Essentially the area from DC through Baltimore, Philadelphia, & NYC is one enormous metroplex. You can travel from the heart of one end to the heart of the other in jig time by train. If you want to, you can lengthen that metro area through Hartford and Boston. All kids of shuttle services available between and among them to make it easy.

I read the ads, and asked for one every Christmas till I was about ten…

And that was what my mother always said (minus the “kid”).

Meanwhile my cousin got one when he was FOUR, and a real 22 when he was six.

His father, my uncle Buddy, was kind of a farm boy, and took him hunting and fishing, and taught him to handle weapons.

….

Funny thing is, now I’m more on my mother’s side when it comes to giving kids guns…

And I don’t like war toys at all.

I meant to say that I read “A Christmas Story” years before the movie, which I’ve never seen, came out…

It was serialized, actually, presented as separate excerpts from Jean Shepherd’s short stories. I’m pretty sure it was in Playboy. (Yes, so what… They used to publish some good fiction.)

It totally cracked me up when Ralphie’s mother and teacher both said the same thing my mom said.

And no, I’m not from the same era as Ralphie, but that Red Ryder bb rifle was still manufactured for at least another 20 or more years after his time.

Just like him I used to see it in comic books, including a free Red Ryder comic that was essentially an ad for the rifles.

I am quite fond of the work of Jean Shepherd.

Daphne Bigelow and the Spine-Chilling Saga of the Snail Encrusted Tin-Foil Noose

And, yes, I read them in Playboy.

30 in one puzzle is a bit too much for one night.

I’m still working on it.

In the spoiler box are my guesses so far.

I’ll edit it with new guesses later (I hope!) before I peek at anyone else’s.

A blank or a question mark means I don’t know yet.

A question mark after a guess means I’m not very convinced I have it right.

So far I’ve got….
Moving across the rows…

1. Up up and away

2. Stairway to heaven?

3.

4. Leaning tower of Pisa

5.

6. Commas U R …. IE “come as you are”??

7. 40 yard line?

8. Left behind

9. Glory train?

10. Singing in the rain

11. Once upon a time in America

12.

13. Bold statement

14. Little Miss Sunshine

15. Always on my mind.

16. Endless love (literally “infinite love” but I think it probably represents the title.)

17. ?? Something about square music?

18. Wind beneath my wings.

19. Going wide? Or going long? Whatever the football thing is.

20. Thin Lizzy? (Can’t really see it very well on my tablet)

21. ?? (Can’t make out the symbol in white)

22. ??

23. ?? (Maybe something about cracking me up… Or how about “Do you want a piece of me?”)

24. Snaps out of it?

25. Blade runner

26. ?? (Reminds me of a line from the movie Dirty Dancing “nobody puts Baby in a corner!” … But I don’t think that would be a puzzle answer.

27.

28. The Empire Strikes Back

29.

30. Pumped up.

Note to Alexi… Why don’t you try it before you go looking up the answer?

19 why not…
20 looked like uzzy to me.
23 is a movie title.

And the correct 18 is a real song title.
19 who knows. It could be that too.
What is uzzy?

Ok… I got an far as I was going to get so i went to the site at the bottom of the puzzle and brought back the official solution.

Here are the answers they’re looking for:

Plus some notes….

P51 you’re right on 3 … I guess you realized they’re conflating Italian and Italic. And on 17. Close enough for me on 22.

And you and I got 20, 24, 25… And 19 (well, sort of, for me). Well, you agreed with me… If that constitutes solving 😁

Tigressy, you probably have the right title on 5, in my opinion… but maybe not from their strange clue. They think it’s called Total Ellipsis of the Heart and 3 dots is an ellipsis, not an eclipse.
(You do a lot better than I’d do in German!)

I’m right on 6 and 7.
And 18 and 19, and 26 in spite of myself.
I’m kinda accidentally partly right on 23?

None of the three of us got 9, 12, 16, 21, 27 or 29 correct!
What the heck is 29 anyway?

1. Up, Up And Away
2. Stairway To Heaven
3. Italian Sausage
4. Leaning Tower Of Pisa
5. Total Ellipsis Of The Heart
6. Come As You Are – Nirvana
7. 40 Yard Dash
8. Left Behind
9. The Glory Path
10. Singing In The Rain
11. Once Upon A Time In America
12. Apartment
13. That’S A Bold Statement
14. Little Miss Sunshine
15. Always On My Mind
16. Eternal Love
17. Music Box
18. Wind Beneath My Wings
19. Going Long
20. Thin Lizzy
21. Here’S Looking At You
22. I’M Melting
23. Pieces Of Me
24. Snap Out Of It
25. Blade Runner
26. Nobody Puts Baby In The Corner
27. The Long And Winding Road
28. The Empire Strikes Back
29. Stand In The Place
Where You Live
30. Pumped Up

Some tricky word play on some, but still logical; EXCEPT number 26. I can’t accept that. The answer is literally the opposite of what is shown. I think everyone thought of that scene, and rejected it. The puzzle maker DID put baby in the corner.

I guess I’m fussier….

I don’t accept number 5, because it’s wrong. Even if they had the title correct, it’s isn’t correctly clued. Or number 3, because Italic is not Italian.

The clue for 9 isn’t specific enough to get it right, and for 13 and 22, they only clued half the answer in their solution.

Oh well… just a bit of fun.
Fun.

Right? 😬

Regarding #5 – that’s not the first time they made that kind of error.
That’s why I chose that as my solution.
And those two words are similar to the English ones in German.

Oh – and thank you for the compliment! Much appreciated.

Oh! I think “stand in the place where you live” is not the title, but the first line of not my favorite REM song.

Cleo isn’t wanting it for wasps, of course.

She just likes the idea of a flame throwing drone.

She figures that once she has it, she can think of what to use it for.

Which, unfortunately, will be cats and squirrels.

But just you watch… her indulgent dog-parents will buy her one, and then be surprised at how she deploys it.

Sigh…. Confound it, Claude and Clara!

DZIOB! (responding to the Suzanne Vega number). Suzanne, can’t you do better than these two flat footed guys for backup dancers?!

Suzanne Vega has a beak??

Anyway, to me, a lackluster song with lackluster dancers…

Beefy, instead of lithe or graceful, which to me, dancers, male or female, should be.
