Keystone Cops, or a Buster Keaton film?

Good guesses… It’s the former.

Keystone Kops – a stunt for the 1914 ‘Kops’ …
filmed on the Santa Monica Palisades.

“Right of Way’ by John Harrison.
It was in the running for a prize in a recent Australian photo contest.

A group of royal penguins draws the ire of an elephant seal, as they walk past him to the shoreline.

Yeah, he says they changed course. I was kinda hoping they stood their ground, but I guess the seal is a lot bigger.

I still do it… thankfully not as much as a few years ago.

But it’s 1am right now!

OMG… I suppose this is only funny to older boomers and the previous cohort, if they ran in certain (some would say “the wrong”) circles, in the mid to late sixties.

But I can imagine this photo being sold to them on a poster, as a joke.

I’m sure Owsley Drugs in Billings isn’t even actually related to the humor… it’s just a funny coincidence.

During that time, Owsley Stanley, sound engineer for the Grateful Dead, was also known as the Acid King. Acid, aka LSD, was still legal, and he produced millions of doses. He was arrested numerous times after it became illegal, but carried on for a number of years… I don’t know how long.

He provided the LSD for the Dead, for Ken Kesey’s acid test, and the cream of the crop of what was sold on the street. Saying “it’s real Owsley” was bragging… sometimes a lie, I’m sure… but it meant quality.

His first name, not his last, was Owsley, and his family had nothing to do with drugstores or Montana. But he was very famous for drugs… mostly, but not only, LSD, so I laughed at this photo.

Did I take that stuff? No.

How do I know all this, then?
Hey, I was there.

Another from Elliott Erwitt’s “Dogs”… early 1970s, NYC

I had them on note cards, but I think there was a book, too.

Maybe I’m missing something

But…
I don’t see why anyone would see more or less than seven.

There are seven circles drawn, any conjunction of two hemispheres where different circles overlap creates an ellipse, not another circle.

You can count them in the reverse direction, and your perspective seems to change, but they’re the same circles… there are no new ones. Still seven.

Anybody?

Yes.
But the definition of ellipse is a different one.

There are many definitions, depending on where you look. Usually they don’t have points, but in a casual sense, that’s the best word for that shape, and I’ve seen it used.

We’re not all mathematicians here.

Do you see the tube they form from right to left, left to right, or can you see both ways?

Both ways. But that’s what I meant about it not changing the number of circles.

One could say there are an infinite number of them, as you move along the tube… But there are only certain ones drawn.

Yes, I nearly fell into the trap of counting them both ways.

I know Nighthawks does the celebrity picture-guessing gig… but I can’t resist posting this.

Hope you don’t mind, Nighthawks.

I just ran into this picture tonight… I was looking at a news story, and this was a link at the bottom of the page… one of those teaser pics, where they try to get you to look at pages and pages of celebrity images, with a billion ads. I usually don’t.

The things is, I saw this baby, and for some reason, I thought I knew who he’d grow up to be…. so I had to look, and I can’t believe it, but I was right. I almost never recognize a baby!

And he doesn’t even look like the grownup… I don’t know what I saw in his face…

There just something recognizable about his face.

Of course it’s all for show. A regular electric clock with steam coming out. (I think it does whistle, though)

I recall seeing this when we went with some friends to Victoria and Vancouver from Seattle. Fun trip, but the ferry crossing was pretty choppy.

It’s so easy to get them confused with a House Finch.
