I rarely understand Berkeley Breathed’s sense of humour. Like Gahan Wilson’s it’s somewhere I can’t reach for the most part.
Take this.
Is the mouse “merely” licking blood from an existing wound, or did the mouse make the wound? I don’t see the humour; but other’s must because he’s been around for a while.

Excuse me, but… um… say what??

I couldn’t figure out what in the world you were referring to, with that horrid imagery…

Berke Breathed is a gentle humorist, sometimes twisted…

but he does does NOT make paintings of mice licking blood.

Especially not off of sweet, innocent Rosebud, the last Basselope, pictured cuddled up on a tree branch with some furry friends, trying to get a night’s sleep.

Yikes!

Then I got it… I hope.

Are you referring to the little mouse in the crook of Rosebud’s rear leg?

He’s on his back, not even facing Rosebud… trying to sleep in her warmth…. and using a big red flower for a pillow.

Unless I’m mistaken about where you’re looking, you’re taking flower petals for blood!

The resolution in this image isn’t great…. but I coincidentally happen to have a better copy saved on my computer.

Here’s a crop of the mouse and his flower pillow.

comment image

Meanwhile, Rosebud has a hedgehog sleeping on her back and one standing on her head. A snail near her front right armpit.

Another red bloom and two scraggly white flowers are clutched in her preternaturally long tail, along with a banana… maybe for breakfast… as she wraps it around the branch for stability.

Gentle humor that doesn’t align with bloodthirsty mice.

I do have to admit that she’s comically leery of some hovering, pointy-beaked hummingbirds, so she’s keeping a wary eye open.

….

Hope you feel better about the picture now!

Thank you, and Thank you. ! !

Now that I’ve seen the sleeping mouse, my day is a fair bit brighter. I can now really appreciate the surrealism of Breathed’s artwork; and yes, there is indeed a “don’t-even-think–about-what-you’re-thinking-about” look in Rosebud’s eye but I no longer interpret it as sinister; but rather playful. I’m reasonably sure the tree branch goes through metamorphosis from tree branch to duck’s head (end of thank-you one).
The second thank-you is for your answer to my question about Postimage below. I think I’ll take a chance with the site and see if it will do what I want to do with it (I corrected the spelling typographical error just before posting this).

P.S.:

Is the world ready for a basset president of the United States?
After all, your president’s actions do affect the rest of the world, and a president who advocates sleeping all day would definitely have a deleterious effect on the world’s economy.

Also if she happens to be female would American television always have to bleep out the proper form of address?

” Thank you (bleep) President, for that address to the United Nations.”

Gosh… You’re quite welcome! Glad to hear I could help in any way to promote well-being, and let you enjoy the picture.

I didn’t notice any error in your other comment… Now that you’ve corrected it, I guess I won’t.

I made a typo, myself, in my comment below about Three Dog Night… But I thought it was funny, so I’m letting it stand, with finding it as a puzzle… Not that anyone will be the least bit interested.

And YES!- I think a few long naps by world leaders would greatly improve the political situation all over the globe.

Covid and climate change, fires and earthquakes, and all sorts of uncontrollable factors have made EVERYBODY grouchy and jumpy…

Heads of government and diplomats are not exempt.

On top of that, they meet and negotiate in a state of extreme jet lag…

getting off planes, after flying for hours, through multiple time zones…

and jumping straight into delicate speeches and confrontations, all in the public eye.

A few hours sleep, then maybe joining the others for a nice cup of tea and a biscuit or three before serious discussion… it would make a world of difference!

The butterflies are holding her ears up so she can her the soothing humming of the hummingbirds. I guess the squirrel is holding her eyelid open so she can keep that wary eye open watching the hummingbirds.

Um… I love your theory…

The only problem is that those blue things are her antlers, not her ears.

She’s a basselope… believed to be the last of her kind… which means there’s antelope mixed into her lineage, and she has beautiful antlers.

Meanwhile, one of her ears is lying flat… well, almost flat… along the branch, and the other is folded zigzag style between her right shoulder and her face.

Susan,

I’ve read some reviews of Postimage, but you are the only one I know who uses it regularly. Do you have an account?

The reviews and the site say you don’t need one, but I’m always leery of such claims without some trusted source backing that up.
I expect to have some pictures I’d like to post, but not at the expense of my privacy or wallet.

I use it all the time… I’m not a member.

The only difference I know is that members get a folder on the site, with their work stored in it, and can access past images.

Instead, I keep a text document into which I’ve pasted the links.

You don’t have to do either… but AFAIK, they remain viable indefinitely, so I save them for reuse.

At some point the site went down, and came back with a different domain, so I thought they were all gone…

but they posted instructions for changing a couple of letters in the image URL.

My links from years ago still work if I do.

Only super bulk users pay for membership… I mean with thousands or millions of stored images for commercial use.

The rest is free.

Be aware that you’re not promised privacy… I think the site can be searched for different types of images to post, including yours.

Since a lot of mine are from the web, anyway, how can I object.

Someone, somewhere, might be posting an old puzzle solution, but I doubt it.

Yawn…. I mean HI, Cleophiles…. and music lovers….

I was kinda … um… well… just sitting here….

I might have fallen asleep… you know… cos I was just resting my eyes… if the music hadn’t been so loud.

I mean, Three Dog Night! How could anybody sleep?

S’Ok, though… good music for a party.

Cleo’s bouncing around in the crowd!

Is that the nosh pit?

Nah… doesn’t look rough enough… but is she dancing on everybody’s shoulders?

That dog gets away with a LOT.

Not to mention… do Claude and Clara know she’s out?

She likes baby-boomer music?

I’d expect her to have Airedale Grande on her iDog…

Or be secretly drooling over Eddie Sheep-ran, or maybe Hairy Styles.

Then again, Claude and Clara are boomers, or probably a little older…

and Cleo probably doesn’t get out to many concerts without a leash.

And at least it’s not Brittany Spaniel Spears, or… ugh…

Justin Beagle.

….

Dang! Now I have an earworm….

do you remember this one?

….

“CLEOpatra was a basset…

She _was a good friend of mine

I never understood a single word she said

But I helped her drink her wine….

…. And she always had some mighty fine wine…. ♪ ♫ ♪ ♫

Singin’ Joy to the woofs!

All the pups and hounds, now…

Joy to the dogfish in the deep blue sea,

And JOY to you and me! ♪ ♫ ♪ ♫….

LOL… I just discovered that I made a typo in that comment…

I don’t know whether anybody noticed it…. probably not… but I was about to fix it, anyway, when I realized maybe Cleo influenced my incorrect word choice.

So I’m letting it stand, cos I accidentally invented something Cleo would visit at every concert she attended.

It’s maybe not quite a third of the way down. 🙂

I’m not fond of sweet potatoes, but like lima beans, some people must like them.

From: “The General Foods Kitchens Cookbook”
By: The women of General Foods Kitchens
Published by: Random House, Inc.
Library of Congress Catalog Card Number: 59 – 1084

“Apple and Sweet Potato Casserole”

1 can (2 lbs.) sweet potatoes sliced lengthwise*
2 cups sliced peeled apples, about 1/4 inch thick
3/4 cup maple-blended syrup
1/4 cup melted butter
1 teaspoon salt
* Or use about 4 cups sliced cooked sweet potatoes.

Place potato slices in a 12×8×2-
inch baking dish. Arrange apple slices
on top of potatoes. Combine syrup,
butter and salt; pour over potatoes
and apples. Cover and bake in a
moderate oven (350° F.) for 45 min-
utes. Remove cover and continue to
bake another 30 minutes, or until
apples are tender, basting frequently.
Makes 8 servings.
Casserole may be made ahead of
time and reheated. Add syrup, if
needed.

Notes from me:

As “General Foods” as a name has long disappeared into a corporate mish-mash, I’m relying on childhood memory that one of its products was a blended maple syrup. For better results, I’d use pure maple syrup.
The extra 30 minutes baking time might be a bit light. Apples in the oven take a good while to soften up even in liquid (particularly if you follow the basting instructions).
Canned sliced sweet potatoes are available, but I didn’t find any two pound cans on a quick search (it’s as easy to cook your own anyway).

Lima beans are good when cooked til tender (15-20 minutes), then mashed with butter and heavy cream. Add cayenne pepper to taste.
