The photograph was apparently taken sometime in the 1930s.
Accepting that.
The cigarettes are filtered so they are likely either Parliaments or Viceroys the two brands with the biggest market share in the ’30s; both made by Brown and Williamson.
Matchbooks were patented in 1892, but the match used in the photograph is a wooden one taken from the box in hand.
Another well researched and narrated episode by Pete Beard.
I can’t find any timelines detailed enough to state which, but I’m sure that two images in the drawings were either the inspiration for, or were inspired by, The Shadow, and Betty Boop.
While all that may be true, that would negate the whole premise of the gag. Since it’s a comic strip where humor is key, why would you want to do that? Just let it go………..
Repeat three times: it’s only a cartoon…it’s only a cartoon…it’s only a cartoon…
Sadly, this is the way of the world these days. Take the picture or video first, then maybe help. But, I have to say that the pictures and videos can be very important. It wouldn’t have hurt Claude to make a little call to 9-1-1, though.
Valerie Bertinelli has a new book out titled: “Enough Already.”
I’m not going to be reading the book, but I became really interested in her almost 36 minute interview with Tom Power of CBC’s “Q.”
She’s a really nice human being.
The interview touches several times on her marriage and nearing reconciliation with Eddie van Halen before his death from Covid. Her learning to cook Indonesian dishes from her mother-in-law Eugenia ( van Beers) van Halen came up in relation to her cooking show.
Her admiration for Betty White comes through loud and clear.
.
That Leonardo illustration is hard to take when it’s someone you know.
Well, that’s not Cleo.
That is clear.
Happy and Dennis:
LOL !!!
This, no doubt, is one of Leonardo’s preparatory sketches.
Tmi.
(Yes; I knew.) 😉
WordPress has a myriad of options, but no trigger warning?
LOL
Vincent VanGogh
I love Van Gogh, but I’ve always thought the brush strokes in this one make him look like a werewolf.
game, set, match!

Nighthawks:
great wordplay! I’m glad they weren’t using a Bic!
They’re wearing 1920’s or very early 30’s bathing suits, not tennis whites, and the cigarettes have been highlighted with white ink or paint.
I’ve seen this picture elsewhere, too…. uncropped, with their bare legs showing.
Bobbed hair, naked legs, cigarettes… I think this was meant to be scandalous, at that time, and probably titillating.
I’m not titillated. I never smoked, thankfully, and not impressed by it. But that is a nice racket.
I guess Miley Cyrus was coping Faith Hill.
copying
The oldest she could have been when she made this was 21; she’ll be 30 on Wednesday, November 23 of this year.
She was a couple of months short of 21, by the dates.
LOL… I think Faith Hill would be horrified at that suggestion…
Or at least would think Miley had gone truly astray.
I don’t know anyone that bad, but i do know a guy that would call 911 and immediately take photos after.

That’s cold, Claude.
While all that may be true, that would negate the whole premise of the gag. Since it’s a comic strip where humor is key, why would you want to do that? Just let it go………..

crab-stuffed flounder
I rarely cook stuffed foods.
I have never practiced doing it enough; so I always flounder around and get crabby.
Tim Rickard’s ‘Brewster Rocket’ had a similar observation today
Kind of out of character for Claude, this mean streak.
At least, I like to think it is.
Of course, it wasn’t a friend, was it… just some guy hanging around the park.
Tsk tsk.
Sadly, this is the way of the world these days. Take the picture or video first, then maybe help. But, I have to say that the pictures and videos can be very important. It wouldn’t have hurt Claude to make a little call to 9-1-1, though.
Again: Use the spoiler tag!
Thank you.
Unnerved, not grumpy. I’ve even cancelled the thumbs down.

I don’t know if nighthawks’ posting is this one, but here is one that is a live, virtually heavy-metal version.
Okay … first things first. Thanks all for the well wishes on yesterday’s news.
