Tulsa’s Woodward Park features a number of “Alice” bronze sculptures. Spent many a happy hour there as a child. I’m due another nostalgia journey that way.
Your posted Woodstock video is indeed “”Wow.””.
I just found out, after all these years, my brain made me the victim of a mondegreen (still not in Word’s dictionary).
From the first time I heard “White Rabbit” ’til today, I have always heard “When the men on the chess board…” as “Wooden men on the chess board…” . 🐇
I did manage to find a video with the late Signe Toly Anderson on stage as lead singer of “Jefferson Airplane.”
This is as close as I can get to the original formatting (without an amount of work I’m unwilling to put in) in the copy of “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” I own of “You are old, Father William.” The John Tenniel illustrations are not coloured either, but I can’t find the ones credited as “colored by Fritz Kredel” in my Random House copy, and other colourists’ works just seem jarring to me.
To me it’s a toss-up between “Jabberwocky” and “Father William” as to which is my favourite Carroll poem.
YOU ARE OLD, FATHER WILLIAM by: Lewis Carroll
‘You are old, Father William’
Lewis Carrol
“You are old, Father William,” the young man said
“And your hair has become very white;
And yet you incessantly stand on your head—
Do you think, at your age, it is right?”
“In my youth,” Father William replied to his son,
“I feared it might injure the brain;
But, now that I’m perfectly sure I have none,
Why, I do it again and again.”
“You are old,” said the youth, “as I mentioned before.
And have grown most uncommonly fat;
Yet you turned a back-somersault in at the door—
Pray, what is the reason of that?”
“In my youth, said the sage, as he shook his grey locks,
“I kept all my limbs very supple
By the using this ointment—on shilling the box—
Allow me to sell you a couple?”
“You are old,” said the youth, “and your jaws are too weak
For anything tougher than suet;
Yet you finished the goose, with the bones and the beak–
Pray, how did you manage to do it?”
“In my youth,” said his father, “I took to the law,
And argued each case with my wife;
And the muscular strength, which it gave to my jaw
Has lasted the rest of my life.”
“You are old,” said the youth, “one would hardly suppose
That your eye was as steady as ever;
Yet you balanced an eel on the end of your nose–
What made you so awfully clever?”
“I have answered three questions, and that is enough.,”
“Father William” and “Walrus and the Carpenter” are both wonderful, But I am rather partial to “Jabberwocky”. I have it memorized as a performance piece. I do voices (tremulous old man for “Beware…”) and vary the tone from pastoral through quickening to the exciting battle.
(“Aerosmith’s 2001 song Sunshine uses the surrealist imagery in Carroll’s novels in their lyrics and music video, which is based in a Wonderland-esque world.”)
(“In the trippy 1967 Beatles hit I Am The Walrus, John Lennon used Lewis Carroll’s poem The Walrus and the Carpenter, from Through the Looking-Glass, as the basis for the title, and the mad-cap narrative for the apparently nonsense scenarios which pepper their song.”)

One of my very favorite posters… if not my favorite!
including the lovely young Mia Woofiscowa (I hope I spelled that right!) as Alice…
who, BTW, in Tim Burthound’s vision… and film… is a fairly grown-up 19-year-old, and not the schoolgirl of earlier versions.
Alice must go back to Wonderland to save the White Queen…
played by Anne Howlaway…
(who was then best known for another series of films where she played a young princess)…
…..from the machinations of the evil Red Queen…
unexpectedly played, against type, by his then mate, and mother of his pups, the sweet faced Helena Basset-Cur-Ter.
…
I see that Stel has, in fact, placed the Red Queen front and center….
Having, no doubt, some sympathy with a fellow(?) evil Queen.
Did I say evil? Oh… just…um… kidding, Stel…. I kid. You know….. I kid….
[human? version]
Beautiful cards… so pretty I might be distracted…
…
“Oh is it my turn?”
Or later….
“Wait… I can’t discard that one… “
I know, huh?

All anyone can ever say about Grace Slick at Woodstock…
and especially this song..
is “Wow.”
…
I wasn’t at Woodstock… but still in my teens, I saw Grace Slick in San Francisco with her previous band, Great Society.
I also saw Jefferson Airplane then, with Signe Anderson, several times, before she left… they used to do free concerts in Berkeley.
She had a powerful voice too… I was sad to see her go, and didn’t want to like the new line-up, when Grace joined them.
But who could deny that she made them even more of a powerhouse?
They changed West Coast rock.
…
And along with Janis Joplin, Grace helped change women’s roles in it, as well.
Anyone who doesn’t believe it, would only have to watch this one video.
I had to go looking…
It’s hard to find videos with Signe…
but here’s her last performance with Jefferson Airplane.

Thanks, but I didn’t post the Woodstock video… I was replying to StelBel.
The “White Rabbit” video, which, I’m suggesting that skeptics (and everybody) watch, is in her comment, not mine.
…
What I posted in my own comment IS a video of the Jefferson Airplane with Signe Anderson…
I said it was HARD to find them, but not that I didn’t.
I had come across only three, and chose the one I thought was the best example, though not great quality.
It was her last performance with them…. also containing photos from her much later reunion with Marty Balin.
…
The other two I found were one I actually liked better, in some ways, but it has terrible sound quality…
And the one you posted, which sounds better than either of those, and has a much more well-known song… “It’s No Secret”.
But it features mostly Marty Balin’s strong voice, so you can hardly hear Signe.
(In fact, I always thought he sounded a lot like Grace Slick, and they harmonised well after she joined the group.)
Thanks Stel. Great memories.

I’ll second that!
Me third!
I’ll be 4th.

Wow.. one of my favorites!
An AMAZING poster, indeed, Stel…
So beautiful!

I remember this well. I was a sophomore in High School. What a tragedy!
carrot cake
Easy on the icing. Better yet: skip it completely. And use less sugar than most recipes ask for in general.
It just doesn’t taste good if too sweet. That’s all.
My father would agree with you.
I, on the other hand, have a terrible sweet tooth.
You poor, poor thing. I hope it gets better soon.
(exits to the right)
Yes, “carrot bread” is much more to my liking.
The only cake that doesn’t have chocolate in it that I LOVE.

Good Morning Philm phans!
Y’all have a great day. (((((HuGz!)))))
Wow, Stel. Another movie I don’t have to sit in the Scaredy Cat row. Hooray!
I love the poster! Just beware lest Dogsknee studio sicks the hounds on you.
