If it’s a photo it’s been heavily sharpened and saturation’s been unrealistically increased. I don’t know what else has been done; note that the sky seen between the tree branches is a different shade of blue than the rest of the sky. I’ve played with a lot of pictures and I focus in on my own most common errors when analyzing them. Getting the sky right in all those little openings requires near infinite patience (which neither I nor this artist, possess)..
I think it was a belt with foam pads to help beginning swimmers in the water. If they tired, the belt was supposed to be loose enough to slip up to under the arms to keep the head above water. I doubt it would have been practical.
I agree that those things would affect the strength of flavor.
Because the ad is implying a medical basis, I was thinking they meant the actual percentage of cocoa content, which would be 100% for all unless it’s adulerated.
Who knows… Back then they could say anything!
…
Until 1906, and the Pure Food and Drug Act, in the US, they could (and did) also use fillers like ground wood chips… But this ad doesn’t look quite that old.
Do you know when they passed a similar law in Germany?
Probably before ours, because even the medieval guilds forbade such things in Europe.
I guess I didn’t actually submit my comment on the strip :).
But really, why would anyone want to sleep in a cold, drafty stone castle, when she could sleep on the icy wet ground, wrapped in leaves, with deer nibbling her toes?

Very handsome birds. They git a bad rap.
It’s not their rap, it’s their c•rap
Could be worse. Could be gulls. 😀
I speak from experience!

I had just read the book and I was excited to see the movie.
It was a lesson in not expecting movies to be like the book.
Looking back, I enjoyed it… At the time, I was angry with it.
Same thing with War of the Worlds. You have to learn that even if the movie doesn’t follow the book it can still be a good film.
I don’t think so, why is there a dashed line on the very edge?

Now this is a real photo from ancient Egypt. Full color, very rare. ☺
I was thinking that too.
Printed on papyrus, right?
With…um… camel’s milk ink?
Every dog should learn one trick
Buddy knows two. Sit, and catch the treat.
I know that view well. 😀

I’m trying not to say it, but you know I have to….
Her name is Spot.
Puzzle: spot the dog.
A couple days ago there was a “spot the cat” but the cat didn’t even have any spots.
Well… I think this dog has already been spotted.
Where do you suppose they got the inspiration for the pattern on the upholstery?

This must be fairly old, because a few of these expressions are a bit dated.
I think I have all but three… I’ll come back and edit this if I figure those out, or think of any better answers.
Oops just thought of one of the missing ones. It definitely includes a rather quaint expression, though some people still say it.
Anybody else trying this?
1. Oil
2. Water
3. Square
4. Wax
5. Slow
6. False
7. Ice
8. Good
9. Deep
10.

I agree on all,
11 Midnight
On number 10, the middle one is a bit outdated.
Oops… Didn’t see this till I refreshed after posting.
Before I look at Alexi’s link….
#10… yeah … Good job
“Life belt” is only vaguely familiar to me.
Probably my ignorance of the term, not that you’re wrong.
#11… I’m guessing you’re probably right…
#11 Okay, I admit that I’ve never actually heard that term, but I can think of a couple of fun answers. ☺
A LINK to the answers at Puzzles World (all of Susan’s are correct).

I doubt that there will be any tarantulas in that bunch.

Not racist at all.
Cocoa is nothing but cacao beans, finely ground after the oil has been pressed out of them.
I’m not sure how one brand can be stronger than another.
I guess I should ask the highest medical authorities.
It really depends on the methods of fermenting, drying and roasting the nibs.
Yes, and also your definition of “stronger”.
I agree that those things would affect the strength of flavor.

Diplomas? Must be smart cocoa.
I feel asleep posting here in the wee hours…

That would be so romantic, wouldn’t it?
Soooo romantic.
So very romantic…
I’ll..um… I’ll get back to you on that.
