And when an engine lets go and dumps all of its oil on the roadway, the trip back down will be a lot quicker for those who encounter it!

I couldn’t find much information, except for the fact that, as I’m sure one would expect, it was never built. Never started.

Nobody says why, except for the fact that it was totally ridiculous.

It was to be about half a mile high to the top of the beacon. The garage was going to be about 2/3 of the way up. But that means the spiralling road would still be several miles long.

One short article pointed out that there are 30 revolutions in the plan, and that drivers would be very dizzy by the time they made it up or down.

Also, I can only imagine the effect on the engine… I dunno about 1930s cars, but my 1970s station wagon needed a new radiator after a much shorter stint on a relentless climb.

Freyssinet, who designed it, was actually a well respected engineer, who designed many bridges and other structures…. Somehow he went a little…. well, maybe the wine was too good?

I was thinking a 1930’s car couldn’t make it even half way up before boiling over…

Oh no! He lost his ball down that hole!! What bad luck, and it was marked with a flag so he could avoid it too.

“Under The Influence” this week re-airs (summer hiatus) its look at      LIBRARY ADVERTISING CAMPAIGNS.      They are really fun (and lean toward funny too / take the time to listen, you won’t be disappointed / the Toronto library and two California libraries taunted each other during the Raptors championship year)..

That’s Buddy. With Kiki. Penelope rubs up against him like a sibling. Oversized sibling.

I installed one for my cats in a window to the porch. It fits on a portable 1/2 window screen. Doorman service rarely needed nowadays! Love it and cats immediately figured it out.

The Sun Voyager sculpture, Reykjavik.

The gleaming steel sculpture on Reykjavik’s splendid waterfront that resembles a Viking long-ship is the ‘Sólfarið’ or ‘The Sun Voyager’. Created by artist Jón Gunnar Arnason.

It is a common misunderstanding that Sun Voyager is a Viking ship. It is quite understandable that many tourists think this when travelling in Iceland, the land of the Sagas. Nonetheless, it should be stressed that this was not the original intention. It is a dream boat and an ode to the sun. It represents the promise of undiscovered territory and a dream of hope, progress and freedom.

In 1986, the district association funded a competition for an outdoor sculpture to celebrate Reykjavík‘s 200 year anniversary. The Sun Voyager was the winning piece.

Sólfarið is located on the seashore of Reykjavik close to the city centre, just a few minutes walking distance east of the Harpa Concert Hall.

Hard to believe that Harve Presnell was also, many years later, the despicable kidnap victim’s father in FARGO. Great and versatile performer.
