Photograph featuring two Japanese acoustic locators mounted on 4-wheel carriages, taken in the 1930s
The Japanese war tuba (Known in Japanese as: 九〇式大空中聴音機, “Large air sound detector ninety formula”) is a colloquial name sometimes applied to Imperial Japanese Army acoustic locators due to the visual resemblance to the musical tuba. The name derived from a misidentification, possibly in jest, of a historical photo from the 1930s featuring the Japanese emperor Shōwa inspecting the acoustic locators with anti-aircraft guns in the background.
I was going to say that those tubas look as if they would have had to train sumo wrestlers to play them. Probably had some good carry to the sound, though.
This hapless boob of a door-to-door salesman who always shows up amazes me. You would think that at some point he would learn to avoid the house with the old guy and the wise-cracking dog, but no. I suspect that, if he shows up when only Clara is home, she will buy whatever it is. And that’s why he always returns. Mind you, this is all supposition. I have no knowledge of any of it, and I’m not going to go stake out the Cliffords in Cleveland to find out. That would be creepy.
My Boring Sunday bit: Starting weight: 184 lbs. / Goal weight: 145 lbs. / Weight lost to date: 3.6 lbs. (31.4 lbs. left)
Last week’s weight: 180.4 lbs. / Goal weight today: 178.9 lbs.)
I am now 178.2 lbs.
180.4 lbs. – 178.2 lbs. = 2.2 lbs.
31.4 lbs. – 2.2 lbs. = 29.2 lbs. (balance of desired loss to reach 145 lbs.)
29.296875 in³/lb. butter × 2.2 lbs. = 64.453125 in³ of me lost this week (972.65625 in³ of me to go)
178.2 lbs. – 1.5 lbs. = 176.7 lbs. (next Sunday’s goal weight)
Hey I exceeded my weight loss target!
This even though my Trikke riding is not going to plan; the weather didn’t start cooperating until Wednesday afternoon. I did find the two day break on Monday and Tuesday to be beneficial though. I could actually ride without strain on the level and the upgrades are a lot easier now.
I’ve added two more exercises to the regimen, and increased the “weight” of the existing ones. Here’s to 176.7 lbs. next Sunday.
I’m 145# and wouldn’t mind dropping another 5#. It’s not enough to motivate me to Alexikakos’s level. I’m very impressed, it takes a LOT of exercise to lose a pound.
I don’t know if any others here are Skin Horse fans, but I just confirmed what everyone has guessed, the strip is ending. Here is what Shaenon replied to my e-mail: “Yeah, we’re slowly nearing the end of Skin Horse. It’s run a lot longer than Jeff and I expected”
.
That’s a great one for the family album. Peas in a pod.
Two cuties.
agreed!
..
Wow! Must have been quite a sight to see while driving on the freeway.
If I didn’t know what it was, I’d be tempted to think it was photoshopped.
awesome shot!!
Wish I was there!
.
Smart dog!
Hey, it’s important to know how to use these things!
,.
Was this actually painted on a building somewhere? Or is the whole thing a painting? Easy to get lost in it.
It doesn’t look like the people at lower left are part of a painting…
I think they’re looking at a real building… or ignoring it, as the case may be.
The ones walking in front of it are painted on.
Nighthawks (I think) posted some other fantastically painted buildings here, probably a few months ago, that turned out to be in Brussels.
I wonder whether this one is too. Seems likely.
Nope:
Thanks… I was too sleepy to Google it.

Wigglebutts
Good thing these two are in synch.
The chewing gum walk.
Made me laugh!!

Clara would just sic Cleo on him – like requested by the latter several times.
Love the Dr Hook clip. Did they ever get there?
Yes. Yes they did. 🙂
Haha… You posted it just when I found it.
I guess I snooze, I lose.
They are very high up on the combined list of funky and really interesting animals.
I remember when those thingies were everywhere….
Fidget spinners, that’s what they were called.
The plain ones were about $5, then somebody came out with light-up ones.
I remember seeing a little girl down the street who had a fancy one, and other kids standing around, jealously watching her spin it.
….
Then, of course, they showed at discount places for less…. then the dollar store.
And the last ones I remember seeing had the name of a craft store printed on them… get one free with any purchase.
They spun off into well deserved obscurity… But I bet somebody got rich at first.
Well – since Nighthawks missed posting his appropriate artwork this year:
well, it was getting kinda stale…
I know I know, it never stopped me before!

145 seems kinda light-depending, of course, how tall you are—was that your weight before your gain?

Fidgets! yay
Good Sunday morning Cleo phans!
Y’all hug your farm animal....
I’m not hugging a farm animal! I don’t have any siblings to hug. My mouth would love to hug a cinnamon crescent, though.
that little girl would be good to hug since she’s playing with farm animals….
Her parents might not like it, though… I mean, unless you know them… . and she knows YOU.
I’m just going to put this here. (It’s one of those days.)
(R.I.P. beautiful soul)
I think I figured that out in my twenties: It is NEVER going to get easy, so quit looking for that.
Sorry…. who passed away?
Singer – Nightbirde in Feb – Just found out and it touched me. Don’t know why
i am soooooo grateful we live in the age of ‘on line’ vendors! no more door-to-door salesmen!
…just pesky telemarketers.
When I was little, our kid size hairbrushes were always samples from the Fuller Brush man.
I still carried one in my purse in high school… Really sturdy, well made, half round little brushes.
…
When you think about how little you actually spend on brushes of any kind, and what a small percentage they are of most stores’ inventory…
it’s amazing that there were men whose whole income depended on knocking on doors to get people to buy brushes.
They returned again and again, as well…
How often did people replace their brushes?
…
I remember my mom being talked into a special Fuller brush for washing dishes…
Then later, into replacing it with one that had a hollow handle, which you filled with that new-fangled liquid dish detergent.
There were tiny holes so it could seep into the brush head.
If you didn’t keep it standing head up, in a tall glass or a utensil holder, the soap all spilled out overnight.
I don’t know why Clio’s not on the cover of the Rolling Stone.
Have you ever heard Cleo singing?
I bet Jan Wenner has.
You wouldn’t put her on the cover either.

I’ll miss those wacky adventures.
Dang!
I was afraid of that with all the departures into the great unknown.
