Here’s a picture link to the whole human universe movie re-titled “The Maltese Falcon.”

I learned this existed last week. I meant to post it the next day, but I forgot.
The rest of the album is about what you’d expect, but his singing voice here is actually pretty good.
“VANDERBILT The rise and fall of an American Dynasty”
Anderson Cooper and Katherine Howe
ISBN 978-0-06-296461-8
The last sentence ( page XVI) of the introduction:
“This is the story of the greatest American fortune ever squandered.”
The last paragraph (page 12) of the prologue:
“The United States, a country founded on antiroyalist princi- ples, would, only twenty years after its revolutionary burst into existence, produce the progenitor of a family that would come to hold itself up as American royalty, with the titles and palaces to prove it. But their empire would last for less than a hundred years before collapsing under its own weight, destroying itself with its own pathology.”
The two quotes are then given solid substance throughout the book.
This LINK leads to the 23 minute and 33 second CBC radio interview with Anderson Cooper that sparked my interest in reading it. It took this long to go through the waiting list for 36 copies at the library. The interview is quite interesting in and of itself.
People, Fitzgerald wrote “The Great Gatsby;” the Vanderbilts, Astors, Strongs, and the rest of “the 400,” lived “The Great Gatsby,” although as living people most of them were far more likeable than Fitzgerald’s characters; even blinded by both societal rules and ambition, their humanity showed through.
What really kept my interest going throughout my reading though, were the bits of interconnected histories of people, neighbourhoods, and even buildings.
This is history from around 1670 (New Amsterdam was surrendered to the British in 1664) to modern day New York City.
As I said above, this is a really good, well written book, and if you read it, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.

The Maltese Basset must be returned to its rightful owner!
Again!
Just when you thought the current state of cultural affairs had robbed everyone of all redeeming social values, something like this happens to restore your faith in humanity.
I read about this. He was a young man, < 30, from Ireland, on a flight from Dublin to NYC. He was arrested upon landing in NY by the feds. Possible twenty years.
“The โFat Dogโ will show up, as a memorable villainโฆ
played by a famed (and fat) canine stage actor in his first screen role.
The simpering Joel Canine, if I remember his name rightโฆ”
I think you are referring to Kasper Gutdog, played by Muttley Greenstreet.
The actor playing Joel Canine was well-known and famous already: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000048/
Sift together
1 cup sifted flour
ยฝ teaspoon baking soda (not baking powder)
ยผ teaspoon salt Set aside for the moment
Put into large bowl:
ยฝ cup soft shortening (lard or Crisco vegetable)
ยฝ cup packed brown sugar (use the back of a serving spoon to pack level with the top of the measuring cup.
ยฝ cup (level) white sugar
1 egg, unbeaten
ยฝ cup smooth peanut butter
1 Tablespoon water or lemon juice
ยฝ teaspoon vanilla extract (real only or the taste will be off)
Beat the second list together at about 1/3 speed or use a pastry blender. Scrape down the side of the bowl as necessary using a spatula.
Blend well
Add the flour mixture and blend in (again scraping the bowl as necessary)
Drop by rounded tablespoonfuls onto lightly greased cookie sheets
Press lightly with a floured fork to flatten and ridge the cookies
Chill the raw cookies in the fridge for 15 minutes
Bake at 325ยฐ to 350ยฐ for 12 to 15 minutes
Notes from me:
The one cup sifted flour is sifted and measured. It is then resifted with the baking soda and salt. Over fill the measuring cup and scrape it level; do not pack it down.
Watch closely from the 10 minute mark as theyโll go from done to burnt in the blink of an eye.
Iโve always loved his operatic styles in his videos. RIP, he will be missed. And, Yeah, possibly was preventable, he did, after all have other health issues and what else can you say about the hard rock&roll lifestyle, so we may never know, but truly it is our loss…
From: Pickled Pete on today’s The Comic Strip That Has A Finale Every DayWhat Bravery is All About (no George Carlin, but the punchline is rough slang)
A British SAS squad and an American Marines squad are together in the middle of a city. The commanding officers of each group are discussing the merits of SAS vs Marines: these officers have reputations for being the strongest, toughest and most feared men in the whole of the armed forces. The American squad leader turns to the British officer and says, โMy Marines are so much braver than your SAS.โ
โI doubt that very much,โ says the SAS officer.
โThey are much braver,โ says the American. โWatch this.โ The American squad leader turns to one of his Marines and shouts, โSERGEANT!! Climb to the very top of that building and jump off.โ
โSIR, YES SIR,โ shouts the sergeant. The sergeant runs inside the building, runs to the top and without a secondโs thought, jumps off the top of the building and smashes into the ground. He survives, but is very badly injured and gets taken away on a stretcher.
The American leader turns to the SAS officer and says, โNow thatโs bravery.โ
โYeah? Well watch this,โ says the British officer. He turns to his men and bellows at the top of his voice, โYOU, PRIVATE, CLIMB TO THE TOP OF THAT BUILDING AND JUMP OFF.โ
The private looks at the officer and says, โSir, GO SCREW YOURSELF, Sir.โ
The Officer turns around to the American and says, โYou see? THATโS bravery!โ
Happy Birthday, Mr. Sherman. And many happy returns of the day.
Now that you’ve let the cat out of the bag, maybe next year you’ll have a Cleo and company party with cake, and refreshments, and adult beverages. Something to look forward to.
Watched that with a client recently. It’s still fantastic.

Even the human version is one of the best films ever.
Made years before I was born, and still absorbing more than 80 years after it was released.

…i’m old…
๐
I got this immediately. One thing is still around in the original packaging and that’s the Old Spice.
Unless the bottle in my bathroom has been there longer than I thought.
Lava soap is still around, but it’s green.
I still use Barbasol though the package has changed. I have a verrry old bottle of Old Spice like the one shown.
???
What exactly are you treating us to, nighthawks? I cant find the common theme.
as Happy alluded to, it’s just old stuff…in old packaging
You ‘got’ us…..
LOL
hey, if this is a link to an online pharmacy, don’t shop there…
the medications and toiletries look way out of date.
Where’s the blue bottle of Noxzema?
..
Looks like someone needs a hug.
I’ve seen a Basset mouth flutter. When he was running…
My internet is SO slow right now.
Trying to watch YouTube is useless.

I wonder if Putin is invading now.

I will love enjoying The Maltese Basset again. A definite favorite.
Wow! What a great movie! No need to sit in the Scaredy Cat row on this movie. Sam Basset is so handsome, I don’t want to miss a second!
Stel-Bel, we need the poster for this movie!
Not to worry, Dennis! There are two, which will be posted at some point during the series’ run.
Yay!!
Wow!
โThe Maltese Bassetโ !!
One of the best films ever madeโฆ. and one of my all-time favorites (an overlapping, but not necessarily identical, pair of lists) โฆ
and I almost slept through it!
I hope my ticket will let me stay through the second showing, so I can catch what I missedโฆ
…
What a story, indeedโฆ. I donโt want to give any spoilers, cos it says โto be continuedโ โฆ
But itโs one of the first films to be called โnoirโโฆ
The intrigue is thick enough to cut with a knife….
Every part, from leads to bit parts, of which there are few, is cast to perfection.
…
There is no other possible Sam Bassetโฆ or Miss Behaveโฆ for this filmโฆ.
(even though I knew another Miss Behave, IRL, but she wouldnโt be right for this film, cos sheโs a drag queenโฆ but I digress…)
The โFat Dogโ will show up, as a memorable villainโฆ
played by a famed (and fat) canine stage actor in his first screen role.
The simpering Joel Canine, if I remember his name rightโฆ
…
And then there’s that statuette… the Maltese Basset itselfโฆ. wow.
Nighthawks has done a beautiful job of capturing the filmโฆ
What dogetective, no matter how hard-boiled, wouldnโt fall for that face, in panel three?
Love that he calls her Brown Eyes… since almost all dogs have brown eyes.
He wants to investigate her, um… very privately…. from the first moment.
But there are mysteries to sniff outโฆ doggie romance is off the tableโฆ until … you know… some details are dug up.
….
The kibblecorn is popped, the wine is poured… or whatever you’re drinking…
The stage has been beautifully set for a mysteryโฆ let’s go.
Thanks, Nighthawks.

Yes… Greenstreet was a large dog, suitable for playing a character called the Fat Dog… but nonetheless quite suave.
As for the dog who played Joel Canine… Peter Furrey…
your link is to his human counterpart, Peter Lorre… who is featured in the clip Nighthawks posted in his first comment.
But both were already well known.
It’s virtually impossible to find anything about Furrey…
I know… It’s not fair that we can’t access BassetTube or read the New Basset Times…
not even Bassetpedia.
…
They can access our sites and publications…
but we can’t find a way to link to basset movie clips.

JANUARY 24, 2022 | NATIONAL COMPLIMENT DAY | NATIONAL PEANUT BUTTER DAY | BEER CAN APPRECIATION DAY
I should be in bed…
But I was just listening to this….
Love the song…
I actually don’t like the video, but a lot of people do.
…
Anyway, when Meat Loaf passed away, they said the cause was unknown… but it has since come to light that he died of Covid-19.
The family didn’t talk about it because they didn’t want his death used as an example for political purposes.
So all I’ll say here is… it’s sad.
…
He was against vaccination mandates… they won’t say whether or not he, personally was vaccinated…
but in an interview a while back, he said “If I die I die.”
…
You can draw your own conclusions; I’m not here to argue with anyone.
But what a shame…. and possibly preventable.
Iโve always loved his operatic styles in his videos. RIP, he will be missed. And, Yeah, possibly was preventable, he did, after all have other health issues and what else can you say about the hard rock&roll lifestyle, so we may never know, but truly it is our loss…
