Walking her cat…. London, 1931

It just occurred to me… Fur collared coat, new-looking, probably wool, with a brooch. Shiny Mary Janes, clean, crisp white socks.

By 1931, England had fallen deep into the Depression… She must be a well-to-do little girl. I wonder why she’s out in the street by herself (okay, except for the cat).

Because parents weren’t helicoptering then.

I grew up as a free range kid and allowed my kids in the ’80s, ’90s, and ’00s to be the same. My friends were horrified! Especially parents of my youngest.

While child molesters lurking in parks and playgrounds get the press, nowadays most of them hang out in places like Face Book. And parents let the kids have Smart phones without controls…

I think this one does need a small version to be clear..

Meanwhile, I couldn’t find the artist… all the sites were basically either stealing it to use for a puzzle or selling it on merchandise with no credit to the artist.

It’s not right and nobody stops it!

In your smaller version, the image certainly bears a passing resemblance to Ronald R…

A Northern bald ibis, in Turkey.

I think they wouldn’t look quite so weird if its bill weren’t the same color as its face. The fact that they match, and the little flecks of white and black, make it look like it’s wearing some sort of old, primitive clay mask.

The bald ibis population fell below 100 birds in Turkey during the 1970s, but is multiplying nowadays through conservation efforts.

This one was in a cage, when this photo was taken, at a protection station in Sanliurfa, waiting to be released at the start of breeding season.

I’m still waiting for those tires.

I had two blowouts last year… the only ones I’ve ever had, and I never want another one!

The first was from running over something apparently small and sharp getting off the freeway… I managed to keep my car in my lane till I was off and could pull over, but it was fighting me.

Some jerk drove past and shouted at me, as I was jockeying my way to the curb… “Hey, get off the road, &#$@! drunk!”

The second was on a very foggy night… I never saw anything in the street, but my tire suddenly and absolutely exploded. I drove home on the rim… Bad,.yeah .. but it was only a mile. Better than standing alone in the dark.

The next day I could see the tire… It was tattered all around like in a cartoon.
It was the same tire I’d been sold by my mechanic to replace the one that blew, and he and I both thought it was defective.

He didn’t exactly say so… but I could tell he didn’t want trouble, and he gave me a very good deal on the next one. I didn’t want to make trouble either, cos they take good care of me.

Just catch it with a glass.
A decent-sized one.
Of course, it has to be empty.

Tracking this down is hard, because there’s conflicting information…

But taking what seems to be the most trustworthy… This is Lionel Walter de Rothchild, of the famous, wealthy Rothchild family of bankers and eventually, peers and politicians, with his team of zebras, around 1875.

He had a great love of animals, though the ways animal lovers expressed that sentiment in the nineteenth century often amounted to what we call abuse in the 21st.

Case in point… driving a team of zebras. I read several sources… One said the team was a great success, and he used them for years…

I also saw pictures of him in a small, single-zebra carriage, and another picture of this team with 3 zebras and a horse, that may or may not have been used to calm the zebras.

Another article said the team was a failure, and he had to give up driving zebras, who couldn’t be tamed, and bolted with the carriage.

What does seem to be true is that he collected thousands of wild animals, and started a zoo, which he opened to the public, and it still stands today.

And what are those things with the flat, white perfect circles?

All right, already….

They probably mean…. (spoiler)…
The one near the bottom right corner… Second to last, third row from the bottom.

A big clue is that the lid of the compact is standing open. The shadow itself is a light rusty brown, not far different from the background color.

Yeah, many of both…

It makes sense. That posture requires the least energy expenditure and heat loss for a cold-blooded animal.

This is the great Sarah Bernhardt, as Phedre in Racine’s play, “Phaedra”…. printed on a cabinet card promoting her performance at the Comédie Française, in 1873.

Silver albumen photo by Felix Nadar, who took many pictures of Bernhardt and other famous people of the day… a new idea at that time., but one that Bernhardt adopted enthusiastically. She was said to be the most photographed woman of her time.

Nadar was himself very interesting… Among other things, an ardent balloonist, he took the first aerial photographs.

So we sat him right down in the middle of the house
And he never comes back no more

“Anticipation” was kind of ruined for me when Carly Simon allowed it to be used for a ketchup commercial…

It showed an extreme close-up of the neck of the bottle, tilted towards the camera, while we wait for the ketchup to slowly appear and then s.l.o..w..l…y start to come out… showcasing the thickness of the product.

I still picture Heinz ketchup when I hear it.
