On the roof of Apple Corps headquarters in London, January 30th 1969. Their last live performance as the Beatles.
George and Ringo almost refused to do it. I think all but John had already quit and come back.
It was unannounced and not advertised, but large crowds gathered in the street as they played. Security probably kept everybody off the adjacent rooftops, but I’ve read that there were hundreds of people on other nearby buildings. I can only see one in this picture.
After about 40 minutes the Metropolitan Police showed up and ordered them to turn down the volume cos they’d had noise complaints! Noise complaints about a free Beatles concert!
There’s a scaffold barrier railing behind him at the edge of the boards, bit tricky to see. The whole ‘stage’ is raised off of the actual roof on a scaffold platform.
Singing Angels – detail of The Ghent Altarpiece, by Jan van Eyck.
i love the expressions… more like teenaged girls at a high school musical rehearsal… gossiping, squabbling, annoyed… than angelic.
This was just at the point of medieval painting turning into Renaissance art, starting to abandon stiff symbolism for realistic portrayals… so it was a new idea to make them look so human.
This bit is not as big as you might think… about 27″ wide… but it’s the top of an oak panel that’s over 6′ tall, and only one section of the huge, folding altarpiece of St. Bavo’s Cathedral in Ghent.
The whole altarpiece is thought to have been laid out and started by Jan Van Eyck’s older brother, Hubert, but either finished or wholly painted by Jan, a more famous artist, in 1432.
we haven’t been above freezing for many days—it’s 11 right now—I awoke to minus 4 a couple days ago with wind chill much lower…….January ’26 has been excruciatingly fridgid
We haven’t had any for a while, after weeks of above normal. It was a wet winter but they say it may be a dry spring…. Not that they can ever predict N.Ca weather.
I’ll never forget when my mother baked cookies for my class for my 8th birthday, in Cleveland, in the days when you were still allowed to do that.
We awoke to an unexpected late blizzard.
She didn’t drive, so we walked to my school, about a mile away, on sidewalks cleared through drifts taller than my head, with wet snow falling on us, soaking the flat cardboard boxes we each carried.
Thin cardboard… I think you used to get them from the dry cleaner.
The cupcakes and I barely made it.
.
It looks cute. Then I noticed; is Fluffy flexing her right biceps?
It does look rather peculiar, especially when magnified. Probably just chest fur, but….
I thought it was the tip of her tail, curled over her chest…. But now I looked again, and I see that her tail is lying next to her back legs.
So yeah… loose furry skin on her chest?
Cats are liquid, so you never know.
I snapped that (yes, with a camera, not a phone) back in about 2010 –that’s my mom’s cat Ike and my doggie Milo
Cool!

If I was the drummer, I’d be pretty uneasy being that close to the edge.

Yes, in fact they’re surrounded by railings.

Can I have the boat when you’re finished?
Warren County NY- 1911
Looks like the start of a Broadway Musical. “The Music Man?”
But with more historically accurate costuming.
Apparently, straw boaters were in fashion at that time.
Very much so… And some fashionable ladies’ hats were huge.
Look at the one on the young lady 2nd from the right on the bottom.
She looks as tall as a short grownup… but some of that is her enormous hat, and her dress is that of an adolescent, at the oldest.
I believe she’s holding a bouquet of flowers, as well… She looks like something you’d see embroidered on a pillowcase.

What cute little toesie-woesies…
Mama Lily strider… “What do you mean, they’re too tight? Already?? We just bought you new shoes last month!”

The whole thing… The outside panels also have paintings on the back, for when it’s in its usual folded position.
It was opened up like this on feast days and other special occasions.
thanks for providing the particulars—where I snagged it, it was just labeled ‘singing angels’
Couple of those girls look a little hungover.
🥴🤪
Well, you know… underage angels and holy water…

I’m dead.
I found it… but nowhere near fast enough…
I can’t say more because I guess I didn’t survive.
Roll me over easy boys. I’ve been snake bit, and I’m fixin’ to die.
movie line? or from an Owen Wister Zane or Grey novel?
Who knows? I have fairly eclectic tastes in books and movies, although they tend to go more toward sci-fi and westerns.
I’m still dead.
Confound it! you shouldn’t be out in those spooky old woods!
I was looking for a camouflaged sniper.
And I was looking for a mountain lion, or whatever they’re called where you are, till my eye caught something.
..
Argh!
Well…..
If you concentrate… and probably squint, like I have to… you can see that
this , I know is something I’ve posted before but it’s worth another look

focus on the white cat for a few seconds, then switch to the eyes on the left and you can briefly see an illusion of the black cat

Me too.
I’m a California girl.
Okay, Northern California… we’re tough.
We can handle the extreme cold of a 50°F day, if we bundle up in enough layers. But not snow.
Down in LA they freeze at 62°.
Yeah, I’m down here near LA in short sleeves, and I finally closed the windows because my arms were getting cool. It’s 64 degrees at about 1:45AM.

Brrr… Hope you have good heat in your house.
I had grades 1-4 in Cleveland and high school in Wisconsin, with a 4-year break for Libya, for contrast, so I know what that feels like!
My brother’s in Bath, Maine. We try not to visit at this time of the year. 😉
good idea
I got rain! 🙂

We had a weeklong beak. That’s not normal.
Hey, it’s not like I’ve always been spoiled…

‘Fitchett Bros’, – Luis F. Perez (contemporary Colombian-American artist). Watercolour, 16 x 12 in (40.6 x 30.5 cm).
I thought it was a photo!
So did I. Incredibly detailed, especially for a watercolor.
