OK, I’m drooling. What’s in that? Looks like pork, pineapple and pickled cabbage with a piquant sauce.

Given the way it’s made, it pretty much has to have an odour.

From:
Dominion Home Canning Guide “The Key to Successful Canning”
Western Edition
Published by: The Dominion Glass Co., Limited (year of publication unknown 194x?)
General Offices: Montreal, Que.
Western Division Factory: Redcliff, Alta.

SAUERKRAUT

20 lbs. cabbage
1/2 pound     (7/8 cup) salt

Select firm, sound, mature heads of cabbage.  Remove outer leaves; wash well Quarter,
remove core and slice very finely.  Put 5 lbs. (about 7 1/2 quarts) shredded cabbage in
a pan, add 2 oz. (3 1/2 tablespoons) salt and mix with hands.  Place in deep crock or tight
wooden keg and tamp down firmly with wooden masher to extract juice and force
out air.  Repeat until all cabbage is used.  Press down, cover with a clean white cloth,
then with a plate or round wooden board small enough to fit down inisde crock, and
weigh down with a clean stone or brick, to keep cabbage covered with brine that forms
as salt draws juice from cabbage.  Keep in a warm place, 75 to 85 degrees F. Inspect
each day, remove scum with spoon, and rinse cloth in clear water.  The kraut will be
fermented or “cured” in 10 to 20 days, depending upon the amount of cabbage and the
temperature at which it is kept.  Its appearance and taste will tell you when it is suffi-
ciently cured.  Kraut may be left in the crock or keg all winter, in a cold cellar or base-
ment, if care is taken to remove any scum that forms; or it may be canned any time
from 1 to 3 months after fermentation is completed.  Simply drain off juice, pack cold
kraut into hot sterilized glass jars to 1/2 inch from top; heat juice to boiling, pour over
kraut, seal and store in cool dark place.  Do not process.

Note from me:

Processing means a boiling water bath before sealing the jars.

My little girl loves Pentatonix. They came to LR. I bought the VIP package. She got to meet them all. I was a hero.
P.S. They are amazing.

Pentatonix is always amazing.

This is one of the only “Bohemian Rhapsody” performances that IMHO rivals Queen…

and their (Leonard Cohen) Hallelujah is great too…. though I have a fondness for Puddles Pity Party.

@ StelBel

I posted an answer and attachment to your “Face with Symbols” question yesterday.

Another thing I have discovered.
If you’re running Windows 10 right click on your taskbar and check the “Show touch keyboard line.”
This will put the button on your taskbar.
Left click on that button when you want to add a smiley to your comment.
I put an attachment below showing (I hope) everything clearly.

Stel AND Alexi…

Thanks, Alexi…

I think it should be noted that those are emoticons for INSIDE your own comments, where you are responsible for what you say.

I have no objection to that, as long as you know I may not be able to discern them.

It’s the embedded emoticon link UNDER each comment I object to.

That’s how some anonymous person or persons left a dozen or so emojis under my comment on the subject, and on Stel’s.

Maybe Nighthawks making a joke; maybe someone(s) who liked or didn’t like the comments…

I just don’t think one or two people should be able to pile on negative OR positive “reviews” with no accountability.

(Unless perhaps NH and Stel can tell who left them and are willing to take a stand to stop abuse and bullying.)

BTW, yes, the onscreen keyboard is a bit more like a mobile keyboard…

It has some functions not available on a physical one, being less limited in the number of keys and their labelling…

In addition to emojis it has a couple of symbol and punctuation layers.

I used it to type ñ in Señorita before saving it in the clipboard.

BTW you can also get far more emojis online and save them in a word document, (or a text document if you select different encoding from ANSI like UTF-8).

I have a document from which, if I’m not feeling lazy, I can paste all kinds of saved symbols…

♔ ॐ ☜

But it’s very tedious, and few worked on GoComics. We’ll see about here.

I wrote a reply to your comment and then you changed it…

I thought that made my reply disappear…. but it ended up at the bottom of the page, where it makes no sense…

nor does it fit your revised comment… but I’m gointg to paste it back up here anyway.

You had originally wondered whether I was saying you were a bully… I said…

No, not exactly… note that my first guess was “Nighthawks making a joke.”

But there’s always a thin line between humor and mockery.

Having emojis piled onto a post in which you objected to emojis… it’s humor to me because I play rough with sarcasm.

Some people don’t… or can’t… or might be experiencing just that sort of day, emotionally.

‘…

Kids on the playground, especially, feel bullied when they’re mocked…. and some adults never get over it.

I think anybody starts to feel bullied if it goes too far, or comes from someone with…

lets just say with what seems like a shortage of humorous intent.

I just don’t like handing that sort of person a free toolbox for abuse,

after we just reined in the free-for-all of anonymous thumbs.

As a matter of fact, I had to publicly ask, and you had to confess before I knew whether to take it as a joke from you…

and you say you were limited to 5… that means SEVEN on mine came from other people.

All of whose motives are unknown.

Don’t forget that the old GoComics trick of controlling magnification of the whole page:     “ctrl +”    “ctrl –    and    “ctrl 0” work here.  Really well, too.

I agree with you and StelBel about the emoji thing and anonymity, anonymous kicks can be very hurtful if one is down-in-the-dumps.  On a daily basis however, I remember every mother’s advice to every child on this planet:    —    “Consider the source.”    —    and ignore them.

Better yet, Cleo can go out and build herself a dog house and stay there if she finds the smell so offensive. I, on the other hand, would like some sausage, kraut and boiled taters with some hot mustard. Thats some good eatin’!

I have to say that I’m with Cleo on this one. The only cabbage I like is in coleslaw. Do Not like it cooked. You might spend a little more time outside, Cleo.😝

Perkycat, you might try it roasted. Toss in oil and salt, roast at 425 for 15-20 minutes stirring once. It gets crunchy and doesn’t have that boiled cabbage smell. We did it for the first time last month and were pleased.

Whenever I have leftover cabbage from coleslaw, I fry it in butter, add kielbasa and cooked egg noodles. It tastes a lot like peirogi without the work.

Why would Cleo complain about a dead cow? She enjoys all cuts of beef, whether steak, ribs, cheeks, round, or internal organs.

Honestly. Any dog complaining about a strong smell is simply unbelievable. Now if she didn’t want to EAT any of it, I could accept that.

Our late Dachshund loved the casing of Bavarian white sausages.
Once upon a time, she got a whole sausage as a special treat which she (very respectfully) buried.
Months(!!!) later, my parents and me (a teenager back then) were watching the evening news, my father sitting in his favorite chair. And our loving, devoted Purzel-girl layed said thoroughly ripened exhumed processed meat onto his slippers (his feet in)…

I posted this way too late on yesterday’s page…

so I’m reposting it here…. for StelBel and Liverlips:

Stel was kind enough to clarify her basset star of Dogspell…

so while my internet was out tonight, I did the same for the 3 lipped fish that so confused me and Liverlips.

As I said there:

Here she is in her DogSpell makeup…

You did know she had a role in it, right?

Why else would her picture be up there?

I mean, we don’t fill up our posts with totally unrelated stuff, right?

It is so related.

It’s related to Susan’s comment about never posting unrelated things on this site.

….and as both comments are on this site….

😀 😀

On a weird note:

When I first open the site I’ll get the comment counter and the same number of associated comments;    but if I then immediately refresh my screen the comment count will often jump up with more comments that should have shown up at opening as they were sometimes made hours before I opened this time.

Not harmful, just weird.

Too bad I saw the No Housework Day after I cleaned the kitchen and the bathroom. Then again, it would be hard to see it first since I usually try to do my cleaning first thing in the morning. On work days, that means before breakfast.

No… Steve’s emoji is INSIDE his own comment.
Not entered anonymously by clicking an icon on the blog.

Anybody can type emojis into their comments, like these: 🙂 🙁 and even o.O

Most can also enter graphic ones, on a mobile keyboard, like this one on my tablet… 😁 🤔😷👍and more…💃🐇🍔🍻 !!

or, as Alexi pointed out, by using the similar onscreen (virtual) Windows keyboard (or Mac or Linux if they have them)…

Or by cut and paste from wherever they find them, like I did in an earlier comment.

….

Even poor Rotifer can put in ALL the emojis he wants.

As long as they’re part of his comment, so we know who they came from.

The ones I typed with punctuation, like : and then – and then ) were converted into graphic ones when I posted…. like this 🙂 (if it happens again)

Which means that for standard ones it recognises, you don’t need anything but a regular keyboard.

Experiment: 😉 😎 :-p :-/ :c)
