They’re so pretty… I’m sad to hear that they’re invasive and unwanted. 🙁
I just read that they also inflict very painful stings, injecting strong venom with their spines … though they’re not poisonous, and can be safely eaten once the spines are removed.
They’re not caught commercially, and hunters like in the video don’t sell them for food, because there are so many, and it’s labor-intensive, and a bit dangerous, to remove the spines and clean them.
Apparently, they’re a big problem in Florida… they come from SE Asia, so the usual Atlantic predators, like sharks, don’t recognize them as edible.
The photo is named for its location, the famed Left Bank cafe in Paris, nearly 150 years old now, though maybe only 100 when this was taken.
For many years it was a literary and artistic hangout for the likes of Sartre, Hemingway and Picasso, and many more, where intellectuals argued philosophy… a place I always wanted to go.
Too late, I suppose, cos I’ll never get to Paris, and it’s more of a tourist trap now anyway.
It’s nice that the doggie got his aperitif, and left a tip.
Margaret Bourke-White was one of the premier American photographers of the Great Depression, WWII, and the Korean War.
In the late 1920s and early 30s, she mostly did commercial photography of buildings and construction… She was hired by Fortune magazine to document the work on the Chrysler building.
When she heard there would be gargoyles on the 61st floor, she insisted on having an office there. She took many pictures from that floor, often climbing on ledges… and gave “her” two closest gargoyles nicknames. One of her 1931 photos of a gargoyle… not with her on it… recently sold for $90,000.
During the depression, her photos of Southern sharecroppers were made into a popular book.
She became the first female war correspondent, first.woman allowed to work in combat zones, and the only American photographer to witness and take pictures of the German bombing of Moscow.
It was the time of evening a few weeks back when the road was dark, but the headlights weren’t doing well either and I saw a skunk about that far ahead of me while I was doing about 35.
I hit the brakes HARD and luckily missed it. I saw it go scampering off into a field tail held high and escaped without having my car sprayed.
The Royal Guard also used to play Abba songs for Queen Elizabeth, who reportedly once said she often danced when she heard “Dancing Queen”, “because I’m a queen and I like to dance.”
