Out of curiosity, I Googled what I made out to be the name on the window, thinking it probably wasn’t real… but it is!
…
Edited way down from its Wikipedia entry…
“McSorley’s Old Ale House is the oldest Irish saloon in New York City.
No piece of memorabilia has been removed from the walls since 1910, and there are many items of historical paraphernalia in the bar, such as Houdini’s handcuffs, which are connected to the bar rail.
In 2005, New York magazine considered McSorley’s to be one of New York City’s “Top 5 Historic Bars”.”
And just for contrast, here is a painting of McSorley’s in 1912 by artist John French Sloan.
I stumbled across the painting while looking for the actual opening day of McSorley’s.
There is some controversy regarding the founding date. New York City records and the U.S. census both have evidence that contradicts the 1854 year claimed.
I could find no claim anywhere that McSorley’s moved to its present long standing location at any time.
The punch line escaped me for a moment, then I remembered a joke which (due to ladies present) cannot be repeated here.
Those old time cartoonists did have their fun; although to be fair it was designed to sail right over kids’ heads.
From yesterday.
“Would the recipe be a disaster if you cut the pears into 1/4″ slices?”
In all seriousness, no, but the pears would likely break down into something resembling applesauce, not chunks of pear, when it was eaten.
P.S.
I doubt the lower mainland in general has done anything to improve its snow clearing ability.
Are you still stuck, or two days later, has the weather done it for you again?
.
Looks as if they haven’t updated the interior since 1854.
Right.
S’Ok with me, though.

Surely a McCracken can appreciate that!
The outside; painted by the same artist, Janet Ternoff.
I did not find a source I consider reliable for the paintings’ titles, if any.

I feel like I should be able to name all these folks, but no. Garry Moore and Bill Cullen?
from’ I’ve Got a Secret’ from the top:
Garry Moore
Bess Myerson, Henry Morgan
Bill Cullen and Betsy Palmer
I recognised them all….I was going to label them but you beat me to it.
Is that good or a bit pathetic?
…
The funny thing is, I know who they all are but not what some did to be famous… except for being on panel shows.
Garry Moore, the host, had a variety show at some point.
Bill Cullen hosted other game shows.
Bess Myerson had been … as my mother always reminded me…. the first Jewish Miss America, back in the 1940’s.
…
Henry Morgan? Betsy Palmer?
Nada, unless I cheat and Google them.
A REPRINT OF THE ARTICLE ACCOMPANYING THE COVER
Whether the typographical error at the end was in the original print or not, I don’t know.
Hmmm…
I need to see what’s in the fridge.
The punch line escaped me for a moment, then I remembered a joke which (due to ladies present) cannot be repeated here.

Oft heard was: “Mommy, why is Daddy laughing so hard?”
Pity Claude & Cleo. They can’t imagine going for a nosh without opening the fridge. Don’t they have any non-perishable food items?
Probably better they go to the fridge, except for the lights and alarms.
Let’s face it… they’re not looking for an apple, or some raisins…. or to cook anything.
What they’d eat from the cupboards would probably be chips, cookies, and candy… unless there’s some pastry or cake.
corn fritters
A different type of fritter…
From yesterday.

So far the weather’s done better at clearing the roads than the maintenance crews. (As usual…)
For the recipe I was wondering what you would use to slice your pears into uniform 3/8″ slices. Is a mandolin that precise?
Maybe it’s a conversion from metric – that would be about 1 cm.
today is the official day to simply fritter it away
I can do that!!
This is a historic Cleo and Company strip…
The first animation… and still funny.
Cleo still rufs and wufs, on all fours… but I love the way she sneaks.
Glad you got it plugged back in, Nighthawks!
all i can say is…………
AHHH,,,,OOOO…..GAH!!!
You misspelled “hysterical”. – As in ~ “laughter”.
originally ran April 2015, I believe
Friday, April 10, 2015 to be exact.
I found the date in the leftover bits and bites that GoComics still hasn’t cleaned up.
The original run was on September 19th, 2014.
It’s on the file name from when I saved it.
By the time of the rerun, the next April, other animations had been shown, as well…
But this was the very first.
Clara knows Claude and Cleo better than they would like her to!
