This FTTD has been very interesting. This past Tuesday I had my second eye cataract surgery. To say my vision is different doesn’t even begin to describe it. Wearing my glasses now, old prescription that they are, just makes everything blurry.
I found seven, possibly eight differences. The remaining two or three will have to find themselves without any help from me.
My eyesight has always been bad. I’ve worn glasses full time since I was 7-8 years old, and I expect to need them still. The M.D. can’t write a new prescription for another month, to allow my eyes time to incorporate their new lenses and my brain to adjust to the additional data. Plus, I have double vision that has to be corrected with a prism on my right eye, independent of any vision deficiency. I have worn progressive lenses for decades so I can read. They tell me that I will definitely need a new prescription for sunglasses, perhaps still for progressive clear lenses. Right now, it feels like my vision changes throughout the day and is acted upon by any number of variables.
I’m in almost the same boat, except for the double vision.
My vision has always been very volatile .. even during one appointment it’s hard for an optometrist to get a reading.

I still remember the wonder I felt, when I realized that I could see blades of grass in the lawn and leaves in the trees… I’d always seen both as fuzzy green clouds.

I’ve worn progressive lenses since the late 1980s… But for about 20 years I’ve taken them off to read, because I’m so nearsighted I see better extremely close up without them.
I’m using my tablet right now, maybe 7″ from my eyes, without glasses.
My sister said getting cataract surgery made her eyesight perfect, except it took that near vision away from her… One reason I’ve put it off, the other being that no two optometrists agree on whether I need it.

I do have extreme astigmatism, and when optometrists measure it, they somehow get it wrong.
Several times I’ve had to take back new glasses that made me too nauseated to wear them, and insist that they redo them, using my previous astigmatism prescription with the new refraction.
That works.
The lenses they put in your eyes after cataract surgery replace your natural lens. They are activated by the same muscles. The need for reading glasses due to presbyopia is caused by loss of elasticity in your natural lens. The replacement lens has the needed elasticity. My sister had it done and could see distance and close better than ever.

One time in the 90s, I accidentally left my keys on the roof, at a busy Costco, right under a parking lot light. They positively glistened.
Relief barely outweighed my hurt feelings, when I came back 2 hours later, and nobody had stolen my car.

If you get cataract surgery you can request to keep your near sight vision, you have a choice.
The lenses they put in your eyes after cataract surgery replace your natural lens. They are activated by the same muscles. My sister and a friend were both given an either/or choice.
This was about 10 years ago for both.
They were told that there’s no more elasticity in the lenses, so if you choose near vision, you’ll need glasses for everything else.

My sister chose medium distance, like computers and cooking.
My friend got one close vision eye and one distance, which they said she’d get used to, but it drove her nuts till she had another surgery.
