Pop always wanted to fly one of those.
i recently saw piece on YouTube that they were miserable hot in the summer, and miserable cold in the winter.
They were cutting edge innovation in their day.
No, the nose was full of guns. There was a glass nose nose version with a bombardier smooshed in; it would lead a flight of standard P-38s and when the bombardier dropped, so did the rest. There was a photo recon version with a nose full of cameras.
There was another plane of similar layout, but much larger that was a night fighter. The P-61 Black Widow had 4 20mm cannons in a bulging belly and four 0.50 cal machineguns in a trainable turret on top. It had radar in the nose.
Others – I’m thinking of P51Strega especially, will know better than me, but those do not look as though they were in any way, comfortable to fly. The pilot looks very vulnerable, and what, if anything, is (hopefully) protecting his rear?
yes. the WW2 Japanese method of fighter aircraft construction was to make them nimble, fast and maneuverable. Ergo, light weight was the prime consideration. The pilot was just going to have to hope or trust in the gods that no one gets on his tail since he and his Mitusbushi Zero were highly vulnerable
Great selection of tunes tonight, Nighthawks. B, S, & T were practically heroes to me as a HS trumpet player. They lost none of their appeal while I was in college, either. Their first lead trumpet player was Randy Brecker, of Brecker Brothers fame as well as other rock, fusion, and jazz bands. After him came the guy most familiar to early fans of the group, Lew Soloff. Monster player.
I played some, in college, with a ridiculously gifted trumpet player, Paul, who said that he had only ever met two trumpeters better than him; Lew Soloff and Jon Faddis. Mr. Faddis is a legendary player, primarily of jazz, himself.
drew our attention to Cindy Blackman Santana on the drums.
Here she is performing in solo at Drumeo.
You can easily see where being wrong about her age comes in.
Her talent? That’s real.
Thank you. And I want to point out that that level of energy wasn’t just reserved for her solo. She was doing that all night, through every song. With Carlos’s guitar, a bongo player and a bass it was an amazingly powerful concert.

This photo immediately reminded me of some of the lyrics from The 59th Street Bridge Song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xhJcQEfD5s
My second favourite song of theirs (“The Sound of Silence” being the first).
Don’t use the link from the overview. The link from the actual song is the right one to show what it is.
nose!
He just looks so comfy!

First with radar?
I’m not sure of that but there were night fighter versions.

Yes! That’s it! The Black Widow!
Things like that give deadly poisonous spiders a bad name.

Big thick steel plate at his back. I remember that one.

I am so jealous. To see three P-38s in formation like that would be amazing.

The lady can play, no doubt about it.

Once again, please keep these coming.

I’m going in for an ultrasound today to see if i have a hernia or if it’s something worse.
Or at lest find out what it is.
Good luck. Hernia is bad enough ~ don’t have anything worse, okay?
I seem to be falling apart lately. :)
