Someone has to make a deal with the basset dimension to get the original films to this one.
I could only find the human version “Grand Hotel.” You’ll note, I’m sure, that the title is not “Grand Human Hotel” because unlike all bassets, not all humans are grand.

Wow, a new poster from StelBel! Love the lipstick (and purplie eye shadow, of course). But shouldn’t it be Grand Kennel? I know, kennels stir mixed emotions among our four legged masters.
The first two extras were a blast! I will have to watch the third tomorrow, as it is long and I am tired from a weekend of cooking up a BBQ event for my in-laws.
Brother in law, actually. My wife’s parents, as well as my own, have been gone for years. But we haven’t seen my BIL’s family since before COVID. He always enjoys my cooking because his wife makes him eat healthy food!

Beautiful, Stel!
A true classic from the glorious golden age of Hollywood, a time when they still thought it necessary to say “Hollywood California“, as if there could be another.

This is not so much a story as a chance for the studio to showcase all the talent and star power it could muster, from it’s own kennel of canine stars to any it could borrow…
in a series of intertwined small plots and vignettes designed to highlight their best features.

Garbone… her haughty beauty a cover for shyness… growls her most famous line, “I want to be alone”…
which most dogs and people still think she said in real life.

BTW, she had a heavy Swedish dog accent, which the director was hoping would sound Russian to the still rather unsophisticated 1930’s public.
Little did he know that the 2021 public probably still wouldn’t notice, accustomed as we are to basset actors playing any breed, nationality, or sometimes even gender they can pretend.

John Burybone showed off the famous profile … and acting chops… that he passed on to his pup and thus to his famous grandpuppy, “Doo” (Doodles) Burybone,…
whose current career started as a very young puppy actress in “BT, the Basset Terrestrial.”

There’s a lot more doggy drama, many stories, and much to say, if I had all night, after an opening in which Lewis Steakbone famously barks “”Dogs coming, dogs going. Nothing ever happens“”

A much better film, BTW, than its flashy human imitation… and much prettier poster.
Love the fonts, Stel… and at least on this poster, the pouty and still beautiful Joan Crawdog steals the show.
I posted this on “Ballard Street” two years ago for (her avatar is a link to a fun post about the moon landing),
but GoComics after having reinstated me (all my comments were visible the day before) immediately set me to invisible again; who knows why.
Life interfered, and commenting on comics dropped to a really low priority so I’ve not bothered trying to get reinstated again. I have been thinking about trying to but it’s still a low priority.
Anyway, ML, the point is if you didn’t catch it then, Susan was kind enough to mention my invisible post at that time, here it is again.

And just think, MMM’s rocket engine brought the astronauts back home to earth. I always thought he was pretty special, but Alexi’s article says he’s only one of 410,000 working on the Apollo program.
I understand. I thought about these two latest rocket rides and how much they cost for a couple of minutes in space. That much money could have done so much more good in a myriad of places. They could go to NASA and experience weightlessness if it’s that important.

Interesting poster. Much better than the human version. I absolutely love the names!! And, of course, the eye shadow makes the whole picture.
The Wild and Wonderful Thirties was fun and interesting.
Just curious ~ why is that ballerina smelling her shoe. I never took ballet, so I don’t know all the ins and outs of it. Is this something they all do? 🩰 🤪
We still have a little smoke every now and then. They were talking about thunderstorms last night and today, but nothing happened here. Breathe deep while you can.
Pointe shoes are very personal to a ballerina… specially made, hand shaped, well worn…
She’s actually kissing them, not sniffing them…. she kisses each shoe and lovingly rubs it against her cheek…
A sad scene but to modern eyes almost comically melodramatic.

It’s been years since I last saw it, but as I recall, she’s depressed… but when isn’t Garbone depressed?… a somewhat fading prima ballerina, whose lover has died….
I think he was an assassinated nobleman.

On top of that, she shows up for her big performance in Vienna, which they’ve told her is sold out.
I can’t remember whether she goes onstage or just peeks… and sees that the house is half empty.
She flees, back to her room in the hotel, and takes off her costume, determined to give up ballet….
in fact either then or a few minutes later, she’s proclaiming that it’s time to kill herself.
So in this image, while still mostly in costume, she’s kissing her beloved shoes goodbye, in a dramatic farewell to her life as a ballerina.
