France gave the statue to the US, funding it with donations from the people of France to honor American liberty.
The US was to gather donations from the American people to fund the pedestal… It almost didn’t get built.
Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi, the sculptor, wanted us to also gold plate the copper, but that proved far too expensive.
Inside, the statue is made of various materials, mostly metals, over a hollow steel frame designed by Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel, designer of the Eiffel Tower, who was hired by Bartholdi.

“To make money in Cuba you have to be ingenious.
This man has three dachshunds that he dresses up in various attire and they SING together!
The dogs have watches, leather jackets, sunglasses, beads….anything you can think of…and they all sing in harmony into the microphone.
Tourists love the act and because of his ingenuity, this man & his dogs are a hit on the streets of Havana!”
I thought it looked photoshopped, mostly because of the white edges of the dog. But if you look closely, it’s wearing Cuban pins on its bow-tie.

In fact, I don’t mean to be catty or anything, but it’s so pretty I really don’t think it’s her.
Jane Wyman (Ronald Reagan’s first wife, BTW) was nice looking, but not a perfect, classical beauty like this. She had very prominent cheeks, and not this delicate oval face.
I’m thinking this is Vivien Leigh… who played Scarlett O’Hara in “Gone With the Wind.”

Engelbert Humperdinck is the actual name of an actual person. He was a German composer, born in the mid 1800’s, died in the 1920’s. He wrote operas and vocal music, Hansel und Gretel being his most famous. Why Mr. Dorsey chose it for his stage name is anyone’s guess.
