On the left is Lillie Robertson, a young spinner in the Century Cotton Mills, of South Boston, Virginia, in Jan 1911. …. Another in his series exposing child labor, from photographer Lewis Hine.
The notes on the photo say that she says she is 14, (the legal age for quitting school to work,) but he thinks she’s younger. Her 10 year old sister, Mamie, on the right, helps her and watches the littlest one.
“Baby doesn’t work yet. Father works in wagon factory. Cotton Mills work is slack.”
I would suggest that photo was staged or more likely photo-shopped.This goes beyond artful cropping .Every element in this picture is just too perfectly placed to be coincidental . The flaring out of that shoulder protection, to that wisp coming out of the top of his hat are just too perfectly arranged and the guy wearing black suede Wallabees didn’t help either.
I’m sure the photo was posed, if that’s what you mean, but photoshopped, or otherwise faked… I don’t really think so.
I searched it, and discovered other pictures… Even a little video of him fishing, that was on a site (threads.com) that wouldn’t let me link or download it to post here.
A couple of sites said that while cormorant fishing was once the livelihood of this whole area, it’s a dying art, and nowadays mostly done as a tourist attraction. That might explain his nice shoes. After all, he’s 86.
Dutch exotic dancer Mata Hari (Margaretha Geertruida Zelle) on a cigarette card from a package of Cigarettes Melia, made in Algiers, Algeria (circa 1905–1910).
She’s posing on an Oriental carpet in one of her elaborate “Orientalist “costumes, with its ornate headpieces and jewelry.
Mata Hari was, tragically, executed in 1917 as a suspected World War I spy, but her guilt was never actually proven.
This two-story mural of author and Merry Prankster Ken Kesey was created in 2015 in his hometown of Springfield, OR. It was designed by Portland artist Craig Ferroggiaro and painted by the Old City Artists based out of Los Angeles.

None of them look over ten years old!
Probably malnourished.
And none of them go to school.

Cormorant fishing was a common documentary subject in the fifties and sixties…

Quite the big deal around here.
I never knew he was so tall!
He didn’t have to fly over the cuckoo’s nest, he could have just stepped over it
Bunnies, for Bunday.
Green Woodpecker, Often seen foraging on the ground, breaking into anthills, or feeding on other insects.
