Well, just because you’re in a handy up-top position, this might be a good time to reply to a question you asked yesterday…
which just happens to a be similar to one I’m replying to in an email I haven’t finished yet… and others might want to know.
..
You said “Is there any notification feature to let me know if/when someone replies to one of my posts? I’m looking for something like the little bell on GoComics with links to the replies.”
I’ve not found anything like that… but one thing that does help is hidden away in a tiny icon.
…
Above the comments is a comment count…
Next to it is a very small icon, a generic “user head” with a teensy settings “gear”.
(Mousing over it, you’ll see “My content and settings”)
Click it, and there’s a list of all your past comments.
Click one of those, and you’ll go directly to it.
..
If you happen to be looking for replies to a specific comment, it’s much easier than scrolling pages, wondering where you posted it.
Hope that helps a little.
…
BTW… if you see references to comments and posts on WordPress…
we call what we say here either a comment or a post…
but if you’re ever looking through “Help” articles (if you can find any) …
I originally posted a Paul McCartney video above that ended up not working. Liverlips let me know, so I edited it, removing the defective one and replacing it with a McCartney video that works.
Liverlips then edited his comment, thereby removing the mention of the offending video.
There. All caught up. Everything is in working order.
We’ve been informed that again, the site will be down for approximately a half hour to an hour from 11:30 PM and on tonight. I meant to let you all know sooner, but forgot. I apologize.
(BTW, that notice was meant for Wed.4/28 to Thurs.4/29)
It all gets so confusing….my dad used to say, “Don’t be sorry. Don’t do it.”
(Personally, I have to say I do like the option of an apology, though…..just in case I inadvertently do something that was not well thought out.)
Since it’s all over and done with, please forgive me if I don’t bother to explain that I meant from 11:30 PM Eastern Time on Wednesday, 4/28/2021 until 12:30 AM Eastern Time on Thursday, 4/29/2021.
When we humans are lucky enough to visit a dog event or venue, we eat or drink what our canine hosts provide…
Including kibblecorn at the movies, and beef juleps at the Derby.
…
We can recreate some of that magical experience at home, with recipes for the same refreshments.
Traditional Houndtucky Beef Julep:
1/4 tsp Powdered sugar, 1 tsp beef “Better than Bullion” or 1 boullion cube, 2 oz. Kentucky Bourbon (1oz for dogs under 50 lbs) , 2 Tbsp Boiling Water, Beef Jerky or small Bone for garnish.
(If real beef broth is available, omit boullion and water, and substitute 3 to 4 tbsp hot or cold broth.)
In a highball glass or small water dish, mix the bullion, sugar and water… Crush cube if necessary. Fill the glass or bowl with cracked ice, add Bourbon and stir well. Garnish with a step of jerky or a small, preferably meaty, beef bone.
Milk Bones are not recommended for garnishing liquid.
Okay, so I know the zipper was invented by a Canadian guy, eh? But then this science show claimed the zipper was an example of an “inclined plane.” So I said “Huh?” But the show never got back to me, eh? Anybody know why zippers are inclined planes?
a zipper is called a simple machine because it works by putting two inclined planes (wedges) side by side so those inclined planes create a sharp edge there by forming a zipper.
Okay, but I don’t see an inclined plane (a tool to lift weights against gravity) as being equivalent to a “keystone” (a tool that holds weights together… )
The zipper pull has diagonal sides, that easily slide up the wedges (ie the little inclined planes) of the teeth, pushing them together.
It makes the distribution of that force simple and smooth. If the tooth sides were straight instead of inclined, the zipper head would have no… um… inclination to move.
As the head pushes them, little tiny teeth or spikes on the top of each tooth are forced into interlocking with an indentation in the tooth above, holding them together.
..
Downward, another double inclined plane, a wedge, is pulled between the teeth, separating them.
Wedges are often used to separate things…
Like an axe blade driving wood fibers apart… Which is similar to a screw wedging out a spiral path.
Welll, maybe. but I thought “simple machines” only did one thing each… Now we got wedges and screws making inclined planes work — it ain’t simple any more!!!!
I don’t have actual knowledge of this, but I would think you would run the Derby first, then the wiener dogs. If you race the wiener dogs first, you run the risk of a straggler when the bigger, stronger, and heavier beasts come rumbling through. Nobody wants to see that collision.

May Day! May Day! Another gorgeous poster. I really like that Derby Poster, too.
The run for the roses; beautiful poster. Are all the bassets 3 year olds?
Hee hee, I’m first again. Feels so weird because usually I’m soooo far from first.
I have blank canvas syndrome, whatever I write will be seen everyone who checks out the site and I have writer’s block. 🙂

WordPress calls our user-added content “Comments“.
Only actual blog posts, as made by Nighthawks and SteBel above the comments, are referred to as “Posts.”
Thanks
and, to Plods…..
Thanks to you both for your explanations. Very helpful!
Just to the left of the post comment button
Got it, thank you.
Oh… sorry, I was forgetting to mention that one…
the difference is, if you use the bell icon, you get email…
separate messages for every reply, including the content.
..
I tried it for a while, but I comment a lot…
I was getting e-mails about replies to replies, and it was too much…
But maybe I should have used it on fewer of my comments.
…
The icon I was describing is not a bell, it’s a generic “game playing piece” style head.
It doesn’t send you any email, or even tell you if there are any replies..
It simply takes you directly to your own comment, so you can check for yourself.
..
I wish we could check other users’ comments that way,
like the most recent 10 comments (which I wish were 20), linked to on GoComics profile pages… including our own.
..
You can follow another user by clicking what looks kind of like a WiFi icon right below their avatar…
But again, that sends you a lot of email if the person is a prolific commenter.
I didn’t know that “bland canvas syndrome” was a real thing. Good Lord, I have that ALL the time!! LOL
Thanks for the nice words, P51Strega !
Not that I’d ever pick on a typo…
But bland canvas is funny.
I’ve seen some.
How long is the Ky. Derby, 1 1/4 miles? How much time for a basset to cover that distance at top speed? Six hours? Eight?
Less than 4.5 minutes – if they use a high-speed golf cart at top speed.
Cleo probably has something supersonic to beat the odds…
Thank you. The new link works and it’s a terrific performance.
I just edited it and replaced it with another version. Hope it works.
Thanks for letting me know! Glad you enjoyed it….me, too.
What link are we discussing, pray tell?
I guess it doesn’t matter any more, if they all work now… right?

A strong candidate for dumbest tag line of all time.
Love means constantly having to say you’re sorry.
You are absolutely right! So, no more apologies…..until the next time.
I seem to be really confused tonight… but when you say “tonight” and I’m here at 5am…
Does “Wed.4/28 to Thurs.4/29” mean it started a few hours ago, and ran past midnight… but it’s over…
or that it repeats again later, on the night of 4/29?
I’m assuming all times are Eastern… but I hate to assume anything around here.
Since it’s all over and done with, please forgive me if I don’t bother to explain that I meant from 11:30 PM Eastern Time on Wednesday, 4/28/2021 until 12:30 AM Eastern Time on Thursday, 4/29/2021.
Ok…..I’m glad I don’t need to know!
😁
What an opportunity to display your finest finery! What a lovely basset you make, Cleo!
I was hesitant to play John Prine, because I have only recently gotten him out of my head. Mostly a depressing sort of earworm.
Such speed! Such grace! Such dedication to winning! I’m surprised the camera could follow them!
HISTERICAL!
The most perfect video for today! Loved it!!
The track announcer is superb. He makes the whole thing work.
Ooh, a new poster from StelBel!
How beautiful is that hat?
..
The Houndtucky Derby!
It’s really gonna happen this year!
..
Last year’s event was postponed, then attendance was finally limited to dogs only…
This year, humans may attend at 25 to 40% capacity…. so we’ll at least see some of the familiar pomp and glamor.
I always enjoy the hats and flowers.
…
Watching from homelike most of us?
Time to dig out the recipes for beef juleps and kibble burgoo…
and read up on the favorites for this year’s run.
MMMMMMMM. Beef juleps.
Can’t resist – meat-based, as opposed to plant-based, booze?
Mea culpa, everyone.
Except for a few human attendees, they’re dogs.
What do they want with plants?

Thanks for the recipe. Copying it now.
……and, don’t forget to put your wreath out!!
(typical Bassetville, Houndtucky front door)
Good morning, Cleomaniac and P51!
@P51Strega… The bell button for replies is just to the left of <Post Comment>
A beautiful and timely Houndtuckey Derby poster. I forget. Is the Derby before or after the weiner dog dash down the front straight?
NATIONAL ZIPPER, PEACE ROSE, POEM IN YOUR POCKET, SHRIMP SCAMPI DAY
Gonna apologize for this up front…
Roses are red?
Peace Rose is yellow
Scampi in my pocket
I’m gonna bellow.
Sorry
Y’all be peaceful (((((HUGz)))))
Thank you plods. You certainly don’t plod when it comes to computers.
33 years of it. Old habits die hard.
Thanks… I forgot to mention that method.
As I said to P51Strega in a longer reply above… Using the bell icon sends you notification emails… I didn’t really want them, but some people do.
The icon I was talking about just lets you do a quick search of your own comments, all the way back, without contacting you.
Your choice.
I’m lazy. I’ll take a ding from my email. It’s a refreshing change from spam.

Except for the modern (only 50 or so years old) ones that are nylon coils?
Okay, but I don’t see an inclined plane (a tool to lift weights against gravity) as being equivalent to a “keystone” (a tool that holds weights together… )
They’re inclined in different directions.
Zippers are about force, not weight.
The zipper pull has diagonal sides, that easily slide up the wedges (ie the little inclined planes) of the teeth, pushing them together.
It makes the distribution of that force simple and smooth. If the tooth sides were straight instead of inclined, the zipper head would have no… um… inclination to move.

Wedges are often used to separate things…
Like an axe blade driving wood fibers apart… Which is similar to a screw wedging out a spiral path.
But what about the force that causes the zipper over my belly to pop open?
You gotta stop reading those naughty magazines…
Not THAT zipper!
Gravity.
Welll, maybe. but I thought “simple machines” only did one thing each… Now we got wedges and screws making inclined planes work — it ain’t simple any more!!!!

…,
Yes… again…
sorry,
I’m old,
I forgot
Did it again anyway.
Nobody has left.
I’m old, too. I’d forgotten….
Oooo… ‘Pretty hat day’ is coming up! What a beautiful rose our gal is wearing! Let’s all meet in Houndtucky for this fashion show!
She also had her ears done!
Oooooo…. how velvety smooth!
Yes, let’s!!! I’ve got the perfect hat, too!
….
Great if it’s basil or parsley, etc…
Mint… maybe not so much.
Another time. But, kudos again, StelBel!!!
Thanks, mabrndt !!
Does a Kentucky Puppy beat a Georgia Peach? You bet it does!
Always.
