My curiosity got piqued about spider frying pans. It’s a designation that has expanded to a wider selection of objects, but the picture in the attachment is of a true spider frying pan.

Littleton Spider Corn Cakes
The lead in to the recipe…
“This is a very old recipe from New Hampshire. The corn cakes
have a more robust corn taste but are still moist and light.
Originally the corn cake was undoubtedly cooked on a spider
or skillet over the fire, but the oven gives more even baking.”
1 1/3 cups cornmeal
1/3 cup flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup sour milk see Note from me:
2 eggs, well beaten
2 cups regular milk (whole milk 3.25% Milk Fat)
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
11/2 tablespoons butter
Preheat the oven to 350° F. Mix the cornmeal, flour, and baking
soda in a large bowl. Stir in the sour milk, eggs, 1 cup of the regular
milk, sugar, and salt, and blend well. Melt the butter in a 9-inch
square pan and film the sides. Add the mixture to the pan and pour
the remaining cup of milk over the top. Bake for about 45 minutes.
Cool and cut in squares. (16 SQUARES)
Note from me:
Elsewhere in the book buttermilk is recommended as a substitute for any sour milk called for.
I see all of the punny stuphph is taken up in today’s toon. Looks like even the resident punsters are stumped.
April 26th 2011 BS is missing. Got a little concerned that the GS geniuses had pulled the series. Gotta at least like it to keep those blue meanies from taking down the forum.
A bag of nice crunchy, salty pretzels or a big, warm, soft, cinnamon pretzel is the question of the day.
Y’all get outside if you live around here. Mid 70s and 80s for the next 3 days. (((((HUGz!)))))
Dunno what your game is, but I’m a foot ahead of you so far…

How long do you bake this on top of the fire in your brand new $165.00 U.S. spider?
I haven’t a clue. 🙄

Dunno how I would use this in my kitchen, nor where I would store it.
Dennis, you need a fireplace to use this. Something I’d love to have in my kitchen someday, but for now I’d have to use the one in the family room.
And if it’s meant to catch drippings, it would have to be a rather large fireplace, tall enough to hang the roast or fowl with this underneath.
BTW – at the time this was regularly used, veggies were NOT sauteed. They were boiled to death in a different kind of pot.
That would fit in well with my collection of campfire cookware.
You want to strap this on your back when you go camping? True dedication!
So… do you have to have a special oven so the legs don’t fall through the rack?
The game is a foot, and pan has three. And so I wonder, who wants gamey corn cakes?
The Edward Sharpe video is the most fun!
Didn’t anybody ask Watson how much the game was a foot?
After all, it takes three feet to make one yard.
..
I don’t know much (read “anything“) about football….
but I’ve heard people talk about gaining yards…. and sitting on (I think) 50 yard lines…
That’s a lot of feet.
…
And what about back yard games?
How many feet are they?
…
Somebody should ask Watson just how much a foot.
Good morning, Cleopunsters and JP!

All week of SUN and 60/70’s for us!
(I’ll have a pretzel to go.)
You got our snow, and now you are getting the week that followed! It was glorious, even one 80 degree day.
Woo hoo! Kids and pets!
…
Awww! Beautiful tweete bird!

Chernobyl disaster, 35 years ago…
Interestingly, a recent study has shown no statistically significant genetic damage to kids born to the people exposed to the radiation.
If the fetus is healthy enough to grow into a baby.
Not to mention the increased cancer rate here.

That strip was just beautiful, and then the song! Thanks for sharing!
Loved that one. And so true!
Good morning Balladeers, (((((Plods))))) and Miss Susan.
Poor Clara. She has to LIVE with these two! At least we can just turn the page….
Love the artwork with the steer transformation!
Clara should join in. We have a lot of fun with these types of conversations in our house. The pets have never been interested, though.
One upmanship never goes good…
I was waiting for Clara to use her feet on both of them and make them do the dishes.
The game is afoot, but it’s a game of inches.
