The water was a little bit low but otherwise everything went well. Saw 2 bears, some big horn sheep, lots of ospreys and bald eagles, 3 river otters and a critter I couldn’t positively identify (I’m calling it a mountain woodchuck). Also, a gorp monster a/k/a chipmunk got into my dry bag, stole my Metamucil, and tried to make off with it.
I was in the library last week. As part of its programming, the staff put different books up on a display stand and change them out on a regular basis. Last week the novella, “Coraline” by Neil Gaiman was one of the books. I enjoyed the movie when it came out in 2009, and didn’t think twice about picking up the book (I didn’t even know it was a book until last week). Am I glad I did!
It took me about 2 hours to read, and I enjoyed every word of it. It was written for children, but Gaiman wrote it to teach about universal truths, and he did it well. The novella is more disturbing than outright scary, but children will get the lessons. A good read for all ages.
After reading the book, I went looking for the movie again. I’ve just finished watching it.
Plot: All important book elements in, and done in proper style. Scene to scene continuity: Excellent. Animation: Excellent (it’s stop motion done by computer, but the animators can program) . Voice actors and actresses : Dual (good and evil) roles: If you had only the sound you could tell immediately which character was being played Single roles: Consistent throughout. Ending: Well done fairy-tale (particularly the last bit before the credits roll).
If you want to do some fun thinking, find copies of the novella and movie, and enjoy yourself (or selves).
