This is Tokyo’s Pantheon Theater… with its several-story marquee poster…
for
John Wayne, in “The Alamo”, in 1960
Yeah yeah, I spoiler-boxed the title when it’s right out there on the sign.
I’m a creature of habit.
Sue me.
Seems an appropriate place to spot a huge (for Japan) American car, as well. A Japanese friend, back in the 1970s, told me they were a rare sight in the 1940s.
Her American GI husband got one somehow, though an early 40s one, not a 57-ish model, and she said they were stared at everywhere. Not sure about by 1960.
Back in the 70s I was attending a church that was building a new auditorium. There was a large balcony involved. One of the pastors told me he’d never sit up there, because he was in the crew that built it. Seeing this dock, I wonder if it was some of his work 🙂
I searched this image… A number of sites said this was a woman in roller skates advertising Black Cat, or the Black Cat, but gave no indication of what that product might be.
A couple of others seemed to solve the mystery, saying it’s a photo for The Black Cat. Magazine, published from 1895 to 1922. This ad would be from the earlier part of that.
It made sense, as such ads were common, and this fits the period… But I’ve realized that the cat face and title font are not the same as the magazine’s. Also, I can’t quite make out what it says in the dark rectangle below the cat, but it kind of looks like an English price, maybe.
And is that a shoe in between?
Anyway, here’s a sample cover of the magazine, and you can actually read an issue here:
Back in the early 1980’s when I was living in London and working in Enfield, part of my area was Brimsdown. In Brimsdown there was a café that we used to frequent when we were working around there, it was situated by a railway level crossing and it was named ‘The Black Cat’. The entrance to the café was down a couple of steps, and there was a sign above the door which read:
“English Spoken Here. Please mind the Bloody Step!”
My mom took me downtown to see that grand sci-fi film in1954 when it came out….. I never forgot the experience. in color and on big screen with scary Martians and popcorn. Six year old me was truly impressed
Well, yeah…. They’re obviously not going to have an actor really drinking liquor for a movie. Could be cola or just brown water, as a prop.
But in the scene (from Animal House) John Belushi is supposed to be chugging a bottle of liquor… that bottle is quite familiar here…. It’s Jack Daniels Whiskey.
Searching for Jelly Belly flavors, I ran across some very weird ones. Don’t serve these to your friends. The MRE packs infantry edition is probably a joke.
1. The little boy with a hot air balloon on a string… Unless that’s a hot air balloon shaped kite.
2. The fire extinguisher in the fountain.
3. The creepy way the artist’s hand disappears.
4. Smoke from the birdhouse chimney… Though maybe the birds enjoy having a cozy fireplace.
5. Either it’s that there’s a teapot shadow in the path, or that it has two spouts. Or both.
And possibilities
for the sixth…
1) The woman is running holding a phone in her hand, which disrupts her stride.
2) She’s looking at her phone instead of where she’s going.
3) She’s about to crash into that easel.
4) there’s something weird on her left ankle but I don’t know what it is.
5) I missed something.
I think I know. There are many things “wrong” with the drawing, but IMO the easel is not one of them. Shadows on the ground and coloring of the wood confirm it is a tripod with two legs in front and one centered in back. What might appear to be a fourth leg is a vertical support for the canvas which extends from the very top of the easel to the horizontal crossbar between the front legs.
Yep – that’s exactly what it is. In the back, near the top of the canvas, would be a hinge for the back leg of the tripod configuration, connecting the front assembly to the support leg.
What about the row of stones lining the walkway – there a nice straight single line, except for one spot that has an extra stone (just below the seated lady’s feet.)
We have lots on older pages, that show up after everybody stops posting… Not usually on active pages, but there’s nothing stopping them.
I don’t recommend clicking unidentified links from unidentified people. They can lead to malware.
I’ve known several people who got computer worms or viruses that way… And one was a usually cautious, very techie person, who used to comment here. He just wasn’t paying attention one day, and his email got compromised. Dont worry… It wasn’t from something on this site… But it can happen here.
Links can even be dangerous from people we know, if malware on their computers gets access to their and sites… That’s why I used to keep asking people to post a few words if they post a link, to show it’s them, on purpose, and not a bot.
Most people don’t listen, so I gave up… I don’t want to nag, or be “that guy”. But I often skip links I can’t identify.
…..
Camille, no offense…. But if you are a real person please post some words and describe the link.
Yes, there’s no one with that name in the subscriber list……I have to purge 15-20 phony ‘guests ‘every day from it…..easy to pick out, the all are like this phony Camille…..I’m deleting it now
.
There, you see?
Impatiently rolling her(?) eyes, but her nails are too short to drum on the table.
As I tried to point out the other day, that just wouldn’t do for Ms Cleo.
..
…
Looks like someone lost a fake nail.
Until it starts crawling towards me and I scream.
Just a little.
I can outrun a cockroach. I save my screams for wasps and other flying menaces.
Sorry… no.
Blue doesn’t automatically confer ungrossity.
I’m sure there are some gross blue things.
You also have to define “gross”. I mean, blue gummy candy is gross, but not the “run away right now” type of gross.

Boy! Did I ever worship that guy!!!

My attorney will be in touch with your attorney
Bring it on!
But what is that strange contraption the cyclist has on his shoulder?
Food.
Okay – early Door Dash worker!
..,
“Oh shit!”
Glub, glub!

Guess they needed a load limit sign on that dock
…,
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s grandmother?
Wow, the things you learn on the Internet.

I think I just tracked it down!
But I had to do my own digging.
I said that looked like an English price tag… So I googled Black Cat UK brand…. Dug through a lot of incorrect results….
But look!
“By Jove, I think she’s got it!”
I just realized she’s got cigarettes hanging from her hair and her sleeves, and packs of them on her shoulders, and in the strap for her sign.
LOL

All sand traps are evil nefarious creatures. This one just shows his true self more openly than most.

Both photos show working on props from War of the Worlds.

He’s dead now, isn’t he?
Do not try this at home.
Heck… Do not try it anywhere.
Looks like Cola to me.

Same here.
I prefer Jamesons.
Or tea?
Too bubbly.
If it was carbonated and in that amount, I’d probably burp myself to death.

Another of Lewis Hine’s photographs for the National Child Labor Committee, which were instrumental in the passage of U.S. child labor laws.
Some boys as young as ten worked the night shift, so they could go to school, and wouldn’t run afoul of new laws against truancy.
But you can imagine how well they were doing in school, being up all night… That is, when they actually made it there.

Kinda copying the Harry Potter ones.
They come in flavors like snot.

Define “mistake…”
Yup.
I think so.
Does that include the one about to happen?
I was wondering that too.
I see
Or both.

3) She’s about to crash into that easel.
4) there’s something weird on her left ankle but I don’t know what it is.
5) I missed something.
I saw that but i decided that it was probably just bad drawing….

Yeah…. I was coming back to say I realized the same thing, looking at it again this morning.
There doesn’t seem to be any “flower” color there. I was thinking it was a squirrel or an owl setting in the void.
To me, as well, it was an owl.
I didn’t think to question it… I can see his big eyes…
But of course, maybe it’s not an owl…
I don’t know what the light-colored band is, that goes across below the eyes. Maybe it’s a flower pot.
It’s so vaguely drawn it could be a squirrel or a pot of flowers… or who knows what.
The fact that I do all this on an 8″ tablet doesn’t help either!
Looks like the sort of AI Slop that is produced these days and passed off as ‘Real’. So, no, there’s no mistakes in the picture…….. 😉
Probably not, but it’s a thought 😉
What about the row of stones lining the walkway – there a nice straight single line, except for one spot that has an extra stone (just below the seated lady’s feet.)
.
Watch out. This may be an ad.
Might also be a phishing link, or contain malware. Can’t tell from the disguised URL.
Most probably a malware BOT, a similar link has appeared at the bottom of yesterdays strip, different ‘user’ but a similar shortened link!!!
Beware people!!!
Or worse.
You posted this while I was typing mine… But yeah, same thought.
Caution required.
You guys this could be a spam post from a bot.
Please don’t click on it!

The hoops you have to jump through to keep this going!!! Thanks nighthawks!
Plus, you’re running the Tiki Bar in your spare time. What a guy!
just a silent partner.
I’m in it for the free drinks
Don’t think there’s any need to spoiler his identity.

James Cagney, Photographed by Edward Weston (1933).
Purple Sandpiper.
I don’t think he’s purple!
Maybe he pipes purple sand?
I googled it. The purple comes from a shine rarely seen on some of the wing feathers!
I figured it was because some biologists don’t know their colors very well. Lots of “purple” things are really red or something similar.
If it eats people, then from here it looks like a “One eyed, one horn, flying, purple people eater….”
One eye?
An extra for Wednesday, just because.
Cute then, cute now.
The days are going by fast these days
Let me off! I think I’m gonna hurl…
