The text of the advertisement so your eyes don’t get strained.

Line and column breaks as accurate as possible.
You don’t have to be grown-up to think breakfast is a
pretty ghastly meal some mornings. Even five-year-old
young ladies need a bowlful of fruit-color, fruit-flavor
Trix to change their morning outlook from grim to gay,
When you’re five (give or take a few years either way),
you kind of fall in love with Trix and the way its bright
fruit colors wink up at you through the milk. You become

quite attached to the way that sparkly fruit-flavor keeps
demanding another spoonful, until pretty soon you’re
down to the bottom of the bowl. That’s why Trix were
born. To make good grain nourishment more fun.

MOM NOTE: How do you know what Trix can do, till you
pour some?

I think that’s the meaning of the “…applied psychology” line.
The advertisement is aimed at mothers, not their kids.
We are supposed to believe that giving the child Trix will change her grumpy mood to the happy life-is-beautiful mood of her mother.
Not that the mother has eaten Trix, she’s just being told in the “MOM NOTE” it can’t hurt to feed her daughter Trix and to see if it does improve her daughter’s mood.
To illustrate my point further, I’ve modified the advertisement’s text in the spoiler box below .

I think it brings up creepiness even better, but then, I’m egotisical.    😎

THIS is much, much better!
Had all the grandkids over yesterday. I know exactly how Calvin would be acting. The noise and activity level was at about an eleven on a scale of one to ten. Lots of fun, but I’m glad we can give them back.

Our youngest grandkids are flying up (with their parents, of course) on Tuesday. We stocked the freezer full of their favorites. Like Dinosaur chicken nuggets, hotdogs and PB&J. Monday we’ll get lots of fresh fruit.

And for us adults we have ribeye steaks, and I plan on making Alexi’s world famous Rum Ribs.

I forget how long ago you said you had run out of rum and made them without and they were, (and this is the important part) almost as good.
If you don’t want a full 26, I hope you at least buy a mickey.
Remember though, not spiced or they’ll be almost inedible.

Just what a kid needs to get through a hard morning… a bowlful of sugar, artificial flavorings, and artificial colors….

especially back in the 50’s, when the flavorings were even more crude, and before some colors were declared unsafe by the FDA.

Luckily, my mother refused to buy Trix.

We begged, and finally did get some sugary cereals, but as dessert, not breakfast.

Sugar Frosted Flakes, Sugar Crisp and Sugar Smacks.

Mmmm… health food.

I remember it was in the news a few years back when General Mills, trying to hop a trend, virtuously announced they were taking all artificial coloring out of their cereals.

It was rather more unannounced, when, after a couple of years of declining sales, they quietly slipped them back in.

Pale, supposedly all-natural 3-color Trix just couldn’t compete with the wild free-for-all artificial-color extravaganza they had previously become.

To which I say.. yuck.

I’m wide open to correction, but I believe that Huey Lewis appears clearly at the 3 Minute 28 Second mark.
Even if I’m wrong, it’s still a really good jam…comment image

Alexi, I just noticed that in the accompanying description on the video, they list Springsteen:

Roy Orbison performs “Oh, Pretty Woman” as the finale of the Black & White Night Concert. Backed by Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, James Burton, Glen D. Hardin, Tom Waits, kd lang, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, JD Souther, T Bone Burnett, Steven Soles, and Jennifer Warnes.

Of course, the resolution is poor and the black and white doesn’t help, plus we only get fleeting glimpses, so it’s easy to misidentify him.

The ELO video is great fun!

Hey, I never said HE was actually a jerk…

But he chose to sing a song about being a jerk… or maybe his management (which was basically his parents) chose it, and he just did what he was told.

However you look at it, the protagonist of the SONG is conceited and not very nice, bragging about breaking hearts all over the world.

There are plenty of songs that go the other way too.

Certainly both sexes are capable of jerkiness.

Present company excepted, of course.

Our former neighbors had a genormous (not fat, all muscles!) completely white (but not an albino) tomcat named Kasimir. He was pretty nice most of the time, but when he had enough of being caressed, he went nuclear.

Hah! At some point in the last hour my internet decided to come back… welcome home, internet!

I wish it wouldn’t decide to wait till I want to sleep.
Sigh…

Anyway, earlier tonight, I’d refresh, and the page would slooowly reach the point where the text was visible, but it just wouldn’t load any images…

I could tell which strip it was by what people were saying…. but I didn’t trust my memory of it well enough to comment.

..

The ever-so-spoiled Klaude… once made me wonder whether the neighbors were the Kliffords.

Klark and Kleo Klifford and their evil kitty, Klaude?

I suppose not.

Anyway… I stopped calling him that because nobody seemed to remember the name… he became the EWC.

But yes… I do believe this is the beginning of the saga…

the first little sharp pokes from the thorn in Cleo’s side… or make that a klaw.

I discovered this way of cooking corn on the cob on my own about 12 years ago.
Preheat the oven to 350° F., you don’t want the husks to be burned by the broiler element.
Put un-husked (no extra wrappings) corn on the second rack, top rack is first, and bake for 1 hour.
Remove from oven using tongs, or really good oven mitts, and let cool for about 20 minutes.
Husk them carefully, they’ll still be hot. The silk virtually falls off on its own.
Slather with butter, add salt and pepper to taste, and enjoy.

I soak mine in a pail of water for about an hour and put them on the grill. Turn 3 times x 5min. The husks will be singed, but the corn is cooked by the steam generated from the wet husks.

Shuck ’em, spin em through the stick of butter, salt and pepper – noms

Easiest corn ever…. especially if you’re only making one or a few ears. Microwave them in the husks.

Some people do no trimming at all… I just don’t like to put the dirty husks and long wilting silks in my microwave.

With trimming you can put it right on your plate and the husk will keep it warm for a while till you eat it.

….

Trimming sounds long in writing but actually takes seconds…

Check for worms, etc first of course…

Pull off any dirty or damaged leaves from the husk…

Cut off the stem fairly close to the bottom of the ear, right through the rest of the husk, and remove any leaves you cut.

Cut through the husk and silk about half an inch to an inch from the tip of the ear… if there is any internal damage,, you’ll have to cut more, taking off as much as necessary of the tip.

If there are tons of leaves left, remove some, if you like… But the husks give it more flavor. Try to keep the corn covered.

If you accidentally uncover some, find a clean leaf that you cut off and cover it. You can hold it on with string or plastic wrap… I have reusable silicone “rubber” bands for cooking…. Or just set it down on that side in the microwave on top of the leaf.

….

Microwave them just like that…

Right in the microwave tray or on a plate, uncovered…

It takes about 2 minutes an ear, less if you’re doing a pile of them, and doesn’t heat or dirty anything but the corn.

Unless it’s really old or tough, corn is cooked by the time it’s hot.

The silk peels right off cleanly with the remaining husk. No battles.

….

I don’t put ANYTHING on them… good corn needs nothing.

You can butter and salt them, if you prefer, when you peel them. Or rub them with Mexican chile seasoning, like Tajin, and or grated parmesan. It’s yours.

….

Yes, I think they taste better on the grill… But I’m not setting up a grill just to cook one or two ears of corn for a late dinner.

This way, to me, tastes better and is easier than using a pot of water, or even shucking before microwaving.

Watt’s your setting?

SusanSunshine

My current microwave is old and small.

I think it’s only about 700 watts, so I use high for almost everything…. And I have to admit to putting a very large ear back in for a minute.

I wrote the above thinking most people have at least 1000 to 1500w so I wouldn’t need to say it…

But I probably should have.

Almost any setting or wattage will do, though…

Just takes a little longer on lower power.

I always recommend experimentation cos microwaves differ so much even if labelled the same.

Just for comparison, for the timing, in case you also do any of these… I microwave LOTS of vegetables.

Frozen ones, NEVER for as long as it says on the package.

Or compare fresh asparagus, Brussels sprouts, and artichokes… all of which I trim well.

Usually only for myself… Larger quantities take a bit less time per serving.

Half a pound (before trimming) of asparagus, trimmed, covered on a plate or in a LOOSELY closed plastic bag… 2 minutes at most.

Half a pound of sprouts, uncovered, no water, takes 3 minutes in mine, to come out soft and very slightly chewy.

One medium artichoke, in a covered container or a plastic bag takes about 4 minutes…

The HUGE artichokes I’ve been getting lately take about 6 or 7 minutes apiece.

OTOH, green beans seem to differ every time… I have to stop and taste them. But since the variation is only a minute or two, it doesn’t disrupt dinner.

We have a long corn season here, thanks to California. At the beginning, I enjoy these kind of mild recipes, but as time goes on I start doing Mexican Street Corn and corn chowder to mix it up. I like grilling without husk, so I get some browning of the kernels. Ghee or mayo are good for getting a coating that gets between the kernels before grilling.

Probably too late to ask this; but, am I the only one who thinks Klaude looks more like a dog than a cat? The muzzle and tipped-over-ear just seems more doglike to me, not, that I’m a cat expert, having never owned one, or even gone near one if I could help it (I’m allergic).
