you can see…
Cary Grant and Alfred Hitchcock, at the desk… on the set of “North by Northwest.”

Red eyes in every high school corridor…
Girls older than us wearing black crepe paper armbands.

My sister and I were kids. We knew who he was, and thought he was “cute”, but weren’t allowed to see his movies.

Our older friend, though, who lived down the street…. all of 10, herself, but as she told my father, almost a teenager… wept openly for days, and started signing her papers at school with Dean as her last name.

My Dad had told her to stop being ridiculous… and when that brought forth torrents of waterworks, he forbade us to go to her house, which made her parents angry…
Her grandmother was also our landlady, and our families were all friends.

Seems in my memory that it took eons to blow over… It may have actually been only days, cos we had resumed our crosstown walks to her grandmother’s bakery long before we left Cleveland the next spring.

But when we were moving she said we should write to each other. She wrote her address, which I already knew, on a piece of paper, and said I should keep it forever…. And she’d put Dean for her last name.

Took a while, but I finally got my eyes into the right mode, and there it was.

Dunno if it’ll work for others but…

here’s a possible viewing hint:
I tilted my tablet a bit away, to the right… not rotated, tilted on a vertical axis, like opening the door outward a little bit, say, just enough to let in the cat.

If you can’t tilt your monitor away to the right, you can move your head. Then relax your eyes. For me, it makes the letters a wee bit brighter than the background.

Also …

It’s rather out of season!

If you look at the model, who has a very nice figure, and the painting, comparing bit by bit, you can see that the artist added just a bit more roundness to almost every part… not enough to make her fat… a little more voluptuous. Forearms, calves, cheeks, breasts.

If she stood up though, she’d be a little plump, compared to the model.

Nowadays, an art director would ask someone painting that model to make her look thinner.

Women like Rachel on Friends or Penny on Big Bang Theory (yeah, they’re old shows… I don’t watch TV) have to be not much over half the size of the blonde in the painting, who would be cast as the “fat” neighbor.

It’s cruel that bodies have to be fashionable.

I’m familiar with Hilda… I used to think she was a joke, not a sex symbol, but then I read that she was one of the most popular calendar pinups in the 1950s.

I don’t think a lot of joke calendars hung in gas stations.

Anyway… I’m not saying there haven’t always been a few popular larger size sex symbols… Look at Anna Nicole Smith… only that it’s interesting that body types come and go in fashion… and sometimes sad, when girls are made to feel that they have the “wrong” type.

Sad thing is, I’d pretty much eliminated two, though of course I couldn’t be absolutely sure… but I had fairly good reasons.

So it was down to two possible definitions, and I still guessed wrong.

In my (admittedly rather limited) experience, when they finally achieve a great smell, just the way they like it, and we immediately wash it off, the first thing they try to do is go find something horrific to roll in, and recapture the moment.

Nothing has a greater desire to stink than a freshly laundered pooch.

I think it’s hatred of the nice clean scents we choose for doggie shampoo. “You want me to smell like a wuss??”

You should smell the flea/tick shampoo I have for the dogs…they’re quite pleased with it. Smells almost as bad as when my first hound rolled around on a dead sting ray at the beach…

I have never given Buddy a bath. He’s a labrador. He did get completely covered in beach sand once. I hosed him off in the yard. His coat is as shiny today as it was when he was a pup. But, he’s never gotten into anything petroleum so I’ve never seen a need for soaps. A labs skin/hair oil is just that good. And as for smell, i do give him a good sniff on occasion. Just to be cretan he hasn’t developed a skin issue. Ive done that with my and mom & pops dogs. I started that with pops first schnauzer. She had skin issues, and his boy later had ear problems. Sniff your pets people!

Sebastião Salgado – Serra Pelada gold mine in Brazil.

Working conditions look somewhat less than optimal.

But can you guess the year the photo was taken?

Well….
before I peek…

I’ll try…
That sounds like a trick question… it looks quite primitive, but it’s going to be either way older or way newer than we think. If it were 1934, I don’t think you’d ask (so with my luck it will be .)

But no… they’re wearing t-shirts so it’s not 1934, and certainly not 1894… so I’ll go another hundred years… 1994? Maybe even 2004? No reason for the four, just being random.

Final: okay…2004.

Mick Jagger and Keith Richards… it’s actually Richard… looking so angelic, even though they really weren’t… but just so young, in 1966.

I can’t believe that was almost 60 years ago. Okay, yeah… “only” 59.

They had to be …(Trying to do arithmetic at midnight)… 22 and 21 years old, cos Mick is 82 now, and Keith 81…

And they’re still touring, and making music, and still the Rolling Stones!

I keep forgetting to ask… I’m having trouble with GoComics so I can’t get to my strips to check for people. That’ll get fixed when I reset my password for the 73rd time…

But meanwhile… Has anybody seen Marge? She was coming here pretty regularly but it’s been a long time.

If you see her, ask her to come back!

EVERYONE is having trouble with GoComics.

I had the opportunity to look up Marge’s last comment over there, her last comment was about 4 weeks ago.

She also runs the “Ten Cats Friends from GoComics”, but hasn’t posted anything since Aug 24, not that it is a very active FB page nowadays.

I grabbed her email address that she had posted in her GC profile if you wish to contact her.
