This was taken at the 1998 Oscars.. Gloria Stuart was born in July 1910, so she wouldn’t have had her birthday yet at Oscar time…
So she was “only” 87.

She’s wearing the most expensive piece of jewelry ever worn to the Oscars… valued by the jeweler at 20 million dollars!
She’d been nominated for Best Supporting Actress, for playing 100-year-old Rose in “Titanic.”
Jeweler Harry Winston created the necklace for her to wear to the Oscars… his version in real diamonds of the one she wore in the movie, called “Heart of the Ocean.”

The necklace actually used in the movie was heart-shaped… and a fake..
but it was meant to suggest the Hope diamond… which was real, and NOT heart shaped…. and was never worn on the Titanic.

Celine Dion also wore a version of “Heart of the Ocean” that night, when she sang the Oscar-winning song…
Hers was a heart shaped blue Sri Lankan sapphire, with diamonds, and much less valuable.
Meanwhile, J. Peterman Company bought the rights to sell copies of the fake one, which they did, lots of them….for $250… more than they were worth, and Peterman was later sorry.

All I can say is, I think Gloria Stuart looked great for 87 years old!
With a little love, support, and luck, this wee sprout at Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park in California has a big future in store. It’s a coast redwood, the species that includes the tallest trees on Earth. Some top out at more than 350 feet tall and live for over 2,000 years. These redwoods are heroes of nature, affecting the weather and climate while creating conditions essential for a healthy ecosystem along this stretch of the Pacific Coast.
But all of this little sprout’s potential is at risk because the coast redwood is an endangered species. Before commercial logging began in the mid-1800s, coast redwoods stretched across 2 million acres of the California coast—today, only 118,000 acres of older coast redwood forest remain. But they’re at least protected in areas like this state park.
We’re considering the fate of this young seedling today because it’s an especially important day for it and for all trees. That’s right, today is Arbor Day, the day where we stop for a moment to think about the trees (and hopefully even plant a few). The first American Arbor Day occurred 150 years ago when an estimated 1 million trees were planted in Nebraska in 1872. This year, America’s Arbor Day Foundation is celebrating its 50th year of dedication to tree planting. They’ve planted over 350 million of them over the years, but the mission never ends. Trees are vital to the health of our planet, which means they’re important for our own health as well.
Come on, little guy! We’re rooting for you. I hope you will still be around 2,000 years from now to bear witness to whatever it is humans will have made of this paradise. None of us will be alive then, most of us not even in memories. We hope our descendants will still be here, but sadly I don’t think we can even be sure of that. The thought of all the history your ancestors have lived through is beyond comprehension.
