The open program looks like some kind of publishing software…

Those choices might be works in progress, or possibly templates, for things like announcements, sales materials, and menus.

Of course now I’m curious, and I’ll probably never know. Sigh….

I don’t think I’d ever feel secure, living in that building, or one of those buildings, with a steeply slanted foundation…

Maybe, if it goes a story or two below grade on the uphill side, so the base sits on level ground.

But it still invites flooding, and in fact the painting seems to show water damage to it along the bottom edge.

But I guess I shouldn’t worry about the real estate in a work of art…

Especially with a several-story-tall ship bearing down on the neighborhood anyway.

You don’t have to climb hills every day in San Francisco, unless you live on a steep one.

And usually the higher the hill the higher the rent… even Potrero Hill is no longer cheap.

No way I could live in San Francisco, either…

But that’s because houses cost a million dollars and up, and renting a “cheap” one bedroom apartment is a couple thousand a month.

With the scaffolding going around the ship, I’m guessing it’s berthed and being painted. I’m guessing this is just something in someone’s mind to add emphasis to the art style.

Oh… You’re right.

It’s so tall because we’re seeing the whole hull, all the way down to the keel, not just the part above the water line.

Whew.

True.
And referred to in “It’s a Gift” (W.C. Fields) – “Closed on Account of Molasses”

One thing it doesn’t say is that that enormous quantity of molasses wasn’t being held for sale as is.

It belonged to a distillation company, and was gathered, load after load, some outdated, or damaged, or surplus, to be turned into alcohol…

Thus it was more carelessly stored than were it being bottled and sold as molasses, in a rather rickety and unproven tank that already leaked.

This was right before prohibition started, and a lot of historians think they were holding far more than usual, because they wanted to produce a bumper crop of drinkable ethanol before it was banned.

Max Miller did a Tasting History YouTube video about Boston brown bread six months ago and had quite a bit of info about this in the video.

I’ve seen this before… maybe here, maybe not.. and played with it on my computer

It’s amazing!

If you black out or cover up the little checkered diamonds, or look at it from far enough away, or small enough that you can’t see the pattern, as in the thumbnail, it’s obvious that the blue crossbars are level.

The minute you can discern those tiny diamonds, you can’t see it correctly.

I subscribe to Tom Scott’s videos, and recommend them.

He finds really interesting places to go.

He’s going on hiatus soon… Luckily I have a big backlog to watch.

He’ll probably be back before you could catch up.

It’s a balance, getting the right TV…

You don’t want it to be stupid, but if it’s too smart it might start deciding what you should and shouldn’t watch, or whether you’re up too late, or eating unhealthy snacks.

Of course, you want it to be somewhat bright, or you can’t see the picture.

The Clifford’s new TV is obviously slow… that wouldn’t be good for watching racing.

From that goofy expression, I think it’s a bit pixilated as well.

I’ve always loved “Lady and the Tramp”, but in spite of that wonderful spaghetti-eating scene, like many of those old Disney movies, it traded on stereotypes that don’t play well in 2023.

Some have been banned outright… much as I love “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah”, a film with the likes of Uncle Remus and a tar baby is hard to explain today.

The Siamese Cats have been protested many times over the years… The bad, generic “Asian” accents, the gong, their names (Si and Am) and their villainous behavior, among other things.

Disney apparently made a live action movie (boo!) that swapped this pair for Rex cats, with a different song.

You can still buy the vintage animation, but this scene earned it a warning sticker on the case, denoting racial stereotypes, so parents can explain it to their kids.

You might think that’s silly, but Thai and other southeast Asian children don’t.

“Not-so-smart” televisions are still available, but not easy to find. The big things to be aware of are microphones and cameras. If you don’t want to be recorded, buy a television without these items or physically disable them. Just turning them off leaves the possibility that they can be remotely turned back on (without your knowledge) or you could accidently turn them back on yourself.

Finally, a practical use for electrical tape.
