What creates this optical illusion?

I think it’s just the alternating positions of the 4 tiny black or white diamonds that fill each slightly larger diamond at the intersections.

Yeah… this was just a quick experiment, so not totally regular…

… even so,

look what happens when you start to block that part of the pattern:

It’s hidden just to make sure I don’t interfere with the illusion for anybody.

Last night I looked at it just before going to bed, and could see them horizontally quite well. Do you think my glass of wine had anything to do with it?

You have to squint hard enough so that you can’t distinguish the pattern of the teeny black and white diamonds.

Just as in the version I posted where I covered them up… when you can’t see them switching positions, the illusion vanishes.

I haven’t figured out why… But the alternation somehow sets our eyes on the wrong path.

Poor Dean; trapped in a bathtub too deep to escape from. Hounded into giving up his precious scent. But he’ll show you. He’ll just thrash around in his bed amongst the fabric that’s already imbued with ……… …….. wait ……. what’s this ……. ……. you’ve laundered my blankets! How could you? It took me months to get them like that and I was happy with it. Dang it!
Okay, I’ll forgive you if you play with me and give me some affection.

The writer has been reading too many YouTube comments.

My recent favorite there was about a director … don’t remember who…

but the commenter said he was “held in highest steam.”

Why isn’t Cleo down there saying something …um… ironic?

Speaking of which… Nighthawks, I rose to your pun challenge late yesterday…

though… sigh… I think no one would say I achieved much height.

Good morning, Company Phans!

I had a phone like that. Used to iron my butt cheek.

National (take your pick) Day. Holy carp! Maybe they should’ve spread these out a bit.

Y’all go stomp on that lump in the rug. (((((HuGz)))))

If you’re using it to comment on GoComics, most definitely! (Somewhat less if you’re commenting on Cleo & Co. 😉 )
