This is Iris Apfel, a rather surprising fashion icon…

With her husband, Carl, she ran a textile business for decades, where she not only designed textiles, they collected, reproduced and emulated antique and international fabrics. She had a contract with the White House through nine presidencies for replacing or adding historical upholstery fabrics.

She also designed clothing, and was a well known fixture at designer fashion shows. She was the subject of a documentary film, and had prestigious museum shows of her costume jewelry collection, then launched a collection of her own designs at 94.

At the age of 97, she signed with an international agency as a model, so she would have representation for all the modeling offers that came her way .

She passed away in 2024, at 102.

Which is, by the way, gone now. All cut down. I think they raise cows and grow potatoes there now or something.

Canadian strongman and weightlifter Louis Cyr, with his wife and daughter, taken around 1885… sources differ..

He was advertised in the late 19th century as the strongest man in the world, bested all challengers in Canada, the US, and England, and is still believed by many to actually be the strongest man who ever lived.

At about 19 years old, he pulled a stuck wagon out of the mud, and went on to a career as a performer, on his own, later with Barnum and Bailey, and eventually owning his own circus.

He lifted a 500 pound boulder with one finger, bench pressed over 350 pounds with one arm, and most impressively, lifted a platform on his back with 18 full grown men on it. The total weight of men and platform was over 1400 pounds

Susan,

18 full grown men weighed only 1400 pounds? That’s only 77.7 pounds each, without the weight of the platform.

I found this number – lifting a platform on his back holding 18 men for a total of 4,336-pound (1,967 kg) – which seems much more reasonable.

The other numbers, amazingly, seem to be correct.

Yes, it was a late night typo. It was supposed to say over 4,000 pounds.

Obviously 18 men would weigh more than 1400 pounds!

I’m not sure which you’re “amazed” that the other numbers are correct… I don’t just make them up; I quote sources!

I didn’t quote the exact figure for the last one because there’s controversy…

According to reports at the time, the platform weighed 500 pounds… subtracting that, and dividing by 18, meant the men averaged 213 pounds, but some observers said they didn’t believe they were that big.

So some accounts said 4,000 pounds, just to make the men under 200 pounds apiece, and I was going with that, or trying to, anyway.

I must ask…. can a whale be pink??

Cos I think I found it… but of course, the whole picture is pink, so it’s not a spoiler to say that the sea creature I found is also pink.

So… if you want to see the pink whale….

It’s hard to see, even if you know what it looks like. It might be hard to see even in my “circle”.

I found it looking at the image above, then downloaded it so I could mark it… and temporarily lost it, and had to find it again.

So I’m including a little hint, for when you’re looking at the image without my circle: imagine a line pointing downward from the space between “Find” and “the”. A short way down, it will run into some.little dots, or freckles. Those are on the whale’s back.

I’m glad somebody else saw it!

I was starting to wonder whether it was like the Snuffleupagus, and I was the only one.

Some yes, some silly.

Somebody tell me how you can, as it says in #8, save pasta water, which is the water you drain from the cooked pasta… and add a splash before draining the pasta.

#2. Salt pasta water like the sea – to season the pasta from the inside out. Umm, the salty water is outside the pasta…
