…which led me to the book by Baroness Orczy (Mrs. Montague Barstow).
My dad was always quoting the well known couplet from “The Scarlett Pimpernel”, but I never thought to ask him where it came from.
I finally found out via the movie above.
My dad also used to recite short bits of Kipling, Service, Carroll and a bunch of others too, but since I knew where the first three at least, came from; from Mom’s readings to us, I could look them up any time to put them in context (Dad was often random).
But when I think about it now, it was Dad, not Mom who introduced us to poetry (although as I said Mom read it to us as it came up in books (particularly Kipling — Dad had to finish reading “The Yearling” though; all three of us were crying and Dad’s voice hitched a few times too).
As a side note, as soon as we could read, we were allowed to read anything we wanted to.
I guess our parents decided we would read what we liked and put down the book that, if I may be permitted, “didn’t live up to its cover.”
When we first joined the library Mother was offered children’s cards for my sister and me, but when she found out that it restricted the books we could take out she got us “adult” cards (to the library’s credit, the librarian simply processed our memberships).
Since it’s “anything goes” day, here’s 21 seconds of a cat…
That, I cannot explain. The link was set up using Chrome and I tested it before posting. I just tested it and the 21- seconds- of-cat video as posted and they both still work for me.
As I said, I’ve got no explanation.
Here is the Youtube video the link connects to.
Several years ago Matthaei Botanical Gardens hosted the fairies in their conservatory over the winter. That’s what first introduced me to them. Since then, I found that my library has one of the larger books of the fairies and I borrowed it – even though it was in the youth department. Delightful pictures and stories.
OK, I’m back from Maine, home of lobstah, chowdah, crab cakes and family. Fun vacation. Thanks StelBel for absorbing much of the rain so we only got a little of it. Too bad about your leak. The house we were in was built in the 1830’s for a sea captain. Well taken care of and added onto, but you can see a bit of minor sag in some of the floors where it’s settled a little bit. In historic Bath, so there are lots of beautiful old houses to enjoy. The whole area is so different from SoCal. I’d like to get some of their rain, but not so much humidity.
Maine blueberries are the best! Glad I don’t have to pick them, though. Saw all kinds of examples of the tools at the blueberry festival, and my back would be complaining after a day (heck, maybe an hour) of that.
The walk to the Breakwater lighthouse was a challenge – about 7/8 of a mile over huge granite blocks. Great views, but then you have to turn around and go back. Not for ML with a bad hip. By the way, quit trying to kick MM, and you might do better.
Trip was great, but sitting in a plane for hours on the runway trying to get to Chicago to catch a connecting flight wasn’t much fun. Masked all the time (ugh!) Finally got home a day late (and a few hotel dollars shorter).Time to thaw some of my first try at smoked pulled pork (it turned out really well). It made great sandwiches for the trip.
Susan (and the rest of you with all your various problems), get better!
Maine is a GREAT vacation place! …..so glad you had a good time! I used to go up there all the time. There’s so much to do and, of course, the seafood is the BEST!
I was glad to do my part in absorbing as much rain as possible! Had I known, I wouldn’t have complained as much as I did! LOL

Again, love this so much more than the human version. Tony-boy Androols ~ love it!!!
Would love to see their costumes. Beautiful poster.
Periodically, I have a similar (although probably not as horribly painful) problem that is part of my back pain and nerve problem, so I can well imagine what you’ve been going through! Sending good healing vibes your way! Get better soon!!!!!
[Human Version]
(BTW, excuse the lack of a “theme” today….I was in an “anything goes” kind of mood!)
….
Ha Ha!
If I could talk to that lady in the second video I’d say, “Hey! Lady! I want to see more of your beaver.”
.
I wonder, back in the day, did anyone actually try to smoke banana skin?
far out, man….easier to ask what we DIDN’t smoke!
Yeah, i knew a couple of those guys. 😀
I had a friend in HS who said he tried a banana peel once. Did nothing.
The link below is to the version…

It worked for me today.
OK…..there you go!
Worked for me on Firefox.
Dennis, I use Chrome, too, and it worked. So, maybe that wasn’t the problem!
I wasn’t going to take up any more space today, but while I was looking for something else I came upon 13 minutes and 11 seconds of Prince…
.…in a hard-rock jam session (good jamming, no language).
take up all the space you want, old top!
That beaver video was fun! Not for the keepers, but they seem to have a good attitude about it.
He was just soooo cute, and…”Justin Beaver”….what an absolutely perfect name!!!
Us old timers might have preferred “Theodore”
True! Another good one!
Okay, to sum up:
The Wild Scarlet Thing Goes Anywhere.

You MUST have the fried clams next year, otherwise you won’t be allowed back a third time!!! lol
