This is a Brazilian Jabiru, a particularly large kind of stork.

According to Wikipedia, it’s the tallest flying bird in South and Central America, with adult males reaching about 5 feet.

In the Tupi-Guarani language, Jabiru means “swollen neck”. What a surprise.

The skin of its head and neck is featherless, and the pink part is especially stretchy.

They say that while it looks odd and ungainly on the ground (no kidding), it’s a beautiful and graceful flyer.

From the moment I saw his first music video, I was taken by the strength of his voice and vocals, of the promises yet to come from him and Jim Steinman. Gone too soon due to complications of CoVId. Bat Out Of Hell and some of Bat Out Of Hell II were his best.
His Wikipedia listing is so very interesting to read as well.

Ding ding! Winner!

I don’t know whether you were remembering or guessing…

But this is the original cover of the book!

It was written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsberg.

I believe there were later editions with illustrations based on the movies instead.

The painting?

SusanSunshine

The painting doesn’t say they’re chimps, and the book definitely says they’re monkeys.

If you’re saying Van Allsberg gave them rather chimp like faces in this illustration, that could be… but it says more about his vision or maybe his artistic limitations than about anybody calling them chimpanzees.

I don’t know enough to say there are no monkeys that look like that, either.

And I’m a puzzlaholic…. wrong person to ask.

There have been a few with just too many little things…

Like I remember a couple with, say, find the tractor that’s different out of 6473 teensy ones (give or take)… that were too tedious to try.

I just wish some of these were better executed.

The manufacturer is called HighCotton gifts.

They make, among other things, doormats with jokes on them….
So they make the labels funny too.

‘The Veiled Woman’ sculpted by Italian artist Giovanni Battista Antonelli in 1869.

There’s a whole genre of so called veiled statuary.

I’ve never seen a piece up close in real life, and it fascinates me.

This is not a marble statue draped in a veil… It’s one piece, including the veil, carved out of a solid block of marble.

The “cloth” is not translucent, it’s sculpted to look that way. You’re not actually seeing her eyes through the veil, but the veil, carved as though to reveal them beneath.

It’s hard to look at a photo and even imagine it.

Incredible skill!

There’s some lace here, edging the shawl.

It might be the knitted kind.. a bit thicker than some very delicate lace I’ve seen carved, but still quite impressive.

Check the underneath fold, in the first picture, near the pedestal.

While you’re at it, just look at the braid of hair above her forehead.

Amazing.

Thank you for the recap, Nighthawks…. I hadn’t forgotten, but it never hurts to be reminded.

And now….. ¡Dios Mio!

It’s ¡Perroin action!

Most people try to leap out of jail… but our brave Perro™ leaps in!

It’s for the daring rescue of Senorita Voluptuosa

She who somehow, I think, mysteriously attracts our Perro™
What could it be about her?

Fair young maiden” indeed… though to be fair, her considerable charms are not the only thing that lures him to action.

He is dedicated, we all know, to freeing the poor people of the village from the likes of Commandante Slurez

along with the horrid Mayor Asesinato…. I don’t like the sound of him, either..

But now… he’s been spotted!

Is this one of Slurez’s faithful minions…

or someone who’d just as soon look the other way?

Will Perro™‘s plan be foiled? Oh NO!
….

Once again… we’ll have to come back to see!

I’m going to reserve some space on my monitor for the next exciting episode!

Won’t you join me?
