I was that close in a somewhat larger craft. It was a commercial whale-watching tour. We saw a mother with a young grey whale. The adult was just a bit larger than the tour boat. The whales seem to enjoy it. We had to stop quite a distance from the whales, but the whales came up to the boat, did some breaches and tail slaps. The mother came right at us, then ducked under the boat. It was really thrilling.
