56. Eva, the lady that took my order, has an odd way of stating totals.
When she gave me the total she said it as 156¢ and confused me no end.
It was back and forth clarification because I knew 156¢ wasn’t right, and $156.00, if real, would have caused a cancellation.
Finally, Eva said “Yes, $100 and 56¢” and all became clear.
Just life.
