A few of those farms are still within the families that settled them.
To this day, CP Rail controls its rights of way with an iron fist. If a road or power line has to cross even an abandoned rail line, it must meet the railroad’s standards for crossing, or no road, no powerline.
Another thing you will notice in prairie towns; if it is on the rail line, the main streets invariably parallel the railroad through town, and only if the town is big enough do the roads revert to grid.

Let alone the vast tracts of land (over 25 million acres) that was granted to the Company as government compensation in order to have the railway built…

Thank you, Alexi!

It wasn’t the least bit belated… the fact that Cleo strips for the following day come out about 9:30 or 10 pm “Nighthawks time” doesn’t make it the next day yet, in real life.

You posted 7 hours ago, or so it says above… 6:30 pm on the 16th here in California.

If that’s belated, most real life birthday greetings are belated…

but it doesn’t matter anyway, cos they’re never stale whenever they arrive!.

Here in California, it’s only 6:30pm Saturday… so it’s still mine.

So I’ll say thanks… though it makes me feel a bit guilty, cos I’ve had so much birthday already, on yesterday’s strip.

In fact, it’s still going on, if you’d like a sandwich or a piece of cake!

Not a very nice name for this attractive woman. Is that her brand?

I think that name was just assigned to the gif (the late inventor of the form says it’s pronounced jiff like the peanut butter’s name) that was made of her.
She is an accredited actress of French origin. The gif comes from below; it’s a portion of a U.S. Army training film from the year 1970.

Aha! Well then it is obvious (but they don’t look like feet to me).

I agree with you. The attachment is zoomed by a factor of 5.
Even at that level they can barely be discerned as feet.

I’m pretty sure I have them except number 12.

The crazy thing is, I could swear I had that one when I first looked at the puzzle…

but I got interrupted, and since I’ve come back I can’t remember it!

Only reason I’m mentioning it is… IF I had it, it couldn’t have been as impossible as it seems now.

My guesses
1) Sandbox

2) Man overboard

3) I understand

4) Reading between the lines

5) Long underwear

6) Crossroads

7) Downtown

8) Tricycle

9) Split level

10) Under 0 degrees

11) Neon lights

12)

13) High chair (?)

14) Paradise

15) Touchdown

16) 6 feet underground

17) Mind over matter

18) He’s beside himself

19) Backward glance

20) Life after death

You’re right, of course.

Silly me.

It was at the end of my party, after a long day… I think I was loopy.

The official answers, I only got part of 10, and 12 is a reach under any circumstances as far as I’m concerned.

In the original it’s hard to see the dots on the ‘i’s. I thought they were ones. I doubt I would have gotten it anyway.

The image given for #12 is different from what we see.

Those are lower case i’s… I guess ours are upper case but I just saw them as two short parallel lines. No way I’d read it as “eyes.”

My Boring Sunday bit:
Starting weight: 184 lbs.  /  Goal weight: 145 lbs. (-39 lbs.)  /  Weight lost to last week: 5.8 lbs. (33.2 lbs. left)

It’s a bit long this week, but for my own peace of mind I’m correcting the results of an uncaught drag-and-drop Word editing error I made.
This makes everything accurate up to and including today’s date (the weight loss figures were never in error, the derived figures were).

Volume of one pound of butter:
Length: 4.5″
Width: 2.625″
Depth: 2.625″
4.5 in. × 2.625 in. × 2.625 in. = 32.2998046875 in.3 / pound butter
32.2998046875 in.3 /lb. butter × 39 lbs. = 1,259.6923828125 in³ of me to lose.
Beginning weight of 184 lbs. – 5.8 pounds lost in total to April 10, = 178.2 lbs.
39 lbs. to lose – 5.8 lbs. lost = 33.2 lbs. to go.
32.2998046875 in³ /lb. butter × 5.8 lbs. lost= 187.3388671875 in³ of me lost.
1,259.6923828125 in³ of me to lose – 187.3388671875 in³ of me lost. = 1,072.353515625 in.3 of me to go.
There; I don’t know about you, but I feel better.

Last week’s weight: 178.2 lbs.  /  Goal weight today: 176.7lbs.)
I am now 177.8 lbs. lbs. (0.4 lbs. again. Is there a pattern forming here?)
178.2 lbs.  – 177.8 lbs. lbs.  =  0.4 lbs. lbs. 33.2 lbs.  –  0.4 lbs. lbs.  =  32.8 lbs (balance of desired loss to reach 145 lbs.)
32.2998046875 in³ /lb. butter  ×  0.4 lbs. lbs  =  12.919921875 in³ of me lost (1,059.43359375 in³ of me to go)
177.8 lbs. lbs.  –  1.5 lbs.  =  176.3 lbs.  (next Sunday’s goal weight)

Onward to this week’s drivel.
On Wednesday the 6th I went to Bianca Amor’s looking for a cheap pair of ear buds, I found them too, and at the till the current flyer was stuffed into my bag. When I got home I was just going to toss it when something on the front page caught my eye, it turned out to not be what I wanted as a “toy,” but I began leafing through the whole thing. It was a good thing I did. The store had hand grip exercisers advertised at $4.00. I didn’t rush out right then, Bianca Amor’s fliers rely heavily upon the “limited quanties–may-not-be-in-stock” type flyer clauses, but as I was passing by this past Monday I stopped in and there they were. Just below them for $2.00 was a step/calorie-counter (remember that fad from a few years back?). I figured why not? So for a total of $10.50 at the till (same flyer stuffed in) I got hand grips that work, and I’m getting some amusement keeping track of most of the steps taken outside of home; 16,225 (most of it done in malls or the aisles of big grocery stores) from Tuesday to Friday. I can’t add Saturday’s because I pushed the delete button accidentally. I didn’t calibrate my steps-over-distance until Saturday either, so I can’t post properly estimated distances yet.
The weather hasn’t been at all conducive to outdoor exercise; 0 hrs. time on my Trikke this week.

to everybody for my wonderful birthday party…..

Especially, of course, to StelBel

for all the work she did… it was amazing!

Thank you, thank you!

And to Nighthawks, for “hosting” it here on Cleo…

and to all of you, who came bearing birthday greetings!

I was overwhelmed.

It was great to see the whole Cleo gang….

including those who haven’t been here for a while….

Thanks Arfside, Rotifer, for showing up for my day…

And thanks to those who came over from GoComics, like rm8ty, Saint, Impkins and Patznozzle…

Come on back, you guys!

(that list is by no means complete!)

and now… HAPPY EASTER, everybody!

And good night!
