There are at least four versions of Sam Spade.
Dashiell Hammett’s, from his 1930 novel, the Ricardo Cortez version as directed by Roy Del Ruth in 1931, Humphrey Bogart’s version as directed by John Huston in 1941, and the radio show version played first by Howard Duff and later by Steve Dunne from scripts written by scriptwriter Bob Tallman (for which he received an Edgar Award for Best Radio Drama) from 1946-1951. The Hammett and Bogart versions are hard boiled, of course, but the Cortez/Duff/Dunne versions are a little more light hearted.
I managed to find the first filming by Cortez and Del Ruth online; it’s at this LINK. This link unlike most, is really easy to use, click on it and you’re there.
The opening panorama shot of San Francisco is eye opening.
I tried to enlarge this poster (up above), but it didn’t come out as clear as I had hoped it would. If it’s glittered, it’s a GIF. Every time an image is glittered, the site shrinks it. I had found another site that would resize it back to its original size, but that site no longer is working. So, tonight I found yet another site, but the results were less than satisfying.
Anyway, here is the smaller version of the poster….a bit clearer but too small for my liking. I’ll continue to search the internet (but, not tonight! It’s late and I’ve already spent way too long on this). In this day and age, there’s got to be something better.
Kind of you to say, PC ! Nighthawks and I always wonder if the features are large enough and clear enough for everyone to see alright. Sometimes the programs just don’t want to cooperate.
Me, being me, I went looking.
I don’t know if the site will match up to what you want, but I took your original poster under StelBel’s Stuff and blew it up to twice its size. The quality held up reasonably well I thought (see the attachment).
I found the site easy to use (simple drag and drop with clear option boxes below once you’ve done that).
I left it as a U.R.L. for easy copying and storing, if you decide you want to.
I’d like to say I had that intention….I really would! But, truth be told, I happened to be looking through a bunch of 80’s hits, and the 3 that I chose were very popular in Spain when I lived there back in ’87-’88. They brought back so many memories….
I’m surprised no one has asked any questions about this one….
since these aren’t the basset stars you may have expected to see, in the roles of Sam Basset and Miss Behave.
We’ve watched 4 episodes so far of a more famous version, and Thursday, we saw a poster for a different human one.
…
“The Maltese Basset” is based on a wonderful (IMHO) short novel by Dash-Heel Basset… who only wrote 5 novels in his life…
They were all gems of dogtective writing…. including his probably most famous… “The Thin Dog.”
He also wrote the “Great Dane Curse”, and the “Red Setter Harvest.”
…
But critics seem to think The Maltese Basset was his best work.
Tonight’s poster is from the first film made from that book., in 1931.
It never achieved quite the fame of the 1941 version, with which we’re more familiar…
even though it starred the lovely Bebe Spaniels… and, as a “pre-Code” production, it was quite a bit racier than the later film.
The problem is, they say it also wasn’t quite as good.. though I still want to see the whole thing.
It’s rarely shown… if this poster means it’s in town, I have to see it.
…
The humans did think well enough of it to copy it… those copydogs.
That’s the version in Stel’s first comment, and the first to feature a falcon instead of a basset.
It’s also in the clip that she posted… and its star, Bebe Daniels, is featured on that gorgeous 1920’s film magazine cover.
…
Both the basset and human films were so racy, they were not allowed to be re-released once the Motion Picture Code was in place….
So a second human version, which they recast as a rather unfunny comedy, of all things, was released in 1936.
It’s leading lady, later in her now-famous career, wanted nothing to do with it.
…
So a second basset version was made, in 1941… that’s the most famous one, which we’ve been watching so avidly.
The humans also copied that one with their third “bird” version… “the Maltese Falcon”… which you may have seen, starring human actors Humphrey Bogart and Mary Astor.
…
And finally, they made the version of “The Maltese Basset” featured in Stel’s poster last Thursday….
with those same human actors and Stel’s lovely basset statuette, in Cleo Clifford’s likeness.
….
So… I believe that makes two all basset versions, and four with human actors… including three with a bird and one with a basset statuette…
and I’ve seen them all!
You’d think I’d be sick of it…. but it’s so good, I still see it whenever I can…
and as I said… if this older version is playing now… let’s go!

Anyways, LOVE the poster!

Thank you for what you do!
As far as i’m concerned, you do magic as it is. 🙂
Thank you so much for saying that, happy!! I appreciate it so much!
It doesn’t matter one bit how large it is. It’s still grand in my book!
Such a loving couple. Sigh.
I dunno whether I’d call Sam Basset and Miss Behave exactly loving…. but they’re fun to follow.
Watch the little clip Stel posted of their human counterparts, since we can’t seem to get our hands on basset clips.
Kind of you to say, PC ! Nighthawks and I always wonder if the features are large enough and clear enough for everyone to see alright. Sometimes the programs just don’t want to cooperate.
Thanks.
It looks fine in both sizes.
Thanks to you as well, Susan!!…..just wanted to make sure everyone could see it OK.
All your work is great, Candi! (And Nighthawks too!)
Can’t say it enough!
Me, being me, I went looking.

Thanks for your effort! It looks like I may be able to work with that site. I need to experiment more, but so far, so good.
I don’t know if this is why you chose it, Stel…
But some of the lyrics to this song kinda suit Sam Basset… right before he sends Miss Behave up the river…
(if he were a little less hard-boiled, and actually ever thought about emotion… LOL)
…
I had to go find them…
“But I’ve got to think twice
Before I give my heart away
And I know all the games you play
Because I play them too
Oh but I need some time off from that emotion
Time to pick my heart up off the floor
Oh when that love comes down
Without devotion
Well it takes a strong man baby
But I’m showing you the door.”
I’d like to say I had that intention….I really would! But, truth be told, I happened to be looking through a bunch of 80’s hits, and the 3 that I chose were very popular in Spain when I lived there back in ’87-’88. They brought back so many memories….
It was just happenstance.
He got me!!!
Cute!.
You can’t beat a winking giraffe for cuteness, huh?
Missed it till Montana Lady clued me in! Hahahahahaha!
Almost but not quite a Rick-roll… except a different song, and you can see where you’re going.
…
I saw Rick Astley once on YouTube, in an interview where he was asked whether he was embarrassed by Rick-rolling.
He good naturedly said no… and that it had greatly increased his fame, and even the sales of that record.
Wow… a rare poster, for tonight!

BTW.. I responed to several people fairly late yesterday…
No problem for me – I always check yesterday first.
Me too…
and often the day before.
Sometimes more, if something from a couple of days ago has still been accumulating comments.
So! Ya got that, everybody??? Susan will be giving a quiz at the end of the week, so study hard, buck-os!!
(Seriously, again, thank you, Susan, for all the careful research that you do on our behalf! I, for one, am very appreciative!!)
Baked Alaska
Why don’t we ever see baked Minnesota, say, or Kansas?
Does baked Florida taste more steamed than baked California?
(I know some people think California is only half-baked, but it’s not. In fact some parts are over- baked, but it just adds extra texture.)
Should we be trying baked Louisiana, or Tennessee, or Arizona?
Or is Alaska the only state that tastes good?
The fact that it’s frozen makes it more interesting, I know.
You pose some interesting points to ponder, Susan! I will give it some thought!
I’m not fooled. When you cut Alaska into cross sections, it does not look like that.
But it’s so hard to keep a baked Florida frozen. Much easier in Alaska where the oven stays frozen throughout the cooking…
dark chocolate
That’s the best kind of chocolate. The real flavor shines through.
Agreed!
.
That’s a whale of a mouse.
Moby Mouse!

Thank you! Likewise!
Well – to be honest: I’m Ox. But my husband is Tiger.
Dog here. Kinda fits. 🙂
I’m a dog too.
I had to look it up, but turns out I’m a Rooster (I missed Dog by <1 month).
Missed Tiger by a week! I’m an Ox too…
I got logged out again! If you see an angry, square purple head ~ that’s me! I don’t have time to deal with it this morning. Any ideas on how to stay logged in??
Anyways, LOVE the poster!
I tend to last only eight to ten days myself.
I get 2 days, maybe a 3rd day if I’m lucky, depending on the time of day when I initially signed in…
I don’t feel so bad then. It is just irritating.
I have to log back in almost every day! It’s crazy.
