Spanky, the early years? Looks like so much fun. And, yes, his fingers are already dirty. Wanna bet there will be more mud on him before he’s through?

The original Spanky was in Our Gang when he was even younger than this!

That is not a name you would find here in the UK……

Nor here.

I didn’t know who invented it…
It started as his nickname in the Our Gang comedies, around 1930, but as he was only a toddler, became what he was called in real life.

Any other Spanky I’ve heard of is named after that character.

Yup… I was going to mention them cos it’s pretty obvious where that Spanky got his nickname!

It reminds me… My closest girlfriend, other then Stel, is English.

Her brother moved to the US a few years after she did, in the mid 1970s.

He wanted to name his first son “Chip” because it was the most “American” name he could think of..

We had to convince him that we don’t really name anybody Chip.

I’m not saying there’s nobody called Chip… but it’s a (dated and unfortunate IMHO ) nickname.

Spanky is even worse!

I have suspicions. The post is aimed the wrong way. Since it is a single speaker post, the orientation would indicate the end of the row. The car would then be on the outside.

Oh! there is a “Do Not Touch sign”. That indicates a car show.

I’ve never seen a carhop tray at a drive-in movie either.

Different kind of drive-in… though that might just be in the places I’ve lived.

At the movies you walked to the snack bar…

The ground was often gravel, with ruts and hills…. not suitable for anyone carrying trays, or especially for roller skating.

No real orchid has shiny eyeballs.

And cartoon eyelashes.

Plus, it looks like that’s a big cut-out in the bottom petal through which you can see the background… but if so, where’s its stem?

Not to mention that there’s a different type of blossom on the same plant, below the “orchid”.

I used to have a small collection of stuff like this…

It’s only meant to be funny.

Alexi’s link says this company invented dehydrated water in the early 1960s… but I had some much older than that, a gag gift from the 30s or 40s. An empty can, I’m sure, but I never opened it.

I also had a packet of “instant water” I bought new in the 60s, from a gift shop near Yellowstone park… along with a rattlesnake in an envelope, which had a thin wind-up mechanism inside that you could set so it “rattled” if someone started to open the envelope.

There were a couple of different (I assume empty) cans of San Francisco fog, and some rattlesnake meat, which night have been real, but I didn’t open those either. Fresh air in a can from someplace.

And a bit more but I can’t think of it…

Oh… A very small can of Seattle rain.. probably full of actual water.

A couple of friends knew I liked silly jokes, so guess what I’d get for my birthday.

You can still buy variations of most of it was in novelty shops and airport gift shops.

There is a store in Washington that specializes in stuff like that.
They invented some of it.
Olimpia?

I’d love it.. though I’m not allowed (by me, but I’m pretty fierce) to buy any more useless stuff.

At least I try.

Cool… But I wouldn’t even be tempted to buy anything at those prices!

I bought my stuff like that when it was considered junk…

I remember I sent several friends the rattlesnake envelopes cos they were 65¢.

Yeah yeah… I know.

The best way to cook spinach is to wilt it in bacon fat and add the cooked crumbled bacon into it just before eating.
Not all of the bacon fat. You need enough to just cover the bottom of the skillet.
Dump in a bag of cleaned ready to go baby spinach. Stir from bottom up until its all wilted. Stop when it is wilted or you cook all the flavor out.

Mom and pop were from the south. They fried everything! 😀
It’s also my favorite way to have green beans. Fried in bacon fat with crumbles!

I should have read this before I replied to Greyhame.

I prefer this as a big salad, with the spinach still raw, before it has a chance to wilt… with a little of the melted bacon grease and a little blue cheese dressing, or crumbles, and a couple of chopped hard boiled eggs.

It’s a whole dinner.

Waiting for the fishing fleet to come home for the night.

Well, not the fleet, exactly… but any fish that just happen to fall their way.

Fallen, broken, too small, wrong species caught in the nets… Maybe even occasionally sneaked to a hungry cat by a soft hearted deck hand…
Or filched by a deftly sly claw.

Hey, when you’re a cat, fish is fish.

First you have to be able to appreciate silliness for the fun of silliness. It’s not for everyone.
Mom was the same way with slapstick. She just didn’t get it. 🙂

The crab’s mouth parts don’t look real, and there is a strap or something just behind the gator’s head. I believe this is a statue with a saddle/seat for tourists to get pictures of their kids on it.

Good eye…

But the straps appear to be a harness, not for sitting on the crab.

Apparently there are more than one, some without crabs, some with open mouths…. in Florida.

I saw it labeled Florida Alligator and also Reingator… and used as a Christmas display.

I’m guessing the cats were already familiar with the trains because otherwise the sound of the electric motor would likely cause them to hesitate, if not step back or run away.
