The cigarettes are filtered so they are likely either Parliaments or Viceroys the two brands with the biggest market share in the ’30s; both made by Brown and Williamson.
Matchbooks were patented in 1892, but the match used in the photograph is a wooden one taken from the box in hand.

I can’t find any timelines detailed enough to state which, but I’m sure that two images in the drawings were either the inspiration for, or were inspired by, The Shadow, and Betty Boop.
While all that may be true, that would negate the whole premise of the gag. Since it’s a comic strip where humor is key, why would you want to do that? Just let it go………..

Sadly, this is the way of the world these days. Take the picture or video first, then maybe help. But, I have to say that the pictures and videos can be very important. It wouldn’t have hurt Claude to make a little call to 9-1-1, though.

Valerie Bertinelli has a new book out titled: “Enough Already.”
I’m not going to be reading the book, but I became really interested in her almost 36 minute interview with Tom Power of CBC’s “Q.”
She’s a really nice human being.
The interview touches several times on her marriage and nearing reconciliation with Eddie van Halen before his death from Covid. Her learning to cook Indonesian dishes from her mother-in-law Eugenia ( van Beers) van Halen came up in relation to her cooking show.
Her admiration for Betty White comes through loud and clear.

They’re wearing 1920’s or very early 30’s bathing suits, not tennis whites, and the cigarettes have been highlighted with white ink or paint.
I’ve seen this picture elsewhere, too…. uncropped, with their bare legs showing.
Bobbed hair, naked legs, cigarettes… I think this was meant to be scandalous, at that time, and probably titillating.
I’m not titillated. I never smoked, thankfully, and not impressed by it. But that is a nice racket.
I guess Miley Cyrus was coping Faith Hill.

The oldest she could have been when she made this was 21; she’ll be 30 on Wednesday, November 23 of this year.
She was a couple of months short of 21, by the dates.
