In the hopes this will stay up when nighthawks comes back from that halcyon day of yore, I’ll post anyway.

You’ve done funnier and less funny, IMHO .. but this one was funny enough.
As for “cute”….
A. “Cute” doesn’t necessarily mean “Cute and nothing else” or “Cute therefore insignificant.”
Which is to say…. It doesn’t imply absence of any other attributes.
B. One cute strip doesn’t mean your entire oeuvre is cute and only cute.
C. Not every cartoon has to rival the “Divine Comedy” or “King Lear” for weightiness.
And D. Even on frivolous “cute” days… you can remind yourself that the Japanese, especially, hold “cute” in high esteem.
Sanrio, publishers and manufacturers of all things “Hello Kitty” and many other popular characters, make about a kajillion dollars every minute through worldwide sales of “Cuteness.”
So I just have to wonder a bit about this thing with “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”. Will we see more of it? Will it appear more and more often? Does this have anything to do with the “rumors” of Nighthawks being abducted, then showing up at odd times, apparently unaware of what day it is? Will Cleo start sculpting in mashed potatoes?
Theoretically, an arrow with no drag could go around the world and strike from the opposite direction. Comics world is much smaller, so the circumnavigation occurs in the time-space between two panels!
And this is the second time Claude has not restrained himself to a simple “Confound it, Cleo.” This does not bode well.
I once read a science fiction short story that made liberal use of cartoon physics, and geology too, come to think of it.
Title and author have both long since passed from memory, but in it, the visiting earth-man was warned out of the way of a small moon that was orbiting the planet at an altitude that would have had that moon going right through him.
As I said, liberal use of cartoon physics, but it was a fun story.

What a day. First off the power went off, then my computer died and had to go to the computer hospital. Then we find out it’ll be gone until Tues. so i’ll be Using MMM’s iPad. What a bummer.

Susan is here; so all is well.
The arrow heard ’round the world!
..
I remember years ago, on another strip, someone commenting that an arrow in the comic went in an impossible direction.
I said that one of the basic tenets of cartoon physics, (a field which btw I thought I was making up, but I wasn’t)…
Was that a cartoon arrow will always fly in the direction that is funniest.
…
The principle still holds true!
that proverbial arrow WILL fly in the direction that is funniest…..just not so much in today’s offering.
to sum it up, Stel labeled the latest animation as CUTE….
‘Cute’ can be forgiven occasionally, but if ‘cute’ is ALL I can come up with, then it’s
time to hang it up
