Parker Brothers believed him at first, but later ended up aiding in the deception.
The game was invented by a woman named Elizabeth Magie over 30 years earlier, as a teaching tool. She called it The Landlord’s Game.
She made it by hand, but patented it in 1904, in almost the same form as when Darrow got his patent in 1935.
…
It went through various versions, was improved upon by different people, some of them professors, who used it in economics classes, or sold their own unauthorized and renamed games.
The streets were usually based on wherever they lived.
By the time Darrow played it, it was called Monopoly, and already had Atlantic City streets, Community Chest and Chance cards, and a lot of the same rules and prices it still has today.
He copied it, took out a patent in his own name, and sold the game to Parker Brothers!
….
When they found out, they ended up buying Magie’s patent, and buying out some intervening inventors who were also selling it under different names, to establish clear ownership.
But all their boxes, instructions, and promotional material, into the 21st century, called it Darrow’s invention
What matters is what is claimed (back section of the patent). What’s more, improvements can be patented even if you don’t own rights to the original. I’d be interested to see in the reference section of Darrow’s patent, if Maggie’s patent is called out. If Maggie’s patent is referenced then it’s on Parker Bros. for not looking into it. Maggie’s would have expired by the time Darrow submitted his patent. I can only assume Maggie got paid to agree not to sell her version in competition with them.
I was sleepy last night (actually this morning!) but i took a quick look at the Wikipedia article because I’d forgotten Lizzie Magie’s name, and some details.
i was pretty sure that Darrow had completely ignored all previous patents and claims, even though he found the game by playing a published version at someone’s house.
….
Today I read.more… I find it interesting, but we all know I’m very easily amused.
Yes, he made no mention, ever.
Parker Brothers found out a month later, and moved to cover up, which included buying Magie’s patents and claim.
…
She had actually renewed her patent in the early 1920s….
but she’d invented the game just to teach and proselytize for an economic system that she felt was still represented by Monopoly.
That’s all she cared about, so she accepted $500 and no royalties.
That would truly be a great sign if placed by someone in an official capacity from either Indiana or an adjoining state. A sense of humor is important in civil service.
Claude looks at it as the calm before the storm, does he?
But of course, as neither a teaching opportunity, nor a chance to stop the disruption before it occurs.
Neither he nor Clara seems to regard Cleo as their dog…. I mean, a dog belonging to them, for whose actions they can be held responsible….
Or an animal who should be under their control.
…
She’s a dog who lives under their roof… a canine friend, a partner, whom they feed and support, but over whose life they seem to have little influence, except for occasionally denying funds, or by making a displeased comment, with no punishment attached.
What’s a blown up building, a stolen vehicle, or a few dead squirrels, between friends?
I was startled by this meeting being called remarkable and significant.
This is the behavior we expect of our leaders.
The writer even called it American tradition and a cornerstone of democracy…. what’s remarkable, and not in a good way, is an elected leader who strays from our foundational ideals.
I hope I don’t crash the C&C site today. No particular reason I should, but everything I touched this weekend has been catastrophic. The worst two: I backed my car out to wash it and rubbed against a cabinet on the way out. I took the paint off the front right wheel well flair. Which leads to number two, I got touch-up paint and was trying to figure out where the “brush” tip and “pen” tip were, I opened the tube and tipped slightly pouring blue paint on our brand new, white quartz counter top. Instant paper-towels weren’t quick enough. we scrubbed with Dawn, then switched to quartz cleaner. We did manage to eventually get all of the blue out, so my wife didn’t have to kill me.

There are several video feeds you can select. Check out “green dot”. It’s the tower directing planes to land on the last half of runway 27. There is no radar at Oshkosh, this is all visual direction.

Warm dog on a cool floor!

Great photo. That is what I call a service dog.
I don’t know what ails that little boy, but I know the dog doesn’t care.

Just as we hoomans try to get a glimpse of outside to know what’s going on, so dogs try to get a whiff.

A descendant of Clarence, perhaps?
as Bugs Bunny used to say:
“mmmmmm COULD be!”
Darrow totally stole the game!

Elizabeth Magie’s patent drawing, from 1904:
Btw… I saw a PBS program about this years ago… I think it was an episode of the History Detectives.
And it seems Darrow did add some design elements, like the locomotives, and possibly the pewter tokens.
not fair!

I’m amazed that the inner tube and the car missed each other.
Really brilliant to roll towards a street!
I can’t tell whether the car braked just in time, or slightly tapped him…
But he’s very lucky!
Unless he wasn’t intending to go into the pool.
No matter… It’s still way better than being run over.
A round Poiuyt!
A tire for driving on a Möbius highway?
So that’s how the inner tube managed to not be hit by that car.

Gosh Stel, I guess you’re not worried about job security.

It wasn’t remarkable. It was normal. What’s happening now isn’t.
Exactly what I wanted to say!
