Apparently 1968… and that was early for a cassette deck in your car.
The cars I knew well into the 70’s had 8-track players.
Carrying more than a few tapes required a lot of space: one friend had a wooden lemon crate, a bit smaller than an orange crate, riding on the floor behind the front seat of his van, and passengers were often made to get up and go get the next one.
…
In fact I thought maybe the “Musicassette” was a proprietary format, one of those things you’d be sorry you tied up your music in when the next form came along… but no, that’s the end of a standard cassette in the picture, despite the unusual insertion direction.
Of course, by now you’re sorry if all your music is stuck on any cassette.
Cleo in the early strips is much more reminiscent of the Cleo we saw the other day, costar of “The People’s Choice” on TV, with Jackie Cooper.
Sarcastic but silent, commenting voicelessly on what she saw as Clara and Claude’s failures and shortcomings.
Her only weapon was snark, long before she got her first bazooka.
…
Sometimes now I think Claude, and especially Clara, look or dress a bit too old for their ages, compared to the seniors I know today.
But looking back at the original Cliffords, I see that in 8 1/2 years, they’ve gotten about a decade younger… Clara is positively stylish compared to her 2014 self.
Cleo learned in just the first couple of years to walk upright, and speak aloud, tasks it apparently took humans millions of years to accomplish.

“SPAGHETTI ALL’AMATRICIANA” “Spaghetti with Bacon and Tomato Sauce”
3 tablespoons chopped onion
1/4 pound bacon, chopped
1/2 tablespoon olive oil
1 1/2 pounds Italian plum tomatoes, peeled and chopped
Salt
Pepper
1 pound spaghetti
1 cup grated Pecorino or Parmesan cheese
Sauté the onion and bacon in olive oil until they are golden. Add tomatoes, salt, and pepper, and cook over high heat for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, cook the spaghetti according to directions on package and drain well. Serve the sauce over the spaghetti and sprinkle with cheese. SERVES 4.
Notes from me:
Pecorino cheese is a hard, salty sheep milk cheese.
The serving sizes have got to be huge.

Love these Nighthawks. Always interesting to go back to the beginning. Especially liked the printer one ~ I know these frustrations. Claude, Clara and Cleo ~ love them all, then and now!!

Nice. Good to see the debut of Cleo, Clara, & Claude.
I am reminded of an old joke about a guy pulled over by the police for a sobriety check. The cop says to him: “Your eyes look bloodshot, sir. Have you been drinking?”
The guy answers: “Your eyes look glazed, officer. Have you been eating donuts?”
In the joke, the guy is telling this story from jail, pleading “I need bail money.”

if the old scalawag was still around he’d do this
Does the ol’ scalawag know how to tamper pictures?
Do you, ol’ scalawag, wherever you are?
And why aren’t you HERE?

It’s-too-early-in-the-year-yet-syndrome.
Better double-check your checks.
