I broke the neighbor’s dogs. 3 mile walk. Renamed them too. Scratch (likes to sit in the middle of the street and scratch) and Sniff (hasn’t found anything that doesn’t need a 20 minute sniff).
Which, like the rest of the stone surrounding the monument, luckily is said to be too unstable to support any more carving.
All that rubble piled at the base is unstable rock chipped and blasted from the mountain by the original crew in order to get to bedrock, after the first face broke during carving, and had to be moved.
Also, the whole monument is the design of, and most of the work was done under the supervision of, one man, sculptor Gutzon Borglum… and finished under the supervision of his son when he died.
The Park Service considers it to be a finished sculpture, credited to Borglum, and it was long ago declared a historical monument by Congress.
The land is sacred to the Lakota Sioux, who also have a say in what is done to it.
So it would need many reviews and approvals… geological, first… environmental, Congressional (both houses), the Sioux Nation… maybe taking years.
But appropriately named lunatic Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna did introduce a bill in Congress this year directing that another face be added.
Hopefully it won’t get far enough to start the lengthy process.
Isn’t it nice to be able to say and post something in a country where you don’t get arrested for posting it? Freedom of speech needs to be protected and cherished.
